Each week, Doorstop Desserts offers a choice of two desserts, and subscribers can choose between them. For this box, they sent me Red Velvet Cake Truffles.
I received a recipe card with step-by-step instructions for constructing the dessert. And on a separate card, I found nutrition facts and a list of ingredients.
The first step was to smash the cake (saving some crumbs for toppings later) and mixing the icing into it. Last time they didn’t give me nearly enough icing to do this, and I was worried they skimped again, but it ended up being perfect.
There are two things I wanted to point out with this step. The recipe says to mix in the buttercream frosting, but I was sent “real cream cheese frosting.” It tasted great, but it seems like they either subbed the cream cheese for being out of the buttercream, or they updated what they thought tasted best and now send the cream cheese. I figured it out fine, but since this is supposed to be a kid’s box, I wouldn’t want any confusion of ambiguity for the directions.
The other thing is that the recipe said I should mix until it became a pasty texture. I mixed and mixed and it never got there, and honestly I’m glad because the texture ended up being perfect. These squished into balls well and didn’t fall apart, and I think if you ended up with a pasty texture it may have been too pasty/soft, you know?
Next, you squish the mixture into balls and freeze for 10 minutes while you melt the donut icing. Here are my truffles before freezing. Unlike last time, these stayed together great and shaped easily because I had a better amount of frosting to mix in.
The last steps involve dipping the frozen cake balls into the donut icing and topping with crumbs set aside from the first step. These are cute, and they were terribly delicious! Seriously, these did not last long.
The Verdict: Ultimately, I’m happy with this Doorstep Desserts! There are definitely a couple things to address, though. Firstly, this is basically the exact same thing they sent me last time, which was cake pops, except this time I didn’t skewer them (as this was a review box, I didn’t pick which dessert they sent). That being said, they definitely corrected the main issue I had with the cake quality and frosting issue for this box. The cake was moist and seemed fresh and stuck together well and I also had enough frosting to make the texture right for the truffle balls. Last time, the cake was dry and I had a hilariously lacking portion of frosting to try and make the cake pops/balls. I’d love to try something different from them.
Another thing is that the recipe card needs updated for the different frosting they sent, which was “Real cream cheese frosting” instead of the “buttercream frosting” that was listed on the instructions, and it said I should reach a “pasty” texture after mixing it into the cake but I didn’t, and it was perfect.
As far as value goes, you can definitely end up with more product by spending $15-$20 at the grocery store for your own ingredients, but you have to keep in mind that this box’s goal is to simplify making a treat with kids. The “value” may not seem to be great compared to what you can do with your own store-bought ingredients but that’s because you’re paying a little extra for the convenience of having everything pre-baked, pre-portioned, and easily designed for kids already, etc.
Overall, I’m happy with the way the dessert turned out, and definitely happy with how tasty the cake truffles were.
Long story short, I see a lot of good things and ideas, some areas for improvement, and hope to see more and try other kits!
