Baklavva Subscription Box Review + Coupon October 2015 - 4

I have had a lifelong love affair with baklava.  The crispy layers, drenched in sticky honey, mixed with spices and nuts is just heaven in my mouth.  Unfortunately, it's never had a moment, like cupcakes or macarons, but it is rave worthy nonetheless.  If you like baklava, you know that it isn't the easiest treat to find here in the US!  When this box came along, it was like a dream come true!

With the 1 pound subscription, they promise 14-16 pieces in each shipment.  My shipment had 4 each of 4 different selections of baklava, so this box is right on target so far.  They say that if you store the treats at room temperature, they should last about 14 days, and they also give recommended freshness times for the refrigerator and freezer.

These are the four types of baklava I received:  baklava, mini roses, fingers, and bird nest.  I am definitely not a food photographer, but figured I would put some of it on a plate so you can see the individual shape and layers of each treat.

Here's my confession time:  I've been sick with a cold for a week, which means my taste buds are on vacation somewhere in Jamaica without me.  I received this box late last week and hoped that by now I would be able to taste it!  No such luck.  So I did eat one of each, but I can't tell you this is the best stuff ever, because...I can't taste it.  The texture was great - maybe a little drier than I've had in the past.  There was just the right amount of sticky, but not so much that it was dripping off my fingers.  I cannot wait until I can finally taste my food again so I can enjoy this box!

The verdict:  Due to the nature of this box, I don't have a 'value' of the items for you.  With the cost of the 1 pound box plus shipping, you're paying about $1.50 per piece of baklava.  That is actually very reasonable compared to what I've purchased it for at specialty shops.  I realize that this box isn't going to be for everyone - if you have an amazing Mediterranean bakery right next door to you, this isn't going to be your thing.  For those of us that aren't in that enviable situation...we have this!  And it is the closest thing to Heaven being delivered to your doorstep you can get (in my oh-so-humble opinion).

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

I got this box and wasn’t very impressed. I mean they look great and the wonderful texture is there, but these tasted very doughy. Very little in terms of the nut filler that I’m used to having.
Sam’s Club has 31oz trays of baklava for just under $14 and those are amazing!

I bought the 3 lb box when there was a half-off coupon. I love baklava and it has been my absolute favorite dessert since I was a kid, but I wasn’t super impressed with the quality of this product.

I only received 4 pieces of the bird nest variety, which is the only one with discernible nuts. All three of the other varieties use a nut paste, which isn’t bad, but doesn’t present a lot of variety or the nut texture that I love. There are other online bakeries that ship faster and have a better nut ratio for the same price per pound.

Oh how I love Baklava! I have not seen it around in years until recently. I saw it at a Farmer’s Market at a Mediterranean stand around $2.50-$3.50 per piece. Then this past weekend an Italian Market which has the best of everything had it at around $1.10-$1.50 per piece. That being said it sounds like the price point is on target. Plus no gas and time wasted and what appears to be lots of variety which is new to me. I am only familiar with the classic.

So, I purchased the three pound box when there was a post on MSA a few weeks ago where your first month was half off. So it was around $25. I purchased it for my husband since he loves baklavva. It arrived last week and he’s on the second pack out of three. I’m not a baklavva fan. It’s usually too sweet for me but it was good. It wasn’t too sweet or too sticky.

Bekki, as an ICU nurse, let me send some “Nursey” vibes in hopes you will get well soon–sorry you are under the weather!
Hmmm….I am interested in trying this box. Not sure $24/lb of what looks like basic Baklava is a good value; if they have a special or coupon for under $20 total I would definitely give it a try! I love this stuff so will keep an eye out for future reviews.

I was so hoping you would review this box because I was wanting to subscribe to it. And hahaha at the lasts up to 14 days in my house I’ll be happy if it lasts 14 minutes! Feel better soon I’ve had bronchitis and pneumonia for 7 weeks now I’m just hoping my taste buds are back in time for Thanksgiving!
