Included in the box is a leaflet detailing the week’s smoothies. Each recipe includes step-by-step instructions, a juice-by date, and nutritional information.
Smoothie #1- Pineapple Frost
Ingredients: celery, baby spinach, mint, pear, pineapple, wheatgrass powder, water, and ice
(Note that the orange in this photo is actually part of recipe #4. I think it rolled into bag #1 during transit, and I didn’t catch that it wasn’t a part of the Pineapple Frost recipe until after I’d taken my photos.)
On their website, Farmivore suggests using one of the following performance blenders: Vitamix, Nutribullet, Blendtec, Magic Bullet, or Ninja. I used a Magic Bullet, which blended the smoothies really well. It was too small to blend an entire batch at once, though, so I had make one smoothie at a time. (Not that this was a problem. The recipes were easy to cut in half.)
I made the smoothies in the order they were listed, since the first smoothies had the earliest “best by” dates. I began with the Pineapple Frost. I liked the combination of fresh mint, pineapple, and pear, and I thought this was a tasty green smoothie with a nice sweetness.
Smoothie #2- Baby Spice Cake
Ingredients: golden flaxseed, rolled oats (GF), baby spinach, almond milk, apple, banana, cinnamon, and ice
Farmivore gives all of their recipes creative names, which I like. Baby Spice Cake contains oats, almond milk, and cinnamon and, while it didn’t really taste like cake, it turned out to be my favorite of the week’s smoothies. The banana and cinnamon flavors were at the forefront, which made this a great breakfast smoothie.
Smoothie #3- Summer Thyme
Ingredients- chia seeds, thyme, Swiss chard, water, pear, lemon, hemp protein powder, and ice
I usually love juices and smoothies with strong herbal flavors, but this smoothie didn’t quite work for me. While I like green juices that only have a hint of sweetness, I think I prefer my smoothies to be a little more fruit forward. (Of course, this is a matter of personal preference, and not a negative reflection on the recipe itself.)
Smoothie #4- Orange Julius
Ingredients: oranges, turmeric root powder, almond milk, banana, mesquite powder, vanilla bean powder, ice
(Note that this smoothie also utilized the orange featured in the photo for recipe #1. Additionally, I should point out that Farmivore included only one carton of almond milk; however, I’ve included it the ingredient photo for each recipe that utilizes it.)
Orange Julius is the smoothie I was most excited to try from this box. I thought with the mix of orange, vanilla, and almond milk this smoothie might taste like a creamsicle! Unfortunately, I didn’t really like the addition of mesquite powder and turmeric. While the resulting flavor was unexpected (and certainly creative), I think I would have preferred the smoothie without these ingredients.
Smoothie #5- Cacao Cashew Cream
Ingredients: GF rolled oats, cashews, almond milk, banana, cacao powder, and ice
This smoothie was by far the most indulgent- it tasted like a healthier version of a chocolate milkshake! I really enjoyed it, and I was happy to end my week with something chocolaty and sweet.
Verdict: I enjoyed my week of Farmivore smoothies. Even though I didn’t love all of them, I had fun sampling the creative blends. I did have a couple of small issues with the produce in this box that I should mention. There was a soft spot on one of the oranges that I had to cut off, and I had to pick out a few leaves of bad spinach. I’ve tried Farmivore before, and I’ve never had a problem with their produce, so I’m inclined to forgive these small problems.
I like that Farmivore makes juicing and blending easy by delivering everything you need to make delicious, healthy juices and smoothies at home. I enjoy making smoothies for breakfast, but I rarely have everything on hand that I need to make them. Receiving this box every week would definitely encourage me to blend more frequently!
