OREO Cookie Club is a subscription box that delivers two deliciously different OREO experiences – sometimes a new flavor, sometimes a familiar favorite – with fun OREO swag and a delicious recipe.

OREO Cookie Club February 2018 Review

OREO recently launched a "cookie club" subscription box and we knew we had to check it out. It doesn't come with info cards detailing what you get, so I do my best to find the flavors online and try to estimate the value of the included OREO-inspired gift.

Anna and I also did an OREO tasting last month which you can still view via our Instagram story highlights (mobile only). Feel free to check it out!

Now, let's see what February brought us!

Limited Edition Olympics OREOs, 15.35 oz. - Retail Value $2.99

I'm not surprised that these were included this month, seeing though everyone and their mother is talking about the Olympics. While I haven't watched any winter events myself, I am a fan of eating cookies, so these were relevant to my interests. On the upside, the chocolate cookie portion has special designs on one side of the sandwich, while the other bears the classic OREO design. From what I can tell, the five designs are skiers, figure skaters, and snowboarders, and then two USA-themed ones. On the downside, these do not have a limited edition flavor which I was hoping for, just the original chocolate OREO. They are also available at large retailers, so they're not exclusive to the box (which we found to be true last month as well).

They also include a recipe to make these fun Olympic medals out of the cookies. These would be perfect for an Olympic viewing party.

OREO Thin Bites, Original, 6 oz. - Retail Value $2.99

The next featured OREO comes in the form of fudge-dipped minis.  I honestly didn't notice that these were "thin" because they were just mini shrunken versions of OREOs that have been dipped into chocolate fudge. The whole cookie is there, with cream and all, just itsy bitsy and really snackable. These are really easy to eat a lot of in a short period of time and come in a resealable bag. Again, this isn't an exclusive item to the cookie club box and seem to be widely available. Sort of a bummer, but I wouldn't have known they existed otherwise.

OREO Hot Cocoa Mix, 1.23 oz packet - Buy a box of 8 for $3.83

This is the same hot cocoa packet we received two of in the last box. If you read last month's review you'll know that I described it as like making hot chocolate with crushed up OREOs, which holds true. Not a huge value here since you can buy a box of 8 for a little over the price of a package of regular OREO cookies. Tasty though!

OREO Virtual Reality Viewer

That brings us to the final item, which is the OREO inspired gift. Here, we have a virtual reality viewer! I haven't used one of these before, but its kind of a fun idea although not terribly cookie-related. The viewer itself is made of sturdy plastic and collapsible rubber bellows with a place to put your peepers to check out the video on one end, and a clip to slide in your smartphone into the other end. You'll have to scan the included QR code with your smartphone first, which will open up a YouTube video that OREO has created for this experience. You'll also need to tap on the icon at the bottom right of the screen that looks like a pair of 3D glasses to make sure it displays int he right way. Then, you slide your phone into the clip to hold it in place and look through the viewer to experience floating down a lazy river filled with milk and OREO delights. I have to say, it's pretty trippy looking through the viewer and moving it around to see what's above and around you as you float through the river. I noticed there are a couple others as well that pop up once the short video ends. Pretty cool, I will definitely use this viewer to check out other VR videos I can find online. While you can't buy this exact OREO-branded VR viewer, I did find a few wholesalers with similar looking viewers online for a pretty low cost (only with high minimums of at least 100 pieces, of course) from $3.00-$5.00. I couldn't find something similar to buy just one of, so it's hard to put a value on.

Verdict: OREO Cookie Club Subscription Box costs $19.99 per box (a minimum purchase of a 3-month subscription for $59.97) and I received 2 full-size OREO cookie products, a packet of OREO hot cocoa mix, and an OREO VR viewer (plus a recipe). While the treats are all available to purchase at various retailers, the free gift seems like they will always be exclusive. Since each of the packages of cookies only retail for $2.99, and the single pack of hot cocoa mix maybe has a value of less than $0.50, so you're pretty much paying the remaining $13.51 for the VR viewer to break even. I had high hopes for OREO Cookie Club, but the first two months haven't really delivered anything special to me as a subscriber. The only value here would seem to be for someone who is really an OREO collector and would geek out on the exclusive gifts.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It is unclear.

Value Breakdown: At $19.99 for this box, you're paying approximately $5.00 per item.

They could do 4 of those sleeves of different flavors from around the world or flavors they are testing out for 15 dollars plus a coupon and a recipe and this would be fun and worth it, to throw 2 regular flavored things in a box with a really silly promotional items for around 20 bucks is just horrible marketing.

I would only order this box if I were drunk shopping which I usually do once or twice a month.

It’s $19 be not $60. Where did that come from? Ok I get it but that’s not so bad. You’re still getting Oreos and if you’re buying an Oreo subscription box it must be love.

You can’t only buy one box for $19.99, though. You have to sign up for 3 months minimum for $60. That’s where people are getting that amount from. And so far in the first two months she has only gotten 3 full-size packages of Oreos (all flavors readily available at stores) and one bag of fudge covered minis….plus 3 packages of hot chocolate ($.50 each) and Oreo merchandise. So people are pointing out that is really only about $13.50 worth of actual Oreo food plus “filler” for the $40 worth of boxes so far….and they would rather spend their total of $60 on about 20 packages of Oreos at their local store if they loved Oreos that much….

Who came up with this subscription? It’s $60 just for cheap Oreos that you can buy at your local store much cheaper.

It’s $19

You must make a 3 month minimum purchase– that’s why it is $60 to subscribe.

Not weird enough, I need this to get even weirder. An Oreo subscription box that costs 60 dollars and has a virtual reality viewer AND transports me to Narnia AND is hand-delivered by badgers.

And you didn’t even get the Peeps Oreos (that I purchased at Walmart last week).

A virtual reality viewer?? Weirdness of that product aside, it’s disappointing that they aren’t including exclusive flavors that can’t be bought in stores. This box is way overpriced. Boo.

Not being rude but do you have to comment on every users post about the $60? Let’s see since we are getting so technical , then you are also wrong because it’s not $20.00 it’s $19.97, in Nich then you can’t even purchase it because they would like an entire 3 months installment at minimum for 59.97, and of course the price goes up for the 6 month and the year subscription and honestly I’m not wasting any more time on this scrolling up to see prices. So all I’m saying is before you try to be so technical be sure that all your ducks are also in a row, you can not just buy a month subscription , and even then your numbers were off. Have a great day 🙂

Agreeing with Sammee — $19.99 for $6.50 worth of Oreo product plus an odd piece of “merchandise” is overpriced. And locking you in for 3 months of it (at $60 total) is a rip-off.

Sammee

$19 is overpriced.

Aarjullor

$60 for 6 packs of Oreos, and Oreo related junk. My local Walmart neighbourhood market is 1/2 mile from my house. They have a huge selection of Oreos, including rare/hard to get varieties for $3 a pack. With $20, I can get 6 packs of Oreos and a gallon of milk.

I’m beginning to feel like this ” sub” and the reviews are just free advertising for Oreo.

Adeline

yeah I would much rather take my $60 to walmart

I think the hope with a box like this is access to unique flavors (flavors that haven’t debuted yet, international flavors, more rare flavors). But I could make a better and cheaper box just by going to my local grocery store

Reply ButtonReply

Sammee

That would make sense but so far I don’t think they’ve sent any flavors that can’t be found in the average grocery store.

This box is laughably awful. Maybe, maybe if there was an additional item in here it would be worth it. I cannot imagine who this appeals to as it is so over-priced and such a strange niche.

Teá

I can’t imagine this subscription will last. 60 dollars up front for OREOS???? Even if they have a “collectors item”, I’m not sure anyone is a collector of oreo related items. Or if they exist, I’m sure it is a very small community. Otherwise, 60 dollars at walmart is getting you a lot more oreos than that.

No special flavors? Boo to the Oreo! This is not turning out to be something I want to subscribe to.

Reply ButtonReply

Veronica

The only way this box would be worth while at this price for me is if they were to send me exclusive flavors to this box that i can’t get in stores, or flavors that are exclusive to other countries. (Since the shipping cost to get will make them more valuable)

Other than that this is just a one time novelty I may get for a friend who loves Oreos.

I wanted to get this sub for my BF for his birthday, but it’s soooooo disappointing looking.

Wow. I was not at all impressed with the value in the first box but at least you got some fun flavors. I would have been downright pissed to get this box…just wow…
