Kira Kira Crate December 2017 Review

Kira Kira Crate always comes with a booklet that describes each item and how to use it which is super helpful since some of the items don't have English directions. There's also always a short makeup tutorial and snapshots customers took and used the hashtag #kirakiracrate to share on social media.

Hello Kitty Lip Balm

The package of this tube of pink lip products says "lipstick" on it, but I would say is more of a lip balm in reality. Nothing too special here. The tube has a cute Hello Kitty with coffee and pastries motif, and the lip balm has a strawberry scent that reminds me of my childhood. There is barely any pigment which further points to "balm" and even though it feels really moisturizing when applied, I get the feeling it won't really last.

Malibu Beauty Eyeshadow in Pink Glitter

Eyeshadow is a makeup item that sort of eludes me in terms of excitement. I think it's mainly because I don't know the ultimate way to apply without looking like a 10 yr old. I really need to watch some YouTube videos to get myself up to speed. Even if I wore eyeshadow, I'm not sure I would personally choose a glittery pink color unless it was for more of a costumey situation. The pigment here is pretty decent despite its pale hue and it gives a nice coverage.

As you can see in this swatch, the lip balm is ever so subtly tinted and the eyeshadow is quite glittery.

Kawaii Mask

It seems weird to say, but I haven't used a sheet mask in quite a while, so this is a treat. This floral scented one contains Rose Placenta Extract which helps moisturize your skin. The mask is made of 100% cotton and was heavily soaked in essence, although it wasn't drippy which I appreciated. Like almost all sheet masks, though it says it has a scent, it usually just kind of smells like hand sanitizer more than anything. After 10 minutes, I removed it to discover that my skin was not super pleased. It left me pretty red-faced but didn't cause any discomfort. I smoothed around the extra essence and allowed it to soak in over the next 15 mins or so. My skin calmed down and actually does feel quite soft now.

Peeling Good! Facial Cleanser

I remember this same product from one of Sarah's past reviews of another Asian beauty box although I had never used it myself. The name "peeling good!" makes one assume this is a peeling mask that you would apply with the oversized black cotton swabs, but alas, it is only a cleanser. The cleanser comes in a cool test tube looking bottle that you dip one of the six cotton swabs in for each application. I followed the illustration directions from the back of the package on how to sweep the cleanser onto my face and gave it a few minutes before washing it off. Again, I was hoping for some peeling action though it doesn't actually instruct you to do so. However, out of curiosity, I did sort of rub my face a bit and it did start to roll up in little chunks before I just rinsed it off. It had a very vague lemon scent and actually did leave my face feeling squeaky clean!

Jewelry Aroma Bubble Bath in Emerald

This bubble bath looks like matcha powder but sadly is not. It has a nondescript "bubble bath smell" to me. Maybe slightly floral and soapy? Hahaha. Upon mixing with water, it, of course, creates bubbles like it should and makes the bathwater a cloudy leafy green. It immediately felt moisturizing against my skin, as if I was sitting in a really liquidly lotion. Afterwards, my body was nice and soft with a light floral scent.

Hello Kitty Travel Toothbrush Set

There has been a real influx of toothbrushes and kinds of toothpaste in my life lately, unrelated to subscription boxes. This Hello Kitty set is perfect for travel although I personally feel to have grown tired of some of her pink themes. These days I prefer a more minimal design to my belongings, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the cuteness of this set. The plastic cup with lid serves as a rinsing cup after brushing as well as a way of keeping the collapsable toothbrush and travel toothpaste together.

Verdict: This month's Kira Kira Crate didn't really wow me. I probably liked the Peeling Good cleanser and sheet mask the best out of everything. The makeup was kind of ho-hum for me and the Hello Kitty toothbrush set just wasn't anything that I'd write home about. The cost of the box is $29 and I received six things that none of which really struck me as a big ticket item.

From an American living in Japan: sparkly pink seems to be the default eye shadow color here. It’s what everyone always seems to be wearing. I haven’t actually tried to buy eye shadow here, but I imagine that, if I did, it would just be one long row of slightly different shades of sparkly light pink.
