gymbag-march-2016-carda2

This month they included a standard information card with a list of items and a discussion of the month’s theme – energy!

gymbag-march-2016-cardb2

Again this month we got a card with an inspirational quote and a suggested playlist for workouts.  Is it bad I have never heard of any of these songs or artists?  My favorite bands are Rancid and Social Distortion and I haven’t even bought music since 2014, though…

Evlution Nutrition BCAA Energy Fruit Punch (1.72 oz x 2) – Value $8.75

In terms of the energy products in the box, this is probably my favorite.  But I can only use it on the weekends due to the amount of caffeine.  I work out later in the day and caffeine tends to keep me up.  However, I did get a boost from using this in my water during a workout.

5 Hour Energy Berry Flavor (1.93 fl oz) – Value $2.42

I don’t think I have ever tried this before.  I am saving it for a sleepy afternoon at work to see if it will give me a boost.

Cellucor C4 On the Go Preworkout Supplement in Icy Blue Razz (10 fl oz) – Value $2.50

Blue raspberry has never been my favorite flavor because anything that color reminds me of Windex.  Anyway, this month’s items clearly have a theme, because almost all of them have BCAA (branched chain amino acids, or leucine, isoleucine, and valine), B vitamins, and caffeine.  Although it might be considered a bit of overkill, I actually kind of appreciate the chance to try a bunch of different ways to get the same compounds in a supplement so I can pick my favorite.

Evlution Nutrition BCAA Energy Blue Raz (6.3 oz) – Value $28.99

This is similar to the fruit punch product above, just a different flavor.  It is nice getting full-sized containers of such things in subscription boxes – supplements can be expensive.

GymBag Sticker (Promotional Item)

This is hard to see in the photo but it is the GymBag logo.

Tasty Energy Charged Chocolate (1 oz) – Value $2.08

This is a clever way to supplement.  It tasted all right although I think I prefer a calorie-free way to get the same components (I am counting calories this year).

Gatorade Prime Energy Chews in Green Apple (1 oz) – Value $0.95

As far as I can tell, this is vegetarian, which is great.  I have not tried it yet because it is really high in sugar and I am trying to cut down on sugar lately.  (This is basically candy with some added nutrients…)

gymbag-march-2016-fitbook

Fitbook (Six Pack Fitness Edition) – Value $22.95

This is supposed to be a special edition Fitbook but it looks the same inside as the other Fitbook I used to have.  It comes along at a good time – I am doing more strength training and need a convenient way to keep track of it and this should make me more organized.

Viter Energy Wintergreen Flavor (0.63 oz) – Value $4.44

Yet another way to get caffeine, B vitamins, etc.  They don’t taste too vitamin-y, and they’re calorie-free, so that’s nice.

FYI, since I used this term a lot in the review, branched chain amino acids are supposed to help prevent muscle loss as you are losing fat (among other benefits).  I am trying to lose weight right now and of the weight I have lost, about 90% was fat and 10% was muscle but I’d like to retain more muscle (and eventually get to a recomposition stage where I try to stay the same weight but lose fat and build muscle).

BCAAs may not be necessary for supplementation in high-protein diets, but I am a vegetarian and I don’t like a lot of high-protein foods, so they may be more important for me.  The other thing is, I had some delayed onset muscle soreness from a strength-training session and I swear, a BCAA supplement made that go right away (well, I woke up the next morning feeling great anyway).

Caffeine’s effects are probably obvious in terms of energy, and B vitamins are involved in several energy-generating metabolic processes.  (It is also hard to overdose on B vitamins because they are water soluble, so you usually just excrete the extras in your urine if you take a lot.)  Just figured I would mention that stuff since it applies to almost every item in the box.

Verdict:  I calculated a value of about $73 for March’s GymBag.   That’s a bit lower than what the information card said, but I think the Evlution Nutrition BCAA products pretty much never sell for the MSRP, which seems to be the major source of discrepancy.  At any rate, this is so much better than the February box both in terms of value and being useful for both men and women.

That being said, this does cater to a specific sort of audience.  It seems mostly suited for people heavily into strength training.  I am getting there although I will never be a bodybuilder (that’s not really my goal).  But the products this month will definitely help me work on some of my fitness goals, and that’s a good thing.

Very helpful review. All of your fitness box reviews are. I lift and am a subscription box addict. I have been looking at all the fitness box reviews trying to pick the best one for my goals. Your reviews are making it easier.

Thanks! I am new to lifting (if you don’t count P90X, which I have done a few times). So I am learning this as I go.

Very helpful review. I see BCAAs mentioned everywhere but this is the first time I was able to understand what it meant.

Box seems monotone though. For that kind of money, it would be nice if supplants varied for different needs. I don’t need caffeine boost with every work out nor do I need any more sugary treats in my life.
