Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs.  Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size.  Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds).  This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 84 pounds).

Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Here’s a first look inside.

And here’s Monkey, “helping” me open the box.  He is seriously right there for EVERY box I open.  It could be K-beauty, vegan snacks, or fitness gear – he doesn’t care.

Included was an information card detailing the items for the month.  Suggestion to the folks at Surprise My Pet: don’t print black text on a red background – it’s practically unreadable in a dark living room…

Jeffers Inc. Share the Love Slice O’ Pizza Dog Toy – Value $7.95

I knew Nyx would love this.  She found a squeaker even I hadn’t been able to find (she’s very good at that).

Elvis Presley Dog Collection Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich – Value $13.29

I think this is actual officially licensed merchandise but may have been discontinued.  I’m unsure whether I want to give it to Nyx whole or treat it as two toys (she only gets one toy per day so she hasn’t had this yet – we’ve had a lot of dog boxes come in lately).

This toy made me laugh.  Inside the sandwich part are some velcro bananas.

Bark Bars in Peanut Butter and Carob Chip (1.5 oz) – Value $2.50

I like the packaging here and the item is great for the movie night theme.  (Actually most of the items fit the theme really well this month.)  Sadly these have wheat and rye in them, so Nyx can’t have them.  Luckily there are a lot of large dogs in my extended family who would love to have this.  I think you could also break it up into pieces for a smaller dog to enjoy.

Yaky Charms (0.75 oz) – Value $2.19

I love the packaging on these – just like microwave popcorn.  We’ve gotten them before.  You pop them like popcorn in the microwave, let cool, and give to your dog to enjoy.

Pawtree Paw Treats with Chicken, Apples, and Spinach (2 treats) – Value $1 (?)

This was a bonus, I guess, since it wasn’t listed on the information card.  These are made in the USA and are free of wheat, corn, soy, artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, and poultry by-products.

Puppy Scoops Vanilla (6 oz) – Value $6.99

This is another fun idea.  You pour hot water in, stir, and freeze, and you end up with something a lot like ice cream but that is safe to give to your dog.  (This is lactose free although it does contain dairy (whey) and soy.  Last time we received this, I gave it to my mom and her dogs went nuts over it so that is probably what I will do again.

Pet House Candle in Mango Peach – Value $3.49

This is a super fruity fragrance.  Anyway, these are made from soy wax and are free of paraffin, petroleum byproducts, etc.  They contain odor neutralizer, which is nice.  Sometimes I want to burn a candle near Nyx’s pen because she does get a little stinky (medication side effect).  And now I have one that is safe to use in her area.

There was also a card with more information about one of the products in this month’s box.

Nyx with the pizza toy.

I know she is thinking “please don’t take it away” but she already had a hole in it at this point.  (She is missing fur on her front legs because she had to have a colonoscopy and upper GI scope under anesthesia last year and that is where they put in the IV.  But she is on prednisone so her hair is growing back very, very slowly.)

Verdict: I calculated a value of $37.41 for the April 2016 Surprise My Pet dog subscription box.  That’s a pretty good value for a $25 dog subscription, plus the toys were big enough for Nyx and the pet-safe candle company was a great discovery.  And everything fit the movie night theme very well!

Just wanted to tell you, while I don’t have a dog anymore, I still always read your reviews just because I love looking at the pictures of Nyx. I do have cats but don’t get any boxes for them ( they barely play with toys and they don’t eat treats that much) but I still read your reviews on the cat ones too, just to see the cute pictures. Thanks

Cute pics and great review Ragan!
I’m always amazed at how some dog boxes are able to do themes and stick so closely to them – I would have never imagined there were so many movie-ish themed toys (same for the baseball box that I think Buckles got).
I might have to get that dog I’ve cream stuff for my mom’s dog to try

Oberon thinks Nyx is a very lucky dog to get all these boxes. He only gets Bark box.

Ragan

Did you name him after the dog in the Iron Druid books or is it just coincidence that your dog’s name is Oberon?

Anyway, yes, it is funny to say Nyx gets to destroy one new dog toy per day but it wouldn’t be possible without all these dog boxes we review.
