ZEN BOX wants to help you “build your collection, have fun & be well!”  Their website states that essential oils can aid help with anxiety, restlessness, pain relief, headaches, immune system, focus and vitality and that “almost all essential oils anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and antibacterial.”  I might normally cite online material here to address these claims but since Kathy Hershelow, the founder of Sublime Beauty Naturals and ZEN BOX, just published a book on essential oils, I’m going to defer to her.  Also there is information on their blog site.

My box came with three essential oils and a bar of natural soap.  ZEN BOX ships an extra item every quarter (January, April, July and October) so the soap was the extra this month.  The only written material included in the box was a business card which is great!  I’d rather read my information on line and print it out, if needed.  Reduce, reuse and recycle, right?  As far as I can tell there is no particular theme to these boxes.  ZEN BOX started in February so there were two boxes before this.

Typically I wouldn’t show you two photos of a business card but I had to since there is a real live phone number (which I find rare for subscription boxes.)  Plus, I’ve emailed ZEN BOX several times for information and received a response within the day – typically within hours.  So far, my customer services experience has been superb!

The information on each product and how to use it was sent in an email as a link to a PDF document.  You can see the document by clicking on this link – it is 7 pages long! I found the information extremely informative and was happy to discover new ways to use my essential oils.

Zen Air Bliss $25.00 (on sale for $17.99)

As I write this, Zen Air Bliss is in my diffuser and flowing through the air.  The ZEN BOX information says blend is made from:

  • Ylang Ylang  Encourages euphoria, relaxation and pleasure. Excellent to combat depression or negative feelings. Can help reduce high blood pressure.
  • Sweet orange  Unblocks energy, combats pessimism and is bright and uplifting.
  • Bergamot  Restorative, helps reduce anxiety or worries, and is uplifting.
  • Magnolia  Considered a sacred flower, revered in India for its relaxing and emotional confidence qualities.
  • Neroli  Neroli is known to sooth nerves, facilitates creativity and calms the heart.

The smell is strong which may be because these oils are fresher than those I use currently or because I put too many drops in the diffuser.  The dropper on my bottle went very fast!  I had to move the diffuser from my office to the hallway.  This is a great daytime, pick me up scent.  The citrus smells (sweet orange, bergamot and neroli) were dominant but I was also able to identify the softer floral smells of ylang ylang and magnolia.

Zen Clove Bud – $21.00 (on sale for $15.99)

This essential oil can be inhaled, diffused or used topically.  Generally, essential oils should not be digested.  The ZEN BOX information says clove bud can be used as/for the following:

  • Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal
  • Anti-inflammatory and analgesic
  • Immune system support
  • Fungi and yeast
  • Oral health and pain
  • Promote a feeling of warmth

Zen Bergamot – $20.00 (on sale for $15.99)

I was so excited to use this!  I love the smell of Earl Grey tea which is tea flavored with bergamot.  Bergamot has a citrus smell but I like it better than many citrus oils because it is softer and not as overpowering.  The ZEN BOX literature says bergamot can be used for:

  • Analgesic (reducing or eliminating pain)
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antibacterial
  • Anti-fungal
  • Abdominal cramps and digestive discomfort
  • Antidepressant

Fresh Lemon Cinnamon Soap – Value $6.50

I love shea butter soaps since I have pretty dry skin.  Plus the lemon cinnamon combination smells so nice!  This was a nice addition to the box for me and I like the suggestion of cutting the bar in half when you set it out.

Verdict:  If you can’t tell already I loved my first ZEN BOX.  It’s not just the products I received or the value but it is the great customer service and the amount I’ve learned about essential oils already. As pediatricians have been moving away from antibiotics, I’ve been looking for other antibacterial treatments for my family.  When my daughter had an ear infection last winter we used a mixture of olive oil, tea tree oil and garlic to treat the infection and it really seemed to work.  Plus, I like to make our cleaning products (so simple!) and a salt scrub for when I’m in the shower.  Essential oils have so many uses beyond the diffuser.  In my house, the ZEN BOX oils will be well used.

It’s important to buy essential oils from a reputable supplier since they are not regulated.  You may find cheaper oils but many inexpensive oils are cut with other oils and are not be pure.  ZEN BOX says their oils are 100% pure therapeutic quality and are gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) tested, which is the way essential oils are tested for purity.  The tests are conducted by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), a multinational company providing inspection, verification, testing and certification services.  I requested to see one of the GC/MS reports and they sent it to me the same day.  I’m certainly no expert but at this point I feel comfortable purchasing oils from ZEN BOX.

And the value?  Well, the box costs $39 (without a promotion or coupon) and ZEN BOX promises a value of $59.99 which seems fair to me.  The full price value of just the oils is $66 and the current sale price value of the oils is $49.97 and that doesn’t count the cost of the soap.  The soap is sold in bars of two but if I divide the current sale price and add it to the sale price of the oils right now, the value is $56.47 if you purchased everything on sale.  I’m very happy with the value!

I was confused about something (placing an order far beyond bedtime lol) & sent an email that became a short novel…never expecting to receive a response.
The next day there was the most personal, kind & informative email from Kathy Heshelow, the founder of Zen Box & author of ‘Essential Oils Have Super Powers’! I couldn’t believe she took the time to read my lengthy email…Kathy put my mind at ease, answered all of my concerns with such kindness, compassion & a commitment to helping others! She’s truly a blessing & I’m so excited to receive my 1st Zen Box this month!!!!
I encourage everyone with an ailment (migraines, allergies, GI problems, chronic pain, etc) to learn more about Kathy & essential oils!

This is a very niche market. A market that likes aromatherapy oils and does not want to go and purchase them at a retail store. I like oils, I like soap. Yet this box is not for me. If they expanded their idea a bit and made the box zen and earthy I might like it better. I can not see myself subbing to a box that sends out surprise oils. Plus I might not like the surprise scents. I wish them best wishes in their box journey, yet this box reminds me of the many that have such a fine niche in the market who have not succeeded past 6 months.
