There was a card asking you to share your box contents on social media. This subscription typically does not have an information card with it.

Sencha Guava Green Tea Mints (1.2 oz) – Value $3.95

I have received these in lots of subscription boxes but that’s OK because I really like them. I find that adding a bit of green tea to the mints really does help fight bacteria that can cause bad breath. And I like the fruity ones a little more than the cinnamon ones, so the flavor is also a win.

G + H Tea Services U Handle Spoon – Value $10?

This particular spoon was hard to find online but there are a lot of similar-sized items from the same manufacturer on Amazon, so that’s where I got the value estimate. Anyway, you can rest a U-handle spoon like this on the edge of a teacup or honey jar or really anywhere that you don’t want it to be constantly sitting directly in the container. If you do a Google image search for U-handle tea spoon, you can get a lot of ideas.  I don’t have any others like this in my collection so that is fun.  I definitely appreciate the variety in teaware provided with this subscription.

Savannah Bee Company Honey Straws (2.24 oz) – Value $6

This is (kind of) a local company for me (same state, anyway). Honey straws are convenient to keep in my desk at work because I don’t have to worry about cleaning spoons, open jars, etc. I drink black tea like a fiend at my desk and one of these was a great afternoon pick-me-up in one of my normal cups of tea.

Nicobella Apple Crisp Power Bites (2 oz) – Value $5? (buy a 3 pack for $14.95)

These had a nice apple flavor without being too sweet (actually, they contain no added sugars). If you have ever had Somersaults, these had a similar texture. They kind of reminded me of a breakfast food. For those with dietary restrictions, they are vegan, gluten-free, and soy free, though they do contain almonds and walnuts. I enjoyed trying them out and it’s always fun to discover a new snack food company. Now I need it to get cold out so I can order something from this page

Battle Born Tea from BlendBee (2 oz) – Value $11.66

What I find very interesting about the BlendBee website is that you can actually create a custom tea and they’ll blend it for you. I may have to try that some time. Discovering new companies like this is one reason I love subscription boxes. But anyway, on to this particular tea. It is a green tea blend and includes sarsaparilla root, ginger, sage, juniper berries, and elderberries. It also has fennel seed and licorice root, which I could honestly do without (I really do not like licorice in tea and it is showing up EVERYWHERE these days), but mostly I thought the blend was great and I didn’t notice the licorice as much if I didn’t steep it for too long.

Here is what the tea looks like when it is brewed.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $37 for the September Tea Box Express. That’s definitely above the cost of the box plus shipping and I was really happy with the items this month. I discovered a couple of fun, new companies and received an old favorite (that I happened to be low on) as well. I like that, with this subscription, you don’t get all tea, but also some fun accessories and snacks, and I think that they do a great job of picking accessories so you don’t accumulate too many of the same type of item.

What did you think of Tea Box Express? Do you get any tea subscriptions?

A few years back I read that most Norwegians like licorice which surprised me because I have always loved licorice with a passion. I am Norwegian-American and love the licorice ice cream that you can get in Fergus Falls, Minn.

I have found that Swedish and Danish people also like licorice. I got a whole package of licorice tea once (I mean, like, that’s all that was in it) and gave it to a Danish guy after deciding I didn’t like it and he couldn’t have been more pleased.

I love tea, but I feel like this is a bit underwhelming for a tea-themed subscription box. The spoon is interesting, but if I paid over $30 for this box I would be very disappointed with the returns even if I liked everything, and even more disappointed if I ended up disliking the tea or snacks. Perhaps if they had more items at a variety of price points, such as several new teas to try and several tea snacks, it would be more tempting.

My favorite tea shop is Cup and Kettle in Leavenworth, where I pay around $2 an oz. for their custom blends (their white champagne raspberry is amazing) – so even if I liked the blend in this box I doubt I would go pay $6 an oz for it.

I order from adagio. They have a better tea club that is only like $6/month for just the tea loose or bagged and I like the variety of trying new teas every month. 😉
