Takeout Kit December 2017 Review

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - recipe

Takeout Kit‘s menu assortment is quite extensive. Currently, you can choose from 10 offerings. This month, I received Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup. You can read a bit of history on each takeout meal along with the region in which it originated on the info card provided.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - recipe

On the flip side of your info card, you’ll find your recipe along with a visual guide to what supplies you’ll need (pots, pans, etc.).

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Serves: 4

Here are the ingredients:

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - rice stick pho noodles

Sunlee Rice Stick, 14 oz  – Retail Value $1.99

Thin rice noodles surrounded in flavorful broth make up the bulk of this dish.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - spices and sauces

The box comes with a cardboard takeout container (love them tie-in to the takeout-at-home theme!) full of hoisin sauce, sriracha, lime juice, and rock sugar to season the broth.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - fish sauce

100% Pure Extra Virgin Fish Sauce

A staple in Vietnamese cuisine, fish sauce is a condiment made from fermented fish and salt. Vegetarians can omit this ingredient from the broth. Since my husband is vegetarian, and I consider myself to be pescatarian, I added some fish sauce to my bowl at the end instead of incorporating it into the larger pot.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - tofu

Roland Tofu, 19 oz – Retail Value $3.59 (found here for $3.23)

I’m very familiar with cooking with tofu, though I’ve never used this brand. I’ve also never seen tofu in a can!

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - broth seasoning

Herb Blend, Whole Spice Sachet, and Pho Broth Concentrate

These fragrant seasoning packets come in a small baggie to give the broth its signature flavor.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - dried mushrooms

Sliced Mushrooms

These dried mushrooms will rehydrate once added to the hot broth.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - chopping tofu

First up, mix the lime juice packets with water and slice your tofu into pieces. The tofu is firm but still soft enough that it breaks apart a bit when cut.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - spices

The spices are then toasted to release their fragrance and flavor. Once cooled, I placed them in the small mesh bag that comes with the box.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - activate spices

I gave it a few pounds with the end of a spoon to open up the spices.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - simmering broth

10 cups of water are mixed with the pho broth concentrate and brought to a boil. This makes a lot of soup! The satchel of toasted whole spices is added, and a separate pot of 5 cups of boiling water is combined with the rock sugar, lime juice, tofu, and mushrooms. This is where you can also add your fish sauce, but I opted for adding it to my serving bowl only. You may also add a different protein instead of the tofu — thinly sliced beef, shredded chicken, and shrimp are all popular choices.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - cooking noodles

The rice noodles were super easy to prepare! Just soak them in hot water for 6-7 minutes. Tip: after you run them under cool water, add a little oil and toss to prevent them from sticking together.

Takeout Kit December 2017 - vietnamese pho - final bowl

Finally, compose your bowl! The rice noodles went in the bottom (and make sure you use a large bowl!), ladle the broth on top, and add sriracha, hoisin sauce, herb blend, lime juice, and fish sauce to customize. The resulting dish was super flavorful and absolutely hit the spot on a frigid winter evening.

Verdict: There’s so much to love about Takeout Kit. First off, it’s amazing that they offer such a wide variety of dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world. It’s really fun to explore preparing the unique meals that I love but have never navigated preparing on my own. It’s also awesome that the ingredients have a two-month shelf life, so you can save the kit for the right day. This is different from other meal subscription services that contain lots of fresh produce — I often feel rushed to prepare them by their expiration date.

These kits would be terrific for parents, someone with a busy lifestyle, or even for a student who wants easy and exciting dishes on hand.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Yes! Buy it here as a one-time box for $32.00 to add your own protein or $35.00 with tofu included.

Coupon – Use code ADDICTION to save 15% off your first subscription box!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $32.00 a month, including free shipping. This month’s box arrived with everything that I needed to cook the featured meal, right down to the olive oil! The serving size for this dish was for four people, which averages out to $8 per person. To eat this meal at a restaurant, you would be spending a lot more per person. I think that the value is absolutely worth it for this delicious Takeout Kit dish!

  1. Takeout Kit can be expensive but if you live in an area where the ingredients are not available locally it’s not really that bad. Plus, it’s fun to learn a new recipe and Takeout Kit can make anyone look like a chef. Trust me.

  2. I don’t understand the value in this at all,and I am confused, is it $32 or $28? Either way for that amount I could order takeout delivered and have enough food to eat for a week.

    • Hi, Michelle! Apologies for the confusion – the subscription cost is $32 a month + free shipping. If you chose this particular recipe as a one-time kit, it would cost $35 for the tofu option or $32 for another protein of your choice. Either option includes free shipping! – Sara

  3. Found a few typos:

“I gave it a full pounds with the end of a spoon to open up the spices”. Should be few pounds.

“ladle the brother on top”. Should be ladle the broth.

“so you can save the kit the right day.” Should be save the kit FOR the right day.

    • “and a separate put of 5 cups of boiling water” – I’m assuming this meant “separate pot” but who knows.

Yes, the typos/mistakes throughout this review were extremely distracting to me as well.

      • Our apologies, but thank you for catching! The review has been updated 🙂 – Sara

      • Thanks for catching these errors! Yikes. I’ll be more careful with my words next time around. 🙂

  4. What perfect timing on this review – I was just thinking this morning it was time to sign up for this one! As a city dweller who walks to the grocery store, this current arctic blast has made meal planning quite difficult!! A few meals like this in the cupboard will make my life so much easier when the temp is sub-zero (and cheaper than Uber Eats – which I try to limit as I do enjoy cooking).

  5. In my opinion I find it a bit expensive, because I can go to my grocery store and get ingredients at a cheaper price and it will yield the same amount of food.

I think for food reviews it will be more helpful to compare the “boxes” “kits” to groceries instead of restaurants. I hardly go out to eat because I cook my meals, so this sub for me right out the bat is a no no

    • Agreed! Way too expensive for me, too! If I still have to cook this at home, then it can’t possibly be compared to take-out or going to a restaurant. The whole point of going out is so you DON’T have to cook.
And I’m confused about the cost. In the beginning the box is $32/month, then at the end that is the price without protein, $35 with protein, but then in the breakdown it is only $25/month.

      • That got me cofused too, so it must be a typo.

        • Apologies for the confusion – the subscription cost is $32 a month + free shipping. If you chose this particular recipe as a one-time kit, it would cost $35 for the tofu option or $32 for another protein of your choice. Either option includes free shipping! The review has been updated. – Sara
