This month, Glassful sent samples of Garden Goddess Organic Sunscreen. I almost bought some of this at Target yesterday, so I’m pleased that I get to try it!
2011 Terra Bella Proprietary Red Blend- $40
Glassful allows subscribers to choose how many bottles of white and red wine they would like to receive in each box (all white, for example, or 2 whites and 1 red), but the actual bottles are always a surprise. I’m pretty openminded when it comes to wine, so I was excited to see what Glassful would pick for my first shipment!
The first bottle I received is a red blend from Sonoma County, California. It’s a Bordeaux blend, and the inaugural release of this wine (2007) received a whopping 95-point rating from Wine Enthusiast. The “Sommelier Notes” for this wine describe it as “showing bright cherry and cassis on the nose, with hints of violet, tobacco, leather, and dark chocolate.” While it’s fine to open up this wine now, Glassful’s sommelier recommends aging it for a few years. I rarely earmark bottles for aging, but I’m going to give it a shot with this one!
C'est Bon Reserve Chardonnay- $30
The next bottle in my shipment is from Oakville, located in California’s Napa Valley. Unfortunately, Chardonnay is one of the few wines that I often don’t like. I don’t mind a crisp, un-oaked Chardonnay, but oaky and buttery Chardonnays don’t appeal to me. According to the sommelier notes, this one has “subtle oak” flavor that “rounds out the wine and doesn’t dominate it.” It’s also described as having “rich notes of stone fruit, apple and rose petals on the nose with some… spice notes.” Still, I think I’m going to hold on to this bottle for when I have Chardonnay-loving friends over for dinner. It sounds like a great wine, but I’m afraid it will be lost on me.
2012 Jeff Hill Pinot Noir- $30
This is another Napa wine. (Glassful stocks wine from all over the world in their shop, so I think it’s just a fluke that all of the bottles I received this month are from Napa and Sonoma.) Pinot Noir is always a welcome sight in wine boxes (it’s one of my favorites!), and this one did not disappoint. It was very fruity (lots of berry and plum flavors) and had a solid earthiness that balanced out the fruit. I served it with homemade eggplant pizza, and it paired beautifully.
Verdict: This is my first box from Glassful, and I’m extremely impressed with the quality of the wines I received. The Pinot Noir was delicious, and I’m excited to age the Terra Bella Blend. (We’ll see if I can hold off opening it for a couple of years!) The only miss for me is the Chardonnay, but it also sounds like a solid wine. It might be nice if Glassful allowed you to customize your shipments (to ensure you don’t receive varietals you don’t enjoy), but I also really like that every box is a surprise. I suppose I’ll wait another shipment or two to see if oaked Chardonnay pops up regularly. If so, I can always try re-taking the quiz. I should also mention that the value of the bottles I received is extremely impressive. $100 of wine in a $54 box? Wow. I can’t wait to see what I receive in my next box!
