Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs. Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size. Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds). This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 84 pounds).
Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Included was an information card detailing the items for the month.
Magnetic Dog Poetry – Value $6.78
One side of my refrigerator is covered in pet pictures so I will squeeze this in there. Seems appropriate!
Zuke’s Z-Bones Natural Edible Dental Chew – Value $1.75
This is grain free (awesome) but says it is for dogs 20-60 pounds (not so good, at least for Nyx). This is supposed to freshen breath and clean teeth and it also has cherries and cranberries (so lots of antioxidants).
Shorty’s Gourmet Treats – Value $2.25
These were mostly intact although there was some crumbling. These include ingredients like pumpkin, peanut butter, and sweet potato. Shorty’s is an Etsy shop that sells vegetarian dog treats. These have wheat flour in them so Nyx can’t have them, but you should definitely check out the Etsy shop. There are a lot of cute Valentine’s Day themed items in there right now. (The value is an estimate based on similar things in the shop.)
Duke’s Figure 8 Rope Toy – Value $2.20
Nyx loves tug toys and tennis balls so this was a hit. A teensy bit small for a dog her size, but we were definitely able to work with it. The price is so low because I could only find these online in megapacks. Buying one individually from somewhere at retail would certainly be more.
GOGO Dog Bow Ties – Value $0.53
This is a cute idea and probably works for most dogs (the length is adjustable). However, Rottie necks are THICK (Nyx’s collar is almost two feet long) and this was too small. Sized items can work for smaller dogs but there is too much variation with larger dogs. This is another item I found in bulk on Amazon, hence the price.
Grriggles Sizzle Shark – Value $3.59
This was probably Nyx’s favorite thing from the box (only because I haven’t given her the next item yet). Of course she immediately went to work trying to rip the stuffing out…
Ranch Rewards Smoked Bones – Value $11.75
As a vegetarian for 22+ years, this thing kind of grosses me out. But it seems perfect for dogs. I think I am going to do a trial run with Nyx. I am assuming this is from a cow and she has done OK with beef in the past. The only trick will be getting it away from her so she doesn’t eat it all at once…
Nyx getting ready to pull the stuffing out of the shark toy.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $28.85 for the January 2016 Surprise My Pet dog subscription box. That is slightly more than the cost of the box on month-to-month terms and even better if you buy a longer term subscription and/or use a coupon code. Although not every item worked for Nyx, there were a lot of items in the box. I noticed that many of these products seemed to be only available on Amazon or eBay or other “buy in bulk” kinds of places, so the value may be a little higher if you look at what the items would sell for individually. I had heard of some of the brands before, but all the items were new to me, which was nice.
What do you think of the January 2016 Surprise My Pet box? Do you subscribe to any dog boxes?
