Craft Beer Club Subscription Box Review August 2015 - MadRiver

Jamaica Red Ale by Mad River Brewing Company 6.5% ABV

Northern Califormia’s Mad River Brewing Company has an entire line of beers inspired by Jamaica’s famous brews. This red ale has “an intense spectrum of spicy aromatic hop character balanced by a full-bodied caramel richness.” Impressively, this beer won a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival! I was expecting this beer to taste a little like Red Stripe (probably because my experience with Jamaican beers is pretty limited), but I think this beer has a much stronger, more complex flavor. I think it’s fantastic, and I suspect it’ll be the first beer to disappear from this month’s box.

Steelhead Porter by Mad River Brewing Company 6.5% ABV

I’m a big fan of dark beers, so I’m always excited when Craft Beer Club sends a porter or a stout. This porter is made with Scottish smoked and peated malts that add a smoky flavor. I’m a big fan of this creative brews, and I like this twist on a classic porter. I think it’s interesting, rich, and complex.

Craft Beer Club Subscription Box Review August 2015 - Peak

Summer Session Ale by Peak Organic Brewery 5% ABV

The second brewery featured in this month’s Craft Beer Club box is Portland, Maine’s Peak Organic Brewing Company. (I’m thrilled to see an organic brewery featured in this month’s box!) The Summer Session Ale is “a traditional summer wheat beer [that] marries a West Coast pale ale.” I’ve never heard to such a mix, but I think it makes sense to pair wheat beer with citrusy hops. The result is really delicious, and, to me, the Summer Session Ale tastes a lot like grapefruit!

Peak Organic Brewery IPA 7.2%

Peak Organic Brewery uses Simcoe, Amarillo, and Nugget hops in this IPA. It’s made without traditional bittering agents, which helps preserve the citrus and floral characteristics. Peak Organic suggests pairing this beer with smoked meats and spicy foods.

The Verdict: I really enjoy receiving beers from The Craft Beer Club. I think this subscription is a great way to explore interesting brews from around the country, and I’ve had a great time sampling beers from America’s craft breweries. This month, the Summer Session Ale and Steelhead Porter were standouts for me! Value wise, the cost breaks down to just over $3 per beer. While I can pick up craft beers for less at the grocery or liquor store, I appreciate that The Craft Beer Club sends brews that I may not be able to find locally. I can definitely recommend this subscription for beer lovers looking to try new craft beers from around the country!
