This was my second Package from Portland. This package's theme was "It's time to go outside, Portland-style!" The info card says: "The Spring 2016 package has been designed with the outdoors in mind. Whether you are at home, camping, or hiking, enjoy this meal composed exclusively of Portland artisanal goods."
As soon as I picked up my box, I heard little things moving around inside - it sounded wrong. I was right - something had broken open and spread all throughout the box. So the little spots on all of the packaging and information cards are spots and pieces of the trail mix!
PDX by Bike Zine - $5.00
This is a short guide to discovering Portland by bicycle. I flipped through it a bit, and can see the benefit of it to someone who wants to visit Portland, and intends to use a bicycle to get around. I am not coordinated enough to bicycle, so this will find another forever home.
Hungry Hikers - Murray's Hurried Curry - $11.00
I made this for dinner tonight, and intended to eat it with my husband, until I notice the large dehydrated chunks of chicken! So for you meat lovers, this would be an easy meal on the trail or while camping. I did try some of the couscous so I could give a knowledgable opinion - the flavour is good, if you like curry!
Olympia Provisions - Kleine Schweine Pepperettes - $5.00
This is the appetizer portion of the meal on the go! As a vegetarian, I don't eat sausages, so I gave these to a few friends to try! Their verdict was that it was less greasy than a Slim Jim, and had a nice texture.
Conundrum Trail Mix - $8.00
This is what came open in my box, which is a bummer because what was left was delicious! This is choc full of nuts, fruits, and seeds, and would be a great trail mix for when you need a quick snack.
Nineteen27 S'mores - Vanilla S'mores Kit - $14.97
This kit comes with enough supplies to make four s'mores. The marshmallows are square, and about an inch thick, the graham crackers are more like a thicker cookie (which is awesome - they're sturdy enough to hold their shape while eating!), and the chocolate is more dark chocolate than milk. This made really good s'mores!
UPDATE: Package from Portland reached out to let us know the Conundrum Trail Mix sent to subscribers arrived in tact!
Verdict: I really like the idea of this box. I think people who love the Portland area, or who've moved away would really enjoy this subscription. This is only my second shipment, and the value of this one is about $43.97 - which is a little low compared to the price. I did enjoy what I could eat out of this box, but it was more of a miss for me because of the meat products and the broken trail mix. Like I said, I really like the idea of this box, and they stick to their themes well! I am looking forward to seeing what the next few shipments bring - hopefully they come up a bit in value!
