The Subscription Box: BoxyCharm

The Cost: $21 a month

The Products: 5-6 beauty items that will include nail care, skin care, makeup, haircare, fragrance and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized).

Ships to: US and Canada

Check out all of my BoxyCharm reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included.

Now, time for the items!

Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara – Value $23

(All subscribers will receive this item.)

My all-time favorite mascara is tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes, so I was excited to try this formula! In general, I’m very impressed. I’d say it’s on par with Lights, Camera, Lashes, in terms of length and volume. Personally, I prefer a soft bristle mascara brush over a hard plastic one, so that’s the only reason I still prefer the Lights, Camera, Lashes.

Beaute Basics Bronze Essentials – Value $39.95

(This is a variant item. Subscribers may receive a different item instead.)

This bronzer features two matte shades (outer and center) and a super shimmery option as well:

This shimmer shade has some fall out, but in general, these are all well-pigmented. (Swatched in lower photo.)

Real Her Blush Kit – Value $32

(All subscribers will receive this item.)

This blush kit features pink, peach, and bronze shades:

Each color is pretty shimmery, so a little goes a long way with these. They were easy to blend, too. (Swatched in lower photo.)

Pretty Vulgar My Lips Are Sealed Liquid Lipstick in 108 Particularly Sophisticated Value – $24

(All subscribers will receive this liquid lipstick or Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stain)

This formula has a metallic glossy finish – it is gorgeous! It’s not a long lasting like a matte liquid lipstick, so you’ll have to retouch throughout the day, but I think it’s worth it!

Here it is swatched beneath the bronzer and the blush palette:

(Bronzer, Blush Kit, Liquid Lip)

Crown WH035 PRO BLUSH BRUSH – Value $12

(This is a variant item. Subscribers may receive a different item instead.)

This is a densely packed brush with not a ton of give, so it’s great for precision application.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $131! As always, the value for Boxycharm is amazing! All the items are a win for me this month, too: I can always use more blush and bronzer, I’ve been wanting to try this new tarte mascara, the metallic liquid lip is new to me and I like, and I makeup brushes are always a good thing!

I think Boxycharm is a perfect subscription for people who love makeup. You’re going to get a lot of palettes, highlighters, etc., so it’s great if you want to build your collection and try all the things! (If you only need one highlighter/palette in your makeup arsenal, this might not be the best box for you.)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Possibly. Boxycharm is in waitlist mode, so I recommend signing up ASAP. They’ll email you when your first box ships, so you’ll know which box you’ll be getting as your first month.

Coupon – No coupons at this time.

Value Breakdown: At $21 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Mascara: $3.69
  • Bronzer: $6.41
  • Blush Kit: $5.13
  • Liquid Lip: $3.85
  • Brush: $1.92

  1. I finally used the mascara for the first time, and I don’t know if the problem is me and my technique, but I think this mascara is horrible. The barrel is super-thick and difficult to maneuver, and I don’t understand the point, on this log of a barrel, of the short, tiny, barely there bristles. Didn’t do anything for me.

    • Forgot to add: applying two coats of this without clumping and achieving “spider” lashes turned out to be impossible.

  2. Finally got my box. Got the color corrector so yay! Blush went in the donation box so hopefully it will go to someone that will love it.

  3. I received this box and would love to swap my bronzer for the highlighter. Just in case anyone out there is interested 🙂 I have the bronzer listed on the swap board.

  4. I received my box yesterday and cannot be more thrilled! I got box variation 1 (as pictured above), and I love all the products! The liquid lip is nothing like I have ever had, it looks so cool with the metallic pinkish color. I am very fair skinned, super light blond hair and light blue/grey/green eyes and all the products compliment me great. So so glad I didn’t get that baby poop brown colored lipstick!

  5. I received my box on December 16. I received the box with the color correcting palette. To be honest I have no skin issue’s even though I am 54. I have kept a great skincare regimen most of my life and it has paid off, so I was not overly excited about the palette. The mascara I used it and put the lid of it and the product all overflowed onto the mascara container. I kept having to wipe it off. I was impressed with the product overall though my lashes looked very full. I do not have much in the way of lashes any longer, so this was a win for me. The brush, I have tons I love brushes, can never get enough. The blush Palette I was not impressed at all pigment was not great and the product did not want to cling to my brush.
Now why I think this box is so great is the lippie I just found my number one favorite lippie of all time I got the Pretty Vulgar in willow. It had just the right amount of shine. It is not sticky, and the color is perfect for me. I will purchase this product over and over.
For me this box was a win, anytime I find a favorite product it makes the box a great one!

  6. Anyone just dying to get the color correcting palette and willing to trade? Mine is still unopened and wrapped in the original plastic. Was really disappointed that I got this product.

  7. The lippie shade looks a bit like Secret Sabotage to me! Am I the only one? The Particularly Sophisticated shade looks a lot brighter on the website! Hmmm, it may just be the lighting.
    :’3

  8. I received this box as well. I am thrilled to have the rosy Pretty Vulgar lippie and the brush. I wanted the corrector palette, and today found someone who is swapping theirs for my bronzer palette. Win!

  9. My poor box has been sitting in the warehouse for 7 days. No movement until today.
    I’m pretty sad.

  10. Strange my tracking states that my delivery date is today 12/14 but according to USPS they’re still waiting for the package. I hope it didn’t get lost in transit. This is the first time I’ve seen this happen with the tracking. Anyone else have this happen to them?

    • Me, Here, Me…It’s happening to me for the first time. Somethings going on. Maybe they are sending boxes out in bunches every 7 days because of the cost? I just know I’ve been trying to track it all week and it just sat with no movement and then all of a sudden today they picked it up. Go figure.

    • Happens to me all the time. Sometimes it sits in the same place for a week like my glossybox that was supposed to be delivered yesterday but probably won’t be here for another week.

      • That happens with my Lola box…I didn’t get November’s box until the first week of this month…both my Lola and Boxycharm boxes have sat in warehouses for up to ten days before finally being shipped to me. It’s frustrating, especially since I use some of the products as stocking stuffers for family.

  11. Whew, does anyone have a suggestion to tame this wild brown lipstick? I look like I’m strait out of the eighties sporting this metallic color. Is there a trick to make it less 1984 motley crew?

    • Yes . I out a little bit I center of lip over last month dark wibe shade. Gorgeous! Plus I am still swooning for losing dark circles with color corrector… now need waterproof concealer

    • Mix it with a nice pink

    • Oh, man I love that wild brown color but I am 54 and love still rocking the 80’s 🙂

    • Metallics are super in right now.
Anything sparkly that changes color depending on the light – duochrome, prismatic, holographic – haven’t you noticed?

  12. This month was disappointing because both the color corrector and the blush were made in China – and (as I know people are sick of hearing) I don’t let my daughters wear Chinese makeup because of the danger of lead and heavy metals. Not that there isn’t a danger in other products, but it’s a bit less.

    • Why would that increase the likelihood of lead and heavy metals? Wouldn’t they just manufacture according to the brand’s formulation?

    • You know that China is pretty strict about that kind of thing, right? COUNTERFEIT items can have some unsavory ingredients in them because they’re cheap on purpose and there’s no quality control. Sure, don’t go letting your daughters buy a knock off $2 palette from ebay. But these aren’t counterfeit and brands often specifically shop for laboratories that are able to produce items with their specific formula and ingredients. It sounds like you’re basing your decisions on outdated rumors and hysteria. Chinese labs from reputable companies (especially SMALLER brands that have a lot more at stake) will be of good quality.

  13. I hope I get box variant 1!!

  14. I just got my box today and I got the color corrector , which I won’t use. I really wanted the Vintage Highlighter. I was hoping for variation 3. My box weight 0.8 lbs.

  15. I just got my box today and I got the color corrector, I won’t use it. I really wanted the vintage highlighter . My box was .8 and I was really hoping for variation 3.

  16. I got the color corrector and brown metallic lip. Really wanted pink one. Why do they keep sending me Brown? I have light blonde hair and light skin and it looks awful on me.
Not sure how to use the palette but there was a good unboxing video where she uses it and it looked pretty good.

    • I got the same box. I was really hoping for the lip color in the review, I really hate brown/nude. I’m pretty happy otherwise with the price of just the mascara covering the cost of the box

    • Oh that brown lip color – I can’t even. I can’t imagine that looking good on anyone of any skin tone. I’m so disappointed I got it.

My color correcting palette had a huge fingerprint in the green which beyond skeeved me out. I already have a color correcting palette from Smashbox that I use once in a while so I was already planning on passing that along to someone else, or the trash., if I had gotten it.

The blushes are SO chalky and powdery not to mention filled with glitter. Coming from someone who loves blush I was really disappointed with that product.

The brush and mascara are worth $21 but overall this box fell really flat for me. I was pretty disappointed with it.

      • Forgive me if you’re a visual person like me, I think the brown shade makes my lips look like a butt because of the color.
I got the Pretty Vulgar lippie and the color corrector palette.

    • Looks like crap on me, too. I have super light blond hair naturally (my eyebrows and lashes are transparent, lol) and gray/light blue/greenish blue eyes. Those brown lippies look stark in my skin tone. I don’t like the monochromatic look at all. I have way too many “nude/brown” lip products, send me some berries/reds/pinks/peachy colors!

    • I emailed them about the lip and eye-shadow colors! Too much neutral and brown!!! I’m about ready to cancel my subscription because there is not enough variety in color! I love the products I just wish they would be able to provide other color choice’s.

  17. I received my box today and I got the bronze essentials. If anyone that got the color correcting concealer and would like to swap, that would be great:)

    • Julie, I would love to swap with you!!

      • I listed it on the swap site. I checked this morning and I am the only Julie with it listed if you would like to send a request 🙂

        • what swap site are you referring to?

          • This one, MSA

    • Where is the bronze essentials made? The color corrector is made in China 🙁

  18. Has ANYONE gotten the Makeup Geek variation? That’s the one I want but every single picture I see on Instagram is one of the other two! Hoping they maybe send them out in batches and I got the last batch (wishful thinking!).

  19. I’m so disappointed. I just got my box in the mail and I opened it up to discover Beauté Basics Bronzer crushed up and a powdered mess all over everything. 😔

    • @jessica, take a picture with your phone of the label on your box with the bronzer next to the box showing the damage & email them thru the website right away. They will make it right & send out a new bronzer for you. Unfortunately you’ll have to clean up the mess though & I’m sorry sweetie, but do it right away so they can get the new one out to you asap.

    • Oh no!

    • Received my box today total mess everything has bronzer everywhere including the outside all my mail in my box had stuff all over it everything I have sent a message along with several pictures and haven’t received a reply to this issue or any of the other messages this month. Any suggestions??

  20. Hey everyone hurry the limited edition just restocked I didn’t know how else to get it out but it’s on there now I just checked. I’m not ordering it I don’t think I’d like what’s in so good luck to those who missed out and did.

    • How/Where do you find the limited addition box to buy it?

  21. I got this exact box

  22. I hope I get this variation too. I don’t use colorectors. But the bronzer is so pretty! I’m pretty much out of the Pur bronzer I got in a previous Boxycharm box…

  23. I usually have my box by now but I have yet to get it and still no tracking info. Last month I got my tracking info the day after I got my box. I have this feeling Im going to have to deal with their terrible customer service team….

    • @Candace, if you haven’t already done it, sign up for a free account on FedEx and then you can see when they print the label and the shipping progress. I almost never get a tracking email from boxy but I keep track of my FedEx account so I know when to expect it. Hope this helps you!

      • LoriD, Thank you! I never thought of that. I’m gonna do that now!

        • @Candace you’re so welcome sweetie 🤗 I’m glad to help you out! ❤️

  24. My box weighs .8 I hope it doesn’t have the Highlighter in it. I already have 2 Vintage Highlighters from previous boxes that I don’t use. This box is a total failure for me anyway so giving me a repeat product wouldn’t surprise me. After the LE Box failure and the quality of the December box I’m done I cancelled. I hope someone on the waiting list gets my spot and enjoys the products.

    • If yours weighs .8 you have the highlighter. Though I’ve heard that if you already had one from Boxy and email them they’ll send you a bonus item in your January box. Not sure how true it is, but worth a try.

    • I love the vintage duo highlighter we got. I’m actually down to the pan!!! Let me know if you’re interested in swapping or selling. Thanks

  25. Anyone who has received their box know the weight of their box? My tracking shows mine weighs 0.8

    • Mine was .7 and I got the same box as Liz, except in a nude metallic lipstick shade

    • I was worried because my tracking said my box only weighed 0.4. However, I got all my products and everything was perfect. (Mascara, blush palette, brush, pretty vulgar and bronzer palette.)

  26. I received mine today, it’s the version with the color correcting palette and the Pretty Vulgar lipstick, but it’s in an ugly brown color (105). Already passed it on to friends. I do wonder though who is using all those brown/nude tones that make most people look dead….otherwise always a fun box and even when they miss I still love them.

    • @Lavinia how much does your box weigh?

      • not op, but I got the color corrector and the pretty vulgar lip and mine weighed 0.8

      • Oh, sorry, didn’t check!

    • I got that, too! I looked on Pretty Vulgar’s site to get its info to post it for a swap and it actually called it “brown”, so they were honest! I would have loved to have received Particularly Sophisticated (the rose Gold featured here). Oh well. I have LOVED my Boxycharm sub.

    • Browns and brown-ish nudes look amazing on my light, warm undertoned skin. I know several people that love browns and nudes. Unless the nude is too light for your skin, I’d disagree that it makes you look dead. 🙂

  27. Praying to the boxy gods this is the variation I get! I’ve been excited for the blush palette since they revealed it, but your swatches make me even more excited. Tarte mascara has always been a miss for me so I’m torn in trying this one out or gifting it. Really though, I want that blush brush and hoping for this pink gloss.
I’ve been debating canceling boxy and going quarterly on ivory clasp since I own a lifetime supply of makeup, but it’s just so hard to quit 😭

  28. I’m really excited for the blush palette! I’m digging the shimmer to all the colors, certainly would look good with the pretty vulgar lip shimmer! I’m a lil nervous about the mascara though mainly because of that hard brush. Anytime I’ve used a hard brush like that I’ve ended up hurting my eyes with it.

    • Can you tell which box variation you will get?

  29. I’ll be a little (a lot) disappointed if I get the color correcting palette. These cream palettes always seem like kids make up to me. I actually unsubscribed last time they sent out a cream corrector palette. But I’ll just give it to my granddaughter to play with. I use the Stila color correcting primer and that works great. I really want the Pretty Vulgar lippie though, which always guarantees I won’t get it. And I love Crown brushes, but this one looks like a wet n wild brush, to me. Oh well, I can take an iffy box once in a while. Next month’s palette is intriguing… I wasn’t excited for rhe Kitten palette, but I love it. No one cares, but at least I can express myself here! LOL

    • I feel the same , out of everything I really want The Pretty Vulgar lippie, That color looks great.

    • I cancelled the month they sent the concealer palette as well. No regrets.

  30. I had to cancel. This box is an amazing deal, but I’ve found myself becoming more and more ingredient conscious with my products, so I’m just not using most of the items. I know someone on the waitlist will enjoy this more, so I’m happy! ❤️

    • Keri that is awesome about the ingredient awareness. I really appreciate everyone’s input about the ingredients, etc., because it helps me to do my research and make a more informed decision.

  31. I cannot justify that bronzer palette being worth $40 ever…or the price of the blush palette either. Nearly this whole box will be going up for swap for me, but that’s okay because nearly every month is amazing with Boxy. This one just isn’t for me.

    • The prices on the off brands are way inflated. Nobody is paying that much for off brands. I mean you can buy a bobbi brown bronzer for $40ish. So while boxycharm always claims a value of $100 or more, it’s more like $50-$60 when these off brands are included with really high retail prices. This month isn’t great for me. I’m happy for the mascara and whichever lippie I get but the rest of it isn’t for me. I like how Jen luvs reviews on YouTube does her boxycharm reviews. She talks about what the value is to her and what she would pay it for. If I saw any variations of this months box at a retAil store with. $100 price tag, I wouldn’t buy it.

      • I agree, the true value for the box is $50-60, if even that. There are some cheap brand palettes I would actually have been a lot more excited to receive like Lottie London and Makeup Revolution, because they are good quality and people like them. Whereas no one has anything nice to say about RealHer…

        • Lets just say I went shopping today and found lots of these products in discounted containers at a boutique. I was so surprised and thought this is how they make money lol. I’m talking about products being marked down to 3 and 5 dollars. I guess I can understand when they give the original value of a product but are getting it at a low discount. I won’t complain because I do all my shopping online and appreciate the boxes even at their price is great. If I didn’t go shopping today, I never would of saw the products. But lets just say they are high end products and Iv’e seen lots in our boxes lately. Oh well, still thankful

      • I completely agree! I swear, if I see another RealHer product in any of my subscription boxes, I’m going to lose it.

That bronzer palette in this month’s box is a joke. The entire December box is a joke. I was really expecting more from the last box of the year, or at least a fantastic LE box but that was a bust too.

Aside from the mascara, I don’t believe any of those prices on the postcard. It’s insulting. I sometimes think that these off-brands products are all made in one place, they have a brand name slapped on them, but are in reality are just made for subscription services. I cannot imagine anyone going to Beaute Basics website and paying $40 for that mess of a bronzer. My daughter has doll makeup that’s better than that powdery disaster.

  32. I’m pretty convinced I’m getting the box with the color correcting palette, which is the one I least want. I saw Liz say further down in the comments that the weight for her box is .75. Mine is .7 and I know there’s also a .8. Seems like the one with the Vintage item would probably weigh more than one with the brush, but I hope I’m wrong.

    • It’s hard today. Canadian Charmers have a new tracking system that declares one of the items in the box for customs in the tracking email. The people with the MUG lip seem to have boxes that weigh .8, while the boxes that have the bronzer and brush are .75 but the people with the color corrector are weighing in at .76. So if yours is just saying .7 it could be variant 1 or 2.

      • **Hard to say

      • Oh, interesting! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the one I want ☺️

      • So does that mean when we get our box we have to pay customs duties now?!?

    • Pretty sure mine was .7 and is exactly like the one reviewed.

      • Yup, just got mine today and it was the same as Liz’s as well. It’s the variation I least wanted but at least I know I’ll the mascara and brush.

  33. Boxy is just too much private label for me this month and it looks like next month will be more private label collabs with Crown. I would normally never buy anything from brands like Beaute Basics, Real Her or Crown so why would I want those products in a box.

    • Isn’t that the point of subscription boxes though? To try stuff and brands you wouldn’t normally be exposed to?

Otherwise you would be better off just dropping $21 at Sephora or Ulta and get all the brand name stuff you want.

      • Exactly. That’s the spirit of sub boxes.

      • Yesss!! I feel the same way. That’s part of the fun of subscription boxes. Even with the “off brand” items, the boxes value is way more than what we paid. The Tarte mascara I received in my BC box is $23.00 alone. Sure, I get items that don’t work for me sometimes, but I love gifting to friends and family, and you can always swap. I have 8 subscription boxes total and look forward to receiving each and every one of them. Like a kid at Christmas!!

  34. Not my fave box 😟

  35. A rare miss from Boxy for me, unfortunately. I’ll be putting it all up for swap.

    • Me too. I’m hoping for the Makeup Geek lip, which I would keep, but other than that — all swap. And judging by the number of people saying the same thing (or that the box is a miss for them), I’m not thinking I’ll have a lot of luck even with that. : /

  36. Awesome box. Too bad I was taken off the wait list and somehow my billing information needed to be updated again and…wait list! Oh well eventually I guess.

    • A had the same issue. Is there someone with this issue that finally be able to get a box….. ?!?? Without suscribing Again with a different account….

    • This happen to me too! I was off the waitlist on October, but had problem with payment. It always show to their systen no fund. And this month somehow everything is fine

  37. Seeing that lip color makes me so happy! I hope I get that.

  38. Very pretty blush….can’t wait to try…hope it works on my skin tone…however, I am so hoping for variation #1 and the the other lipstick…. my box usually doesn’t ship until the 10th… and January looks so amazing with the palette that will be great for me…. yippee… I just purchased a Laura Mercier and a color pop highlighter/bronzer… I think they are the same thing, right? Anyway I am good there. It’s a worthy box for me. Liz, good to hear about the tarte mascara…can’t wait to try. thank you for the review

  39. Mine just shipped out and is .7lbs so I’m really hoping that I receive this variation or the one without the color correction pallet, I prefer to receive the pretty vulgar lippie though. Either way I really don’t want to get the color correction one cuz I’ll never use it.. I’ve been working hard on my skin & I haven’t needed a color corrector for anything thankfully in my life. Sorry for the rant but I just don’t like receiving items that I know I’ll never be able to use, seems like a waste for me… Still love my boxy no matter what though 💕💖😊

    • Mine is .7 lb as well. Based on what I saw from some Canadian folks, the 0.85 lb one has the highlighter. I don’t know whether the color correction palette weighs similar to the bronze palette or not, but based on the picture I have a feeling that the bronze palette is heavier… So right now I’m guessing that I will get #2, which is the one with color correction… At least I like the Pretty Vulgar lippie and the brush!

      • So far the Canadian tracking emails seem to be weighing in at .75 for the brush and bronzer and .76 for the brush and colour corrector. So if the US tracking emails only show .7 it could either variant with the PV lip.

  40. I love this lipstick color! I hope it’s in my boxy.

  41. I hope I get this variation. Does anybody know what this weighs?

  42. Can’t wait, hope I get this variation. Anyone with this , what’s your box weight? Mine is .8

    • The label on this box says .75 lbs – hope that helps!

      • Liz when do you rest? you are one great company, I tell you. Your honest, you take care of us and you get us discounts too Heheeehhee. Your the best Liz.

        • Aw, thanks so much! 🙂

      • Thanks Liz!

Btw, I just counted and I bought 17 boxes last month! I definitely have a problem :/

        • Julie, you are among friends with that…. 🙂

        • Julie, can I ask what 17 boxes you subscribe to. I only do Ipsy, Birchbox, Allure, Boxy and Fab Fit Fun. I loved one called Beauty Con but I think they cancelled or closed down. I would like to cancel Ipsy and Birchbox but have been doing them for a few years, can’t seem to just cancel. What boxes do you love? Thanks for your input!

    • The .8 ones seem to be variant 3 with the highlighter.

      • Oh man, no! The only thing I want is pretty vulgar :/

  43. Fingers crossed that this is my exact box. I use bronzer on a daily basis.

  44. This is what it says if you subscribe today:

“You have been placed on the waitlist as we are sold out of boxes for the current month. Once a box is available to fill your order, you will automatically be removed from the waitlist, your credit card will be automatically charged in accordance with your selection of payment term, and the terms as stated above will apply. You may cancel at any time while on the waitlist by emailing BOXYCHARM at [email protected] including the word, UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line.”

  45. Interesting that a lipstick with a name like “Pretty Vulgar” has this sort of dainty, pastoral design. 🙂

    • I know, its wierd. I just got the nightingale palette of theirs at Sephora for a friend, and it has the cutest birdcage design. The brand name throws me off to begin with, since ‘vulgar’ is not something I would want to be, and it’s really a disconnect with the shabby chic design of a lot of their products.

      • Pretty Vulgar also has a setting spray that comes in pink adorable atomizer. The squeezey thing is actually fake. It works like a normal setting spray. But it still looks cute on your makeup table. Only the nail polish in tiny liquor bottles really matches the brand name.

    • That is funny…
