FitSnack Box January 2018 Review

This box usually contains some ready-to-eat snacks and a few pantry items:

On one side of the information card was details about some of this month’s items, and the other side included a workout.

There are also usually some coupons and/or product literature.

Full Green Cauli Rice with Broccoli

Full Green Cauli Rice with Broccoli (7.05 oz) – Retail Value $3.69

This item is currently undergoing rebranding and doesn’t have an active website, so I am having a hard time finding information about it. (This is the new packaging, this isn’t an old item.) This product is mostly cauliflower with a little broccoli, all cut into the rough shape of cooked grains of rice. It is meant to be used as a rice substitute. You just take it out of the bag and microwave it for a few minutes. I did not honestly have high hopes for this, but I ended up liking it. I just put a little soy sauce on it but it would certainly work in a lot of the same applications as rice would typically be used (not risotto, though). It does have a STRONG cruciferous vegetable smell, though. The whole bag is only 50 calories.

Honey Bunchies Gourmet Honey Bar

Honey Bunchies Gourmet Honey Bar (1.9 oz) – Buy 10 bars for $28.80, on sale for $27.99

This is a new brand for me. Although it has peanuts, pecans, and sunflower kernels, the sunflower kernels are most evident to me in terms of both flavor and appearance. This also has milk, butter, and honey, so definitely not a vegan item here. But it is pretty good and if you need some sugar for quick energy as well as a little protein and fat for sustained energy, this would definitely work.

CrunchLina Spirulina Snack Clusters

CrunchLina Spirulina Snack Clusters (2 oz) – Buy a 4 oz bag for $8

This is mostly nuts and raisins with a little cinnamon (barely evident) and flaxseed. And of course, a thick coating of spirulina algae. One thing I have found to be true about snacks containing spirulina is that they look awful to me (that color of green is not appealing), but really they’re not bad. There wasn’t an algae taste or smell to me, this was basically just a trail mix once you got past the appearance. I found the price reasonable for a snack like this too – nuts are expensive and when you start adding semi-rare ingredients like spirulina, the price often rockets up.

Oats Overnight in Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana

Oats Overnight in Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana (3 oz) – Buy 3 bags and a shaker bottle for $18

This brand is clearly doing heavy promotion right now as this is the third package of this product I’ve received in January. The idea here is you mix this with milk the day before (no point in doing non-dairy milk as this already contains whey and is super high in calories) and leave it in the refrigerator overnight. Then you have breakfast to go. I don’t really like the idea of drinking oatmeal from a shaker cup so I used hot water and cooked this as I normally would for packaged oatmeal, and that works too, though I could only eat about half due to the calories (310 as packaged, whereas my usual product is about 150).

RxBar in Chocolate Sea Salt

RxBar in Chocolate Sea Salt (1.83 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $25.99, on sale for $22.09

These will be familiar to many people from other food and fitness subscription boxes. I haven’t been the biggest fan of these in the past, as some of the ones I got were too chewy, but this one had a nice texture. Plus, it smelled like a brownie, which is always a plus.

Pizza Thinables (6 oz)

Pizza Thinables (6 oz) – Retail Value $3.09

This was another great find.  I have had cookies from this brand before, but these crackers are new to me. I liked them a lot, and it felt like you got to eat a whole bunch of them for only 60 calories. They are super high in fiber (like 44% of what you need in a day in one serving) so do drink a lot of water and don’t eat the whole bag in one sitting and you will be fine.

Grape Tickle Water (8 fl oz)

Grape Tickle Water (8 fl oz) – Buy 12 cans for $15

This is sparkling water. We’ve received it from FitSnack Box before (in a different flavor). I’ll be honest, grape is not my favorite, but that is a totally personal preference. If you like the flavor of Concord grapes, you should like this. Also, this one still had plenty of carbonation and was packaged with some foam so it didn’t smash anything else too badly.

Verdict: The December FitSnack Box had 7 items, which makes the average cost per item about $3.70 (figuring a $25.90 cost for the box + shipping). Several of the items have values higher than that, so this was a reasonable deal. I could have everything this month (I’m vegetarian) and there was no coffee-flavored anything, so that was a bonus for a coffee-hater like myself. I am personally happy with this box because I discovered a few things that were totally new to me (Thinables crackers, Cauli Rice, Honey Bunchies bar, etc.) and everything seemed fresh this time around, as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Boxes ship out around the 20th of the month so it is you will receive the February box.

Coupon - Use this link to get a $10 bonus snack pack with any 3, 6, or 12-month subscription!

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $19.90 + $6 shipping, which means that each of the 7 items in the box has an average cost of $3.70.

The pizza crackers sound great.

I really like them. They’re a bit hard to find online outside of the manufacturer’s site (which has $$$ shipping) but I am thinking of ordering a couple of bags so I have something to snack on that doesn’t have a ton of calories. They have some other flavors that sound good, too.

From past experience with Thinables products, either only eat one serving or drink A LOT of water with them, though.
