The Bookish Box is a book-inspired subscription box from the online shop, Appraising Pages.

The Bookish Box Bump In The Night October 2017

Originally, The Bookish Box was a subscription box filled with bookish objects only—no actual books involved. Recently, though, they changed up their game and added several subscription varieties to choose from, including one that does have a book inside!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This review is of the Women's Sized box that includes a t-shirt for $29.99 a month.

This month's theme is "Bump in the Night". So spooky!

Buffy Vinyl Sticker

Buffy fan or not, the quote on this sticker will get you thinkin'. It's from Season 2, Episode 7, in a conversation with Giles. Out of context, it's sort of dystopian and delightful. It has a blue-and-purple watercolor background, and I like that the lettering is watercolor-inspired, too.

Buffy Patch by Two Ghouls Press

This is another Buffy reference, though quite honestly, I'm even more of a Scooby Doo fan, so this works out great for me! In BTVS, "Scoobies" refers to the group of friends that battles the supernatural bad guys. You know, vampire slayers. This is such an intricate, high-quality patch. It's iron-on, but I would also reinforce it with a few stitches just to be sure it's on there tight.

Frankenstein Bookmark

Oh man, does this bookmark have a great quote on it! It's actually from the movie and not the book, but it's a quote from The Creature. Visually, this bookmark isn't very pretty to look at, but I'll definitely be keeping it around and using its quote as a prompt to ponder human nature (creature nature?) from time to time—which might sound weird, but hey, we're all a little weird, aren't we?

Dracula Coffin Ring

This ring arrives in a little organza bag. I appreciate that it's an appropriately-sized bag and the ring isn't swimming in it! Life's simple pleasures...anyway, I'm not one to wear coffin-themed jewelry, but I do like this ring. It's not so overtly coffin-shaped that it would look out-of-place with a simple, everyday look; the black faux stone is the main focus and isn't too dissimilar from some vintage rings I've found in local shops. That said, I'm not much of a silver-wearer, so I will probably be passing this along as a gift. It's adjustable, so I won't have to worry about it being the right size for whoever I give it to.

Raven(ish) Infinity Scarf

I think Bookish Box calls this scarf "Raven(ish)" because it's not specifically related to Edgar Allen Poe's classic poem, but it's an obvious nod. This circle scarf is lightweight, so you can wear it year-round, maybe more for decoration than warmth. The black ravens printed on this accessory are so realistic and severe that you'll be making quite a bold statement wearing this piece! I really like that the blue design in the background is almost smoke-like—it adds to the mysterious ambiance of this scarf even more.

T-Shirt, Inspired by The Raven Cycle Series by Maggie Stiefvater

This tee's quote ("The Trees Speak Latin") is from The Dream Thieves, the second book in Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Cycle series. This is another one of those quotes that's super cool and mind-jogging, even if you don't know the reference. I'm a big nature-lover, so the tree-themed graphic really appeals to me. Plus, the shirt's burgundy color is awesomely autumnal! It's a "women's" cut shirt, which means it's a bit more body-hugging and the sleeves are shorter. It's a good, comfy weekend shirt.

The Verdict: I had a lot of fun exploring The Bookish Box, and I imagine a younger reader who's more immersed in these storylines would love it even more! That said, Buffy is quite the throwback, and Frankenstein, and The Raven are timeless works, so there's really something in here for spooky story lovers of all ages.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order now to nab the November box!

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $34.49 after shipping. The cost of tees from The Bookish Shop is $22.00, meaning the remaining five items must have a value of about $12.49, or about $2.50 each. While that seems extremely high for a paper bookmark and even a bit high for the vinyl sticker, it's an amazing value for the scarf, patch, and ring, so it all balances out.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

I don’t think I agree with your interpretation of the Giles quote. But then I know the context very well. ☺️

Buffy is having a bad day, and she needs some comfort & reassurance, even if she knows it’s false. She tells Giles, “Lie to me.” (Which, significantly, is also the episode title.) So he does.

Hey, Marion! Thanks for reading and for your explanation. I’m familiar with the scene, but I know not everyone is, so I was attempting to offer a different POV and show that you don’t have to be a BTVS fan to enjoy the quote. 🙂 In context, it’s a great ending to that episode!

I desperately want that scarf, does it have any brand info or any way I could find it or is it exclusive to the box?

Christen Russo

Hey Dorian! I wasn’t able to find any info about the scarf online, but I reached out to Bookish Box’s customer service team to see if they have an extras lying around. Stay tuned!
