Dollar Bead Bag December 2017 Review

dollar bead bag info card for the month

The bag included a list of items in the bag.

A note on prices: Items like this can come from a variety of different suppliers at many price points depending on how many you buy, etc.  I couldn’t find a lot of these exact beads from common sources (e.g., Fire Mountain Gems) and it’s of questionable value to pick something similar because a slight difference in grading or size or material and you are looking at half or double the price (or an even greater difference).  Even different colors of the same size and shape of glass beads are priced differently due to materials needed to make the colors!

four strands of small beads

3 mm Czech Firepolished Beads in (from top to bottom): Matte Crystal, Chartreuse Nebulous Luster, Northern Lights, and Matte Warm Copper

This is a great set of colors for me. Matte crystal can be used with so many other colors and the same for the matte warm copper, especially with the color palette I’ve been into lately. For that matter, chartreuse nebulous luster fits right in. And the finish on Northern lights appeals to me. I recently reorganized my stash by color so it will be easy to find coordinating beads.

four strands of colorful beads

4 mm Czech Firepolished Beads in (from top to bottom): Northern Lights, Matte Vintage Bronze, Green Turquoise Nebulous Luster, and Metallic Rhubarb

It is nice to get Northern lights in two sizes as some patterns call for both 3mm and 4mm beads. Matte vintage bronze will go with a lot of other colors, green turquoise nebulous luster also fits well into my current color palette, and it will be fun to make something with metallic rhubarb.

double stranded necklace made with dollar bead box beads

Here is a necklace I made with some of the 4mm beads and a pendant and findings I already had. I’d been doing a lot of bead-weaving projects for this box lately and I wanted to try something else for a change. I have a couple of dresses I can wear this with.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the December 2017 Dollar Bead Bag, for reasons explained above. This is one of those subscriptions where you know in advance what you are going to get each month (only the color is a surprise). It works out to $1 per strand, and I think that is reasonable. These strands are a little shorter than what you’d get at Fire Mountain Gems, for example, but the prices are also lower. This is a good subscription if you are looking to build your stash.

Please note that no directions are given and you have to supply your own needles, stringing materials, tools, and findings.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but if there is a color that appeals to you, if you become a Dollar Bead Bag member, you can order items from the past two Dollar Bead Bags from the Dollar Bead Box shop for $1 each (plus shipping).

Value Breakdown: At $8.00 for this subscription, you are paying $1 per strand.

  1. So creative! I love seeing your designs!

  2. That is so awesome, I just organized my beads by color and size about 4-5 months ago. It’s so much nicer having them this way! Love all the reviews you do!

    • My next project is organizing my findings by color (silver, antiqued silver, goldtone including bright brass, antiqued brass/bronze, copper, antiqued copper, rose gold, black brass, and then there are anodized titanium, niobium, and aluminum in bright colors though those last three are not very numerous). I have had this thing for brass flowers lately that I can’t quite explain…

I need to buy some more organizers first, though.
