Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs. Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size. Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds). This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 82 pounds).

Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review October 2015 - card2

There was a card in the box, although it didn’t say anything about the included items. (For the record, this arrived on Halloween. So I guess the theme was timely…)

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review October 2015 - toys

Spot Beyond Tough Bone – Value $7.99

Well, Nyx is an expert at finding the weakest point in a toy to exploit. Here, it was the black border around the bone. She had damaged it within 60 seconds and had part of it removed within 5 minutes. Granted, Nyx is the single most destructive dog I have ever had, when it comes to toys. This might last longer with other dogs.

Halloween Boingo Eyeball Toy by Vo-Toys – Value $18

This has (had) a squeaker and stretchy legs. It actually lasted Nyx a little while because the stretchy legs made it difficult for her to rip apart…

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review October 2015 - treats

Pawsitively Gourmet Dog Cookie – Value $1.30

These are only available wholesale and/or via Amazon in bulk. I couldn’t find this exact cookie for sale except on wholesale sites (where I didn’t have access to pricing), but their prices seem to be the same for each cookie type, so I linked to another from the same manufacturer above. (They don’t actually have chicken liver in them, despite the product listing on Amazon…)

Puptato Chips (2 oz) – Value $5

These are dehydrated sweet potato chips. I’ll be passing them along to my parents’ dogs since they apparently have a little chicken liver in them, which Nyx can’t have with her IBD. They’re made in the USA, which is great.

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review October 2015 - shirt

Halloween Shirt – Value $10 (?)

I think this is a custom item because the whole “smell my what?” line was in the information card, too. Mine had a sticker that said XL, but there was no way that was big enough to put over a Rottweiler head. I don’t know that sized items belong in a dog box, especially for 50+ pound dogs. You could have a 51 pound dog or a full-grown Great Dane or St. Bernard getting that box. You’d probably be able to get the shirt on a dog in the smaller end of the size range, but it’s kind of useless for a large or giant breed.

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review October 2015 - mailbox

And, I have to give a shout out to my weekend mailman, who must possess super strength and is clearly in the wrong line of work. Because he managed to shove this entire box in my mailbox, despite the fact that THE BOX IS BIGGER THAN THE MAILBOX. It took two adults (with PhDs in science fields), a butter knife, and a good 15 minutes to get the box out of there. (The mailman had to come up to the front porch anyway to deliver some Amazon packages so why he decided to do this is beyond me…)

Verdict: I calculated a value of a little over $42. That’s pretty good for a $25 box (and almost double the value if you pay for a yearly subscription). The dog shirt/costume wasn’t of a lot of use to us, and the eyeball toy seems a bit overpriced (but that’s what it was selling for online). Still, I think the variety of items was nice and they did a good job of sticking to a Halloween theme.

We also received this exact box. I did contact the company and complained about the shirt being way too small, the toys useless after maybe a minute and I was surprised that the expensive box tried to pass off a single cookie, a very small bag of chips and a very small chew as a great deal. They did credit my account and I have to add they were extremely helpful and nice. Let’s hope the next month is better. I purchased a 3 month sub to try out. Our bark box was much better, but still had the issue of easily destructible toys.

Were the Amazon packages actually delivered by the USPS? It varies I’ve noticed and some of what I’ve ordered comes with FedEx and when I first had Prime, it was sent by USPS but I canceled and for a while and then just signed up again last month and it seems like some of our Prime items are being shipped with Fedex or we’re getting two deliveries in the same day by the USPS.

USPS now has the Prime contract, this is very recent. My packages are taking a day longer to get here, even though they are saying “2-Day” shipping. The mailman told me they have no idea how they are going to deliver all the packages over the holidays.

99% of my Amazon packages come USPS (I get 40 or so a month — don’t ask…). I have Prime but usually get stuff in 12 hours even if I don’t select one day delivery because there is a distribution center nearby. The other 1% are usually LaserShip (a local courier). This was on a Saturday, anyway.

The part about the mailman forcing the package into your mailbox is hilarious! (Well, it probably wasn’t at the time). I’ve only tried PupJoy and BarkBox. We liked them both, but I’m going back to PupJoy since my Barkbox sub just ran out (had a Groupon). Our dog is only 17 lbs, so she’s not too destructive, but the toys have been pretty sturdy! I like that you can customize PupJoy for types of toys – I think they have an option for dogs that tear everything apart.

It would be tricky to include a shirt for a dog in the vague 50+ lbs category. My bassets who are just at 50lbs would be fine with an XL. The bull mastiff next door, not so much. And he would be hurt to see Zelda in her shirt and he not able to wear his. But it is just too cute!
I had to give up the pet boxes. It’s too hard on my DH to see the box AND the toys that came in it go out in the same trash.

Due to my mother having a dire love of Amazon/ebay as well as her own retail business, we get a LOT of small to medium sized packages at our house. We also have the world’s laziest mail lady who refuses to get out of her car and just sits outside and honks. So we invested in a mailbox that is extra large. You can seriously fit a medium sized toddler in there with room to spare.

I’ll probably end up having to do the same. That picture of the mailbox made me laugh so hard because I’ve been in that situation trying to get a box out of it. My mailman has to hate me by now.

I got a similar box, same issue with the shirt and the toys. My dog looked like a sausage stuffed into a casing when I put the shirt on. The toys were done within seconds, I wasn’t impressed and I canceled. I am thinking of trying BarkBox after Black Friday.

I have to recommend Pet Treater! I signed up for 2 boxes from them since I have 2 different sized dogs and both of their boxes in October were AWESOME!

We received a similar one in the mail, but yours is definitely cuter! Also had the same problem with size. I put it on Gypsy and it basically looked like a belly shirt, when couples with her tutu for Halloween actually worked out, but otherwise it looks like I sent my dog out half naked. :/

The costume we received was way too small, so I emailed the company. They responded quickly and said they would send a replacement item in the next box. I love the idea of costumes and dog apparel, but it seems impossible due to huge variations in size.

Good to know. (I didn’t bother to contact them since I’m not a regular subscriber.)

Oh my, I realized I totally overlooked the chew in the picture with the Puptato Chips and cookie. I will look that up and post a comment with the value.
