There wasn’t a traditional information card; rather, there was a card with directions on how to use the tumbler that comes with the box (see below).
Teabook Double-Walled Glass Tea Tumbler – Value $24.99
This is BPA free (BPA is one of the few “chemicals” I actually try to avoid). It kept my tea warm for a very long time. And there is a filter top so you don’t swallow tea leaves. When you subscribe to Teabook, you’ll get one of these in your first package. But, they’re also available in the Teabook shop in case you want another. Mine came with a replacement o-ring for the cap. too.
Green Tip Mao Jian Tea from Changde (Hunan Province), 8 packets – Value $9.77
This is a green tea in the Chinese style. I regularly buy a similar product so I was happy to see this. I am not sure if this is the intended use, but I find if you brew this in the tumbler and make it really strong, it is a pretty good appetite suppressant…
Bai Hao Oolong Tea (Oriental Beauty) from Ningde (Fujian Province), 8 packets – Value $9.77
I used to think I wasn’t a fan of oolongs. It turns out I was brewing them too long (at least for my taste). So I actually made this in a different tea infuser, where you can remove the leaves after a bit. And it was just a very clean, warm flavor that I loved. This tea is a bit easier to take than the green tea, if you are not used to Chinese style teas.
Teabook Special Collection Mu Dan King Tea from Fuding (Fujian Province) – Value $2 (?)
Every month with Teabook, you’ll get a single bonus bag of a special collection tea. I don’t know much about this one because it’s not available on the Teabook site, but I did enjoy it. It was light and refreshing. (Without having much information, my best guess from a Google search is that this is a white tea, which I only discovered after the fact. So in retrospect, I probably could’ve made this in the Teabook tumbler.)
Here’s a picture of the green tea in the tumbler. It did get a bit darker than this (blame the lighting in my kitchen…).
Verdict: I calculated a value of $46.53 for the May Teabook. That is definitely good from a value perspective, although of course every month won’t have the tumbler. But I learned a few things this month (such as I had been using way too many tea leaves when making loose leaf tea in the past) and I appreciate the chance to try small batch and exclusive teas. I think this box is best for people who (1) drink a lot of hot tea and (2) enjoy straight up tea in the Chinese style (as opposed to or in addition to flavored teas from Stash, Tazo, Numi, etc.). Luckily, I am one of those people so this box was a great fit for me, personally.
What did you think of Teabook? Do you get any tea subscriptions?
