Love With Food Deluxe Box December 2017 Review
The box came with this information card. I miss the old information cards that said more about the snacks. Especially now that Love with Food has gone and changed their website to where it is really hard to find items they don’t happen to have in stock in their shop.
There are usually some coupons with this subscription. The amount of paper in this particular box was over the top, with coupons, deals on several unrelated subscriptions, and even an offer to buy glasses online…
Beanitos Black Bean Chips (1.2 oz) – Buy 6 oz for $2.67
It is not exactly unusual to find Beanitos in a subscription box! But, I do like them – I find they do a good job of mimicking the texture of a standard tortilla chip despite having significantly different ingredients (beans and rice, in this case). This variety is pretty neutral and benefits from a dip or spread.
Blue Diamond Mini Nut-Thins in “Hint of Sea Salt” (0.74 oz) – Buy 4.4 oz for $4.99
This is another item with which I am familiar; my husband buys cheese-flavored Blue Diamond nut thins every couple of weeks to take with his lunch. These have a crispy texture and a neutral flavor (and they’re gluten-free, if that is of concern to you).
Candy Canes (large, 2) – Buy a Pack of 10 for $10.99
These have no brand information on them (though they are individually wrapped in plastic). Amazingly, they were not broken! These have a standard peppermint flavor.
Dolcetto Wafer Rolls (chocolate, 0.53 oz) – Buy 36 oz for $21.95
We’ve received mini Dolcetto rolls in the past from Love with Food and these are quite similar. I think the manufacturer could stand to work on the appearance a bit, as they look like small cardboard tubes, but the outer shell is nicely crispy (but not hard) and the inner chocolate filling is pretty good.
Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola in Cranberry Almond Maple (1.1 oz) – Retail Value $1.29
This is another product I’m familiar with. I would use the term “granola” loosely, as this product really doesn’t have anything in common with granola. It is more like a boxed cereal in terms of flavor and texture (not that that’s a bad thing). The cranberries are few and far between.
Munk Pack Protein Cookie in Double Dark Chocolate (2.96 oz) – Buy 6 Cookies for $16.79
These have been making the rounds in subscription boxes lately. I think this is my second this month (they’re vegan, so they appear in vegan subscription boxes, and because they have added protein, they appear in fitness subscription boxes too). Other than the fact that they are really high in calories (360 per cookie, each of which counts as TWO servings), they are tasty and also very soft without being crumbly. I think double dark chocolate might be my favorite flavor yet.
Nothing but the Fruit in Mixed Berry (0.9 oz) – Buy 8 Pouches for $25.76
And another product I’ve tried before. I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, it is a vegetarian fruit snack, which I appreciate (no gelatin – it’s thickened with pectin). It’s not too sticky, though I kind of wish there were larger pieces. I Just find tiny pieces difficult to eat. The other thing is, these actually have quite long ingredients lists that start with “apple puree,” which I find to be deceptive. Yes, it is a fruit ingredient, and it is probably necessary for the texture, but when the bulk of the snack is not made from the fruit listed on the front of the package (mixed berries, in this case), “nothing but the fruit” is a misleading name, in my opinion. Then again, nearly every kind of juice mix at the supermarket does the same thing (adds white grape juice or apple juice to blends with pineapple in the name, etc.).
Nothing but the Fruit in Strawberry (0.9 oz) – Buy 8 Pouches for $26.45
This is pretty similar to the mixed berry flavor. I honestly have a difficult time telling them apart. (I put some of each out on a plate, which is my typical way of sampling snacks.)
Pop Art Thai Coconut Curry Gourmet Popcorn (1.25 oz) – Buy 5 oz for $4.09
This is also a product with which I’m familiar. I like it though. The flavor is a little more “curry” and a little less “coconut” to me, but both are apparent. There was kind of a lot of small pieces, but very few hard kernels. Please note one bag contains more than a single serving.
Fruigees 24 Carrot Orange (3.5 oz) – Buy 12 pouches for $19.99
Oh, pouch snacks. (Yes, I’ve also had this one before.) I practically lived off them for a few weeks during the summer after I had gum graft surgery (though I had to squeeze them into bowls and eat them with spoons). I kind of don’t want to see one ever again after that. This one tastes more like orange than carrot, which is a good thing. It is pretty sugary so it’s not really quite the same as eating your vegetables.
RxBar Kids in Apple Cinnamon Raisin (1.16 oz) – Buy 16 Bars for $24.99
This was new to me. I have had RxBars before, but not from the kids’ product line (there are usually a few snacks for kids in Love with Food). My husband and I thought the flavors were kid-appropriate but we weren’t sure the texture would appeal to children. But then again, we are both 40 and childfree, so we may not be the best judges of what kids would and wouldn’t like. These stuck to our teeth in a major way. (I wonder if it is the egg protein that makes them so chewy?) The cinnamon was pretty strong here.
RxBar Kids in Berry Blast (1.16 oz) – Buy 16 Bars for $24.99
This was very similar to the apple cinnamon raisin one in terms of texture and appearance, but the berry flavor was definitely distinguishable from the apple.
Sun Butter (creamy, 1.1 oz) – Buy 16 oz for $5.99
I am a fan of peanut butter and this does not taste the same (it’s not bad, just a little different), though it does have an appealing texture. This would be good for someone with a peanut allergy or perhaps a parent to buy for a kid who goes to a peanut-free school. (It has some added sugar so it’s not something I would regularly buy.)
Vegan Rob’s Wild Rice Chips (1.5 oz) – Buy 24 Bags for $42
Vegan Rob’s has some interesting products (including chip-like snacks with cauliflower and such in them) so these were pretty tame by comparison. They are not the most substantial of chips but they have a very neutral flavor and would probably be better with a dip or spread, as long as you choose something on the thin side that wouldn’t weigh down and break the chips.
Verdict: There were 15 items in the December 2017 Love with Food Deluxe Box, which works out to about $1.33 per item. (I am counting the candy canes separately since they are large.) That is about average for Love with Food. The RxBars, Nothing but the Fruit Snacks, and Fruigees pouch all go for over $1 each (and even up to $3), so there were some more expensive items in the box to help average out the value.
Everything was vegetarian this month, which was nice, but this was also a missed opportunity for them to send more chocolate – this is one of the only months out of the whole year it wouldn’t melt in my mailbox and there was barely any chocolate in the box. There was an unusual emphasis on sugar-laden, fruit-flavored snacks, as well, and there were a LOT of repeat items. I wouldn’t call it a bad box – overall variety was decent and the brands were generally good – but it wasn’t my personal favorite box from Love with Food ever, either.
