Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs. Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size. Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds). This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 82 pounds).

Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review September 2015 - toys

Multipet Rope and Rubber Dog Toy – Value $6.97

This toy smells a little like rubber, probably from being enclosed in the box for a few days, but Nyx loves it. She’s quite destructive, in general, but Multipet toys hold up longer than most for her. So far, so good.

Hyper Pet Tennis Balls (qty. 4) – Value $9.99

Hyper Pet tennis balls are supposed to be pet safe. We will see. Nyx has two goals when it comes to tennis balls – (1) eat the fuzzy coating and (2) get three in her mouth at the same time. These are a little smaller than regular tennis balls – and she can fit two of those in her mouth – so she may achieve goal #2. (She has already achieved goal #1…)

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review September 2015 - treats1

Jones Natural Chews Windees (1.3 oz) – Value $4.86

Windees are dried beef tracheas. That sounds gross, but Nyx has had these in the past (before her inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis) and she LOVED them. This is made in the USA.

Barkworthies Curly Bully Stick (qty. 1) – Value $3.19

This is a single ingredient chew (hope there’s no need to elaborate on what the single ingredient is…). It is sourced from Brazil, Argentina, or Colombia. Surprise My Pet does NOT source treats from China, which is great.

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review September 2015 - treats2

Healthy Dogma Jamaican Bacon Flavor Barkers (6.2 oz) – Value $5.95

Healthy Dogma is a new brand discovery for me. These are heart-shaped dog cookies. The first couple of ingredients are peas, pea flour, and potato, but they do also have bacon and chicken fat in them. I appreciate that they’re grain free, and they’re also made in the USA!

Roasted Chicken Buddy Biscuits (6 oz) – Value $5.99

Buddy Biscuits are also made in the USA. They’re small, soft treats and they’re free of corn, soy, and artificial colors and flavors. Nyx can’t have chicken and wheat, so these are out, but my parents are coming to take care of her in a few weeks when I go out of town, and I’m going to send them home with these. I know their dogs will love them.

Surprise My Pet Subscription Box Review September 2015 - nyx

Nyx didn’t want to pose for a photo; this is the best one I got. She was very interested in the tennis balls right away, as you can see, though she looks a little crazy with the flash reflecting off her eyes!

Verdict: I calculated a value of $36.95. That’s pretty good for a $25 box (and almost double the value if you pay for a yearly subscription). A lot of dog boxes have a lower value-to-cost ratio, but every time I’ve reviewed Surprise My Pet, the value has been good. Nyx liked the toys and the treats appear to be high quality. Also, I discovered a couple of new brands, which is great.

It looks like a great box! I’d be quite interested in trying it once they start shipping to Canada. Do you know of any amazing toys for big dogs that like to chew stuff a lot (and I mean, A LOT)? Like balls or squeaky toys?

I posted a list of items my dog can’t destroy. It has a lot of links, though, so it’ll take awhile to show up. These are things I feel safe leaving with her when I’m not around, too.

I have a medium sized, not very destructive Sheltie. How does this compare to Bark Box?

Ragan

I liked this one better than Barkbox but my dog is large and destructive. There are fewer exclusive items (which can be a good thing if you want to find them again at a store or online) and not much of a theme (but then, my dog doesn’t care about a theme…).

I have tried so many pet boxes for my 100lb lab. The final straw was the tiny stuffed elephant about the size of his head. None have come close to the Surprise My Pet box in appropriate sized items. They were $39., then they lowered the price to $25 and you can get it below $20 with a longer subscription. Super excited, hope they continue to have fetch, chew, slobber things in the large dog box.

This looks like a good box. My dog is a heavy chewer so sturdy toys are a must. Do you know if they tailor by size if dog or chewer type?

rmw2010

Not by chewer type for sure. I have a heavy chewer and her last box was completely destroyed within minutes, literally. Plush toys were laughable and the treats were like bite sized appetizers. I did contact them and asked about the chewing issue and they said they have not gotten there yet with helping heavy chewers out. I’ll wait to resub until they do.

Definitely by size. Not sure about chewer type. (My dog is a VERY heavy chewer, though, so I sympathize. Most toys don’t last too long with her.) They do have a replacement guarantee if your dog is not interested in something, though.

I feel like these are toys you can get at TJ Maxx. Uninspiring.
