Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - BOX
Wantable is a monthly subscription service that has 3 different plans: Makeup, Accessories, and Intimates. (Plus a styling service for Fitness clothing similar to Stitch Fix in the try-then-buy model) It’s one of the pricier subscriptions ($40 a month), but everything they send is full size, and they fully customize the boxes based on your preferences. You also can return individual items from any box for a refund.

Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - info 1

Here is my invoice. In addition to the retail price of the item, they also include “your price,” which is how much you would get refunded if you wanted to return that item. (Wantable recently introduced individual item returns to their subscriptions. Previously, it was keep the entire box or send the entire box back for a refund).

Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - info 2

You get to take a very detailed survey of what items you love, like and dislike. You won’t receive anything in your dislike list. Here’s how my personal preferences are set up.

Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - items 1

‘Tini Beauty Eye Cordial in Dirty Martini – value: $18 (My Price: $8.57)

This ‘Tini Beauty Eye product is like a cream eyeshadow that you apply with a doefoot applicator (I used that to get a rough application and blended with my fingers). It’s a shade I’d never pick up for myself – I tend to stay away from greens. However I really like how this looks on my skin so maybe I’ll try out more in this color family! (Swatch below)

OFRA Eyeliner Brown – value: $13 (My Price: $6.19)

I’ve never really been impressed with the OFRA brand before. This eyeliner is okay. It works. I felt like it was really dry and hard, though, and I prefer my eyeliners to be more creamy.

Eddie Funkhouser Quattro Variable Mascara – value: $12.99 (My Price: $6.19)

This isn’t a bad mascara! I haven’t ever tried this brand before so I didn’t know what to expect. The brush isn’t fluffy; it has four rows of combs, is the best way I can describe it. I like my mascara brushes to be similar to this because I look for separation and definition with my mascaras. The main downside for me with this product is that it was very flaky when removing, even with a good eye makeup remover, and I found flakes of it still on different parts of my face when applying my makeup the next day.

Gleam Body Radiance Highlighter – value: $15 (My Price: $7.14)

This highlighter isn’t for me. It’s a very yellow/gold highlighter. I’m so pale that I really need white, cream, or very light pink highlighters for my skin tone. (swatch below)

Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - items 4

Here’s a before and after application of the mascara. Also, the OFRA eyeliner is what I used in both of the photos, too.

Top: ‘Tini Beauty Eye Cordial in Dirty Martini, Bottom: Gleam Body Radiance Highlighter

29 Reserves Grape Seed Age Protection Lipstick, in Wine Critic – value: $25 (My Price: $11.91)

This lipstick is a pretty shade, and quite moisturizing. It’s not very opaque, though, so you can layer it for a more intense color or just swipe once for less.

Wantable Makeup Subscription Box Review November 2015 - items 6

Top: OFRA Brown Eyeliner, Bottom: 29 Reserves Lipstick (2 swipes)

Verdict: This was a pretty good Wantable Makeup box. I’m glad I got to try some new brands and colors/products I wouldn’t necessarily pick up myself. Also, when you leave a note in your feedback for the person who puts together your box, they can send a response on your info sheet. The girl who put together my box this month called me by the name of the town I live in! A simple mistake – I’m sure she just looked in the wrong place or saw my address and had that in her head when she wrote her response. Kind of funny, though. The value of this box adds up to $83.99, which is a value I’m happy with.

I’m on the fence with this one. I used to really look forward to it; now there might be 1 or 2 things I like.

Wantable used to be great, a few years ago. They once sent boxes of like $130 in value, etc, but they have just gotten so boring with their brands and values are way down. Plus, let’s be real: This is all stuff that we see in ipsy ALL THE TIME.

true for what little I got this time I said uh no dropping you just doing their clothes for awhile to see how that goes

It would be nice if hey would add some good brands like smash box, Kay Von d, benefit etc. seems like they just choose cheap overpriced make up brands that have he price jacked up – for instance OFRA

Agreed. Tini and OFRA are super cheap quality brands. I sort of expect them in an ipsy bag but I’d be livid to get them in a customized $40 beauty sub. I unsubscribed when they changed their subscription model to this returnable product version and I’m glad I did. All three Wantable subs began sending fewer items of even lower quality than before but at a higher price point. All this is missing is some Starlooks (which they’ve sent before) and it would border on the being the most overpriced beauty box I’ve seen yet. It’s sad because I used to love Wantable and subbed to all 3 monthly.

Another great review Haley!

I stopped my Wantables Makeup subscription after three months. I received some new to me brands but the staying power and quality just didn’t feel right compared to the cost of the box.

I stalk other people who receive the box on social media just to get an idea of what’s being sent out to others because I’m a total box addict. If they update the box with more well known, higher end brands, I would jump back on and subscribe!

Sadly, at the moment, I don’t think Ofra, ModelCo or the other brands they send work as well as I would like and I think spending that ~$100 in the three months was not as great an experience as I had hoped.

With a $40 “Customizable” price point there should be at least one or two known brands and the ability to add your skin tones and preferable color palette. It is nice to get some new name products to try but I find it hard to believe the lipstick and shadow were retail listed at over twice the price given to the subscriber? The name Wantables would mean to me stuff I was hoping to get and/or excited to receive. Haley, who is always upbeat and courteous seemed pretty underwhelmed. For forty bucks you should get some sort of WOW! factor, not a….. *yawn*

Haley

Thanks for reading, nursermk! The way the retail/my price works is that if I were to return an item, I get the “my price” credited back to my Wantable account. The “my prices” all add up to the cost of the box, and the retail is whatever they sell for from the brand.

And the level of customization IS very thorough! The preferences list I show in the post is merely categories. When you take the actual preferences test, they ask much more thorough questions like if you prefer cool tones or warm, what formulas you prefer (such as cream, pressed powder, loose powder, etc for things like eyeshadow, blush, foundation, bronzers, setting powders, etc), what shades of lip products you want to receive (berries, pinks, reds, corals, nudes, deep neutrals) and what formulas (glosses, lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, etc). Those are just a couple examples!! I was impressed with the level of customization. They just don’t show that much detail in the preferences summary on your info cards. I’ll be sure to clarify that in future reviews!

Laura

But they didn’t pay attention to your preferences – I thought you had highlighters under your dislike column but you ended up receiving a highlighter.

Lauren Guzman

I would take another look at the Gleam Body radiance. I met the owner/creator of Gleam at The Makeup Show Dallas and it’s meant to be worn on your arms/legs, etc. Not your face. She has been the head makeup artist on Dancing With The Stars and it never really occurred to me that they need the full body makeup. She realized there was a gap in the market and so she created her own body makeup. I like the rose gold shade personally, but you still might get a nice sheen on your arms or legs if you didn’t want the product to go to waste!

Haley

Great idea – thanks for that information, Lauren! I might try that out, but I don’t have a need for body makeup in the winter. I’ll have to stash it and dig it out for summer in a few months. =]

Lauren Guzman

I like to wear it with dresses. Def makes my arms and legs look much better (and 100% less pasty.) but you are totally right, this isn’t great for winter. Just remember me and Gleam in the spring! If you sign up for her emails, she regularly sends coupon codes. I sound like I’m repping her but I’m not! She was just so nice and I genuinely like her products!

Alicia

I love wantables intimate subscriptions but I would never get their makeup. It’s way overpriced and doesn’t have good brands in it. Ofra is overpriced, to me it’s more of a drugstore makeup which some of the are better. I could never pay almost $50 for this, I wouldn’t even pay $20!

Chelsea

I’m really confused how this subscription box is staying in business. $46 (counting shipping) for a box of makeup full of small products and brands I’ve never heard of? Plus dealing with sending the box/items back if you don’t want them in order to get a refund? If you’re loving this box then more power to you.

Haley

Chelsea, this is only my second box. I’m liking it alright, but I am also looking forward to seeing how future boxes tailor to my preferences and feedback as we move forward! I have found a couple products I enjoy using from it so far, though. Thanks for reading!
