The 2017 Short Story Advent Calendar is available now!

The Box: The 2017 Short Story Advent Calendar

This is the third calendar of its kind, and we here at Hingston & Olsen are so excited to provide another brilliant set of 24 stories for you to open, one by one, on the mornings leading up to Christmas.

Contributors to the 2017 calendar include:

  • Kelly Link (Get in TroubleMagic for Beginners)
  • Jim Gavin (Middle Men, AMC's forthcoming Lodge 49)
  • Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body and Other Parties)
  • Ken Liu (The Paper MenagerieThe Grace of Kings)
  • Maggie Shipstead (Astonish MeSeating Arrangements)
  • and [REDACTED x 19]!

As always, the 2017 Short Story Advent Calendar is available in a one-time print run, so once it's gone, it's gone forever.

It’s also been reimagined design-wise. Did someone say "translucent vellum sleeve"? Oh baby. Let's see that thing again.

The Cost: $55 CAD = $43.97 USD

Shipping: Within Canada and the U.S.: $12 for one calendar, $20 for two, $25 for three, $30 for four, and $35 for five.

The Products: Twenty-four individually sealed stories.

Are you grabbing a short story calendar?

And check out all of the 2017 Advent Calendars available!

Yikes! If I didn’t already have too much to do to get ready for Christmas. Although I do love reading.. . maybe it should be a different time of the year advent calendar. . .Maybe the 12 days of Christmas, from Christmas to Epiphany, when the planning stress is over.

The link to 2017 advent calendars has all the ones from 2016. Is there a better link?

Ok. I said below I think I had to get this. I decided I did have to get it. And I added on The Ghost Box too! I love Patton Oswalt, the author list for that one looked great too, and horror stories in a gorgeous box?? Cooooommme oooonnn. Yes! Thank you so much for letting us know about this. I would never have known otherwise!!!!

I did the exact same, love ghost stories and Patton Oswalt!

I got one last year – loved it – already ordered for this year. Pricey, yes, but the presentation is gorgeous, it’s the only Advent-type thing I do (I justify it as a holiday decoration, haha), and it’s important to me to support special literary projects like this.

As for the stories, they are for adults, not children; my teenagers enjoyed some of them last year, but it’s definitely NOT a box for little kiddos.

This does look fun! It would be great if someone would also come up with a kid version. Hint hint. 🙂

Thanks so much for the response! I’ll probably sit out this year, but it’s definitely on my radar for next.

LOVE this idea! Don’t love the price. Anyone know if these are adult stories or..what age grouping? Thanks!

I second all of this.

Looks like adult-ish. I looked through last year’s reviews on Goodreads and they were all pretty positive. Most said they enjoyed most of the stories and would definitely buy again this year. This just sticks out to me as a novel (aaaaaaaaahahaha…sorry) idea amongst all of the beauty advent calendars coming out and I think I just have to buy it. I was just complaining how I’m so busy lately and intimidated by starting a new book as it will take months to finish. Now I’ll have a bunch of short stories to inspire me to sit down, relax for a little while amongst the holiday chaos and read more every day.
