Love With Food Deluxe Box January 2018 "Rise" Review
Usually, the theme from the information card doesn’t have much to do with the box. This month, there was just the word “Rise.” So, let’s just move on and talk about the snacks:
The box came with this information card. I miss the old information cards that said more about the snacks.
There are usually some coupons with this subscription. This month, there were deals for a few other food- and beverage-related subscriptions.
Purell Multi-Surface Disinfectant (2 fl oz) – Buy 2, 28 fl oz Bottles for $10.39
Every once in awhile, you’ll get a beauty or home-related promotional sample in Love with Food. This month, it was some Purell disinfectant. I tried this on the kitchen counter near where I prepare Mr. Kitty’s wet food puree, but this is one of those items where you can’t really assess how well it works without access to a microbiology lab!
That’s It “Zesty” Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $18.99
I’ve received quite a few That’s It bars in food subscription boxes before. They have really simple ingredients (in this case, apples and cinnamon), so these are vegan and also good for people with various allergies (though always read product information if you have any doubts). If you want to try just one before committing to a whole box, I have seen these in Target in the checkout line.
Tom and Jenny’s Chocolate Caramels (3 count) – Buy a 2.9 oz Bag for $5.99
There are usually some little candies in Love with Food. This month, it was these guys. These were not labeled at all (other than with a brand) but I am pretty sure I have figured out what they are. Tom and Jenny’s candies are low in sugar (they have a lot of sugar alcohols) so each of these is just 20 calories. (They have dairy.) I am a fan, although these did totally get stuck between my teeth.
Buff Bake Chocolate Chip Protein Peanut Spread (1.34 oz) – Buy a 13 oz Jar for $9.49
This is another product I’ve had quite a few times from food and fitness subscription boxes. I am a fan of the product – I think this works better, texture-wise, than other protein-enhanced peanut butters – but I don’t really like getting nut butters in pouches and foil packets as I feel like it is quite difficult to get all the product out.
Dick and Jane’s Educational Snacks Food and Nutrition (1 oz) – Buy 120, 0.88 oz Bags for $48.29
Love with Food has sent these out in other styles before. They are really plain vanilla cookies (nut free, for what it’s worth) that I can’t get too excited about. I think it is hilarious that a snack meant for a child would say “Vitamin E is an Antioxidant” as I’m not sure I understood the implications of that statement until partway through my second bachelor’s degree (which was a double major in biology and chemistry).
Dick and Jane’s Educational Snacks Fun and Fitness (1 oz) – Buy 120, 0.99 oz Bags for $48.29
These taste the same as the others. This design is new and not available yet, so I’ve linked to another style of cookies from the same company. I will say, the pictures and words are easier to interpret now than they were with the “Presidents” cookies from last year.
Pure Leaf Iced Black Tea with Peach (1 bag) – Buy 16 Bags for $3.99
These are new to me. You brew them as if they were hot tea but then pour ice in. I like the idea behind this, though I tend to prefer non-flavored (plain) iced teas. The peach was OK here because I removed the bag fairly soon (peach in tea is a funny thing for me, if it is too strong I don’t like it at all), but that made the tea kind of weak. If this company has a plain black iced tea, though, I would definitely buy some and take it to work with me.
Pure Leaf Iced Green Tea with Citrus (2 bags) – Buy 16 Bags for $3.99
I like the *idea* of green tea with citrus, but this has lemongrass in it. Lemongrass is not citrus. It is not even closely related at all. (To be fair, there is some “real” citrus in here as well.) I find that the more often I encounter lemongrass in tea and food products, the less I like it. I gave this a fair shot but the lemongrass ended up ruining it for me. (On the other hand, if you like lemongrass, go for it!)
Belgian Boys Mini Choco Stroopwafel (2 count) – Buy a 14 Count Bag for $4.99
Belgian Boys stroopwafels appear fairly regularly in Love with Food, although I don’t think this exact kind has shown up before. I will never complain about stroopwafels (as long as they are vegetarian, which these are). I would implore companies providing samples to be sure to include nutrition information on the sample packets, though. I had to go look up the calories in these before eating them. The chocolate coating is a nice touch.
Janis and Melanie Original Cheese Straws (1.5 oz) – Retail Value $2.10
We got some of these about a year ago in Love with Food. Back when you could still actually get a variety of items in the Love with Food shop using points because I remember redeeming a whole bunch of points on these and some other Janis and Melanie items. So, even though these are a repeat, I like them a lot (because CHEESE) and was happy to see them again. I should really just go place an order – the little cookies from Janis and Melanie are delicious as well.
Love Corn Smoked BBQ (0.7 oz) – Buy 10, 1.6 oz Bags for $15.99
The flavor dusting on the outside of these was delicious and salty. I’m less enthusiastic about the starchy main part because there was an undertaste that was a little weird to me. I was pleasantly surprised by the texture; I thought these would be super hard (they’re dry, roasted corn kernels) but they were actually easy to chew.
Made Good Chocolate Chip Granola Minis (0.85 oz) – Buy 6 Boxes of 4 Packs Each for $32.41
These were pretty much what you would expect from a chocolate chip granola product. (The oats are gluten-free if that is of concern to you.) I find the “contains vegetables” language to be a bit deceptive because what this actually has is a vegetable extract powder at the tail end of the ingredients list, which means there just isn’t much of it in there. (Granted, granola bites that tasted like vegetables would be unpleasant.) Eat this as a relatively low-sugar, low-fat granola product and not as a source of vegetables and you’ll be fine.
Emily’s Trail Mix (0.85 oz) – Buy 24 Packages for $22.99
This also has cashews, which I totally didn’t notice at first because there were only 3.5 of them in the pouch. Although the nuts are allegedly roasted and salted, to me, they have that “raw” texture and the salt must be pretty light. Overall, a decent trail mix, but probably not something I would seek out on its own. (I have seen this in food boxes before.)
Hippeas in Vegan White Cheddar (4 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $38.45
I have received these in several food subscription boxes in the last year (I can’t specifically remember if Love with Food was one of them). The texture is rather like a Snapea Crisp (something extruded and puffed but with a beany base). The “vegan white cheddar” flavor is not my favorite. It is OK, but it tastes nothing like cheese (which is true for pretty much all the vegan “cheese” substitutes I’ve tried). I like the fajita ones a lot better.
Route 11 Potato Chips in Dill Pickle (1 oz x 2) – Buy 30, 2 oz Bags for $35
We’ve had this exact item from Love with Food in the past. I do like them, though. These are milder than your typical salt and vinegar chips, kind of like what you might get if you crossed sour cream and onion with salt and vinegar (these do have some dairy in them). I don’t let myself eat potato chips often so these were a treat.
Verdict: There were 15 items in the January 2018 Love with Food Deluxe Box, which works out to about $1.33 per item. (I am counting the two bags of potato chips separately, the three little caramels together, and the Purell not at all, since it is not a snack but a promotional sample.) That is about average for Love with Food. The Hippeas bag was generously-sized, though many of the other items were pretty small. I think I’d like to see slightly larger sizes, or a few more doubles of items (like with the chips) or maybe a pantry item or two to really round out the value.
It was nice that everything was vegetarian, but I feel like there were a ton of repeats, which has been a little bit of a problem lately.
