Broccoleaf or Bust! (Green Juice #1)- broccoleaf, apple, carrot, lemon, cucumber, and pear
Broccoleaf, the leaves that grow on and around broccoli plants, are high in vitamin c and calcium. I’ve never had broccoleaf before, so I was excited to see it included in this recipe. Broccoleaf has a sweet, mild flavor (reminiscent of sugar snap peas) with a touch of pleasant bitterness, and it added a nice verdant quality to this juice. While this juice wasn’t the prettiest (it was a greenish brown) I thought it was really tasty. The lemon added a nice tart flavor, and I thought the apple and pear brought just the right amount of sweetness.
Mint Medley (Green Juice #2)- mint, spinach, apple, cucumber, and pear
I love anything with mint and cucumber, so (unsurprisingly) this was my favorite juice. The flavor was very mild, with just a slight sweetness, and the mint added a lovely freshness. If I could only use one word to describe this juice, it would be “refreshing.” It made me a little sad to drink this juice while watching snow flurries outside my window- this is a juice that makes you want to sit in a sunny garden.
Carrot Twist (Mixed Juice #1)- apple, carrot, celery, lemon, and sweet potato
This juice was bright and flavorful. I’ve made the mistake of putting too much celery in my juice before (I think the flavor can be overpowering if it’s not balanced properly) but this recipe included the perfect amount. I’m going to hang on to this recipe because I think this would be a great morning juice. I’d like to try serving it at breakfast. Or maybe at brunch (with a little champagne!)
California Dream (Mixed Juice #2)- orange, lemon, apple, beet, and carrot
Carrot and orange is one of my favorite juice blends, so I was excited to see this twist on the classic recipe. I thought the beets were a delicious addition, and also made the juice a beautiful beet red. Unsurprisingly, both the California Dream and the Carrot Twist were noticeably sweeter than the green juice blends, so that’s something to keep in mind when choosing your box.
Here are the prepared juices (in the order they were reviewed). I love how vibrant the colors are. Also, note that this is not the full amount of juice yielded from each recipe. On average, each recipe made about 32 oz of juice.
Verdict: I’m really impressed by Farmivore. The produce arrived in great condition, the recipes were delicious, and I think the value is good. If I bought the same amount of produce at my local farmers’ market, I think I would spend about the same amount ($39.95), and I believe there’s added value in the curation of the recipes. I like that the produce is local (when possible), organic, and non-GMO. The recipe leaflet provided really helpful information, and I liked being given a suggested juicing order for each recipe and a juice-by date.
I love to juice, but I don’t do it very often because I grocery shop with meals in mind and very rarely have enough extra produce on hand. I also tend to juice without a recipe, which can lead to some pretty unpalatable concoctions. I like that Farmivore makes juicing easy by delivering everything you need to make delicious, healthy juices at home. Receiving this box every week would definitely encourage me to juice more often!
