Rescue Box February 2018 Box

RescueBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs or cats. For dogs, choose from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). They are associated with Greater Good (the folks who brought you The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site, and more), and your purchase of a subscription will help provide food and vaccines to shelter pets!

RescueBox February 2018 Review

This box is pretty reliably holiday-themed in months where there is a major holiday occurring, but they did Valentine’s Day last month. This month’s theme was “Monster Mania,” which, honestly, I thought was a lot of fun:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box and more information on The Rescue Box’s charity efforts.

Rescue Box February 2018 Rope

Twisted Chews by Petsport USA - Listed Value $5.99

So I could find this for sale online, but not at any US-based sources, and with the variety of rope toys available for dogs in the US, I just don’t think it would be worth paying for international shipping. The value on the information card seems reasonable, so that’s what I’ve listed above. Nyx has had this exact toy before, also from a subscription box, and she loved it then. I would not say this was super durable and you should watch your dog with it at first, especially if your dog is a destructive chewer like Nyx.

Rescue Box February 2018 Jerky

Colorado Naturals Chicken Jerky, 4 oz. - Retail Value $3.22

This is made in the USA from 100% real meat at a USDA-inspected facility. That is super important with jerky-style dog treats. The manufacturer suggests only giving this to dogs 6 months and older, for safety purposes. Unfortunately, Nyx can’t have chicken due to her inflammatory bowel disease, but there are several large dogs in my extended family who would be happy to take it off my hands. (You can’t customize this box based on dietary preferences so it’s going to work best for dogs without allergies or food sensitivities.)

Rescue Box February 2018 Lenny

Lenny Greybar by Patchwork PetRetail Value $8.99

I was pleased to see several toys this month. I suspected Nyx would love this one and I was right! This is a plush toy with a squeaker and rope arms, and a channel in the middle of the body where the rope arms can be pulled to either side without damaging the toy. The outer fuzzy coating can be pulled off in small bits pretty easily (there is a photo below of Nyx with some stuck to her lips) so I would suggest supervising your dog closely. Either way, Nyx had a ton of fun with this.

Rescue Box February 2018 Monster Mouth

Monster Mouth Toy by Jolly Pets - Retail Value $8.92

Nyx has also had one of these before, but it’s one of those rubber toys that she will chew on even if I don’t put a treat inside the mouth, so we’re happy to get another. These are pretty durable, based on our past experience, and they’re also easy to clean.

Rescue Box February 2018 Cookie

Monster Cookie by Preppy Puppy - Listed Value $6.99

Preppy Puppy is a wholesale-only company. Their website says their treats are free of wheat, corn, and soy, but I don’t know what the other ingredients here are, so I am holding off on giving it to Nyx for now (she can’t have grain). I was sort of sad this was a dog cookie because I think it is adorable and I would totally eat something that looked like this (and now I am going to go out and look for monster or alien cookie cutters…). I think the information card value is a bit inflated, to be honest, but I don’t really have anything else to go on.

Here are some shots of Nyx with the “Lenny Greybar” toy. My favorites are the one where she’s sitting on it and the one where she’s lying down. She pulled on the rope arms, which move through the toy instead of being permanently attached in one position, and kept pulling, and then fell over on her side, which was hilarious.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $34.11 for February’s Rescue Box.  That is about $4 higher than the cost of the box on a month-to-month basis, so it is a reasonably good deal even if you consider one or two of the information card prices to be inflated. The toys are great for Nyx but due to the treat ingredients, I’d most likely not recommend this box for dogs with allergies or food sensitivities. Healthy dogs should have no trouble, though.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be March.

For a limited time,  use coupon code FREEMONTH to get your first box FREE when you sign up for a 6-month subscription to RescueBox! (Regularly $29.95 per month)

Value Breakdown: At a box price of $29.95, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Rope $5.26
  • Jerky treats $2.83
  • Plush toy $7.89
  • Monster mouth toy $7.83
  • Cookie $6.14
