Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - box

Escape Monthly
3 overall rating
36 Ratings | 10 Reviews

Escape Monthly is a monthly “vacation in a box” subscription.  Each box comes with food, beauty items, and other souvenirs from a new destination.  There are three versions – the regular box (what I’m reviewing here), a mini version, and a luxe version.  In the regular subscription, you get a tour guide book, which may be of use in planning your next vacation!

This box was sent to us for review purposes.  (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - brochure2

The box came with a full-color trifold brochure detailing the items included.  It also had some information about the destination – Arizona.  And it reminded me of a real travel brochure.

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - book

Moon Tucson Guide – Value $14.02

The listed price is for a new copy on Amazon.  One Amazon review said this book should appeal to the “double income no kids set,” which definitely applies to me.  Though both of my mom’s sisters spend at least half the year at homes outside Tucson so I probably don’t need a guidebook (or hotel room, for that matter) if I visit there!

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - beauty

Blue Mesh Shower Puff – Value $1?

Arizona Sun Bath and Shower Gel (4 oz) – Value $8.60

I haven’t tried this yet because I am getting over a rash caused by a different shower gel (not from a subscription box).  I like getting a beauty item or two in this box, as long as the whole box is not a beauty box, and this does smell good.  I’m looking forward to using it soon.  The Arizona Sun company uses natural plant-based (including cactus-derived) ingredients in their skincare products, which are never tested on animals.

Arizona Sun Lip Kist Lip Balm – Value $3.50

This is SPF 15 and I know I should be better about using SPF lip balms even in winter.  The Coola one I got from Birchbox did not work for me, but maybe this one will?

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - food

Phizz (10 tablets) – Value $7.50

This appears to only be available in the UK.  These are electrolyte tablets for your water and would certainly be useful when hiking in Arizona although they seem more of a summer item for me.  I’ll probably end up using them during workouts.

Cowgirl Chocolate Mild Dark Chocolate Bar (4 oz) – Value $2.50

Guess what the first item gone from this box was?  I just wrote a Love with Food review and I realized how much of a chocolate fiend I am.  (Cowgirl Chocolate is actually an Idaho company, but this was a fun bonus.)

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - jewelry

Handcrafted Turquoise Necklace – Value $20?

Handcrafted Turquoise Bracelet – Value $10?

These values are total guesses.  (These were non-branded items so I had no way to look them up.  You just try Googling “turquoise necklace” sometime!)  Turquoise is the state gemstone of Arizona and you will see a lot of it in the Southwest, so this is a good fit for the box.

Escape Monthly Subscription Box Review November 2015 - mug

Route 66 Travel Mug – Value $15?

This is another guess for a value, based on similar items I found online.  Route 66 runs through Arizona.  My fiance was looking for a travel mug so I have let him have this one.  (Anything to get him interested in subscription boxes, right?)

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $82 for the November Escape Monthly box.  Granted, at least three of the values were total guesses.  But even if I’m off by a bit, that’s over the cost of the box, and there are often coupons and deals available for this subscription.  There was a good mix of items this month from a variety of different categories.

Rossy

Native resident, here!

The prices you listed are what you’d be charged at a high-markup boutique. If you get away from that and say, go to a farmer’s market or drug store, here are the actual retail prices for these items:

Guide: $3
Shower Puff: $1
Lip Balm: $2
Phizz: $5
Chocolate Bar: $2
Turqouise Necklace: $6
Turquoise Bracelet: $4
Travel Mug: $10
————————————-
Actual Value: $33

None of these items are high quality. They are really touting this ArizonaSun brand for the state, but I’ve never heard of it and can’t recall ever seeing it anywhere. All of these items are made to look fancy and I feel confident that all of them are cheap crap. The turquoise jewelry is a prime example, but really, the leather string is the most expensive part (by far) of those jewelry pieces.

The box you got was a supreme disappointment for you money and I feel confident you’d have spent your money much better surfing the dollar section on Etsy.

Thanks for taking one for the team and reviewing this box!

This box has been and always will be a huge disappointment. When I quit them many months ago (and they DO NOT make it easy) I hoped I was in a bad phase and they would get better. They never have. Random flea market crap.

I want to like this box. I really do. I am just disappointed that they consistently feature places I have lived or visit frequently. Do something unexpected. Pick the Maldives as an escape location. Pick Iceland. Pick Mongolia. All of them have fascinating cultures and unique products/exports. Pick anywhere other than the US, Mexico, or “traditional” European locations like Paris. Be a real escape. Get us off the beaten trail with your location and featured items!

last month they included loofa sponge, this month… a shower puff! i seriously do not understand this subscription at all. What’s up with all these non-branded items?!

I think I just got hit in the head by a dumbbell. Nothing but the guide suggests Arizona to me. Blue poof? Seriously? Did that just happen? Just because the name has Arizona in it doesn’t mean it’s right for the theme. I am always baffled by these reviews from Escape monthly. It is as if they have never been to half of the places they try to ‘escape’ us to.

Although it’s not what you got I love Arizona Sun brand aloe for sunburns. It smells nice and is gentler on your skin than other brands like Banana Boat.

I really love the idea of this box, but the execution of it is never as wonderful as its name would suggest 🙁

I agree. All of these items are totally uninteresting. There’s no wow at all.
