Loving Pets It’s Purely Natural 100% Pure Dried Buffalo (2 oz) – Retail Value $2.99
Although this brand is usually good, this treat was not a hit with my crew. It is freeze-dried buffalo (I guess?) in flat sheets that are way, way too big for a cat to eat. Sneaky bit it and then looked at me like, “OK, now where’s the treat that I smell?” This was out of stock pretty much everywhere but I have linked to a site that does give a retail price.
Vitalcat Freeze-Dried Minnows (0.5 oz) – Retail Value $4.99 (on sale for $4.45 here as of 10/27)
This is a brand I’ve actually bought (they have freeze-dried rabbit that Mr. Kitty can eat), and I think it’s a good brand, but my cats also don’t like freeze-dried whole fish. I’ve received this exact item before, in another box, and my cats wouldn’t eat it then, either.
Petlinks Crazy Tail Spinning String Cat Toy – Retail Value $18.99 (on sale for $8.17 here as of 10/27)
Angus liked the string on this. This was pretty heavy, though, and as soon as a cat started pulling on the string, it would fall down from wherever it was attached (there is a suction cup on the back). I couldn’t get the tail to spin but a further investigation required a small screwdriver to open the battery compartment and I have no idea where my husband keeps those. I figure I’ll worry about the battery once I can get this to stay attached to a door or piece of furniture without falling down.
Companion Cat Toy: Duck with Feathers and Bell – Retail Value $4.99?
Feathers are always a hit at my place and this had a lot of them. Bells ensure that Angus will find the toy in the bedroom in the middle of the night. This was a little on the large size compared to your average catnip mouse, but not too big to for Angus to toss around. This packaging is so generic that even a Google image search wasn’t working to find this item, so I estimated based on similar items I’ve received in other cat subscription boxes.
Red and Black Cape Costume – Retail Value $9.89?
This did not have a brand name or a tag or a label of any kind on it. Quality-wise, it is definitely skimpier on the materials and not as well-made as the small dog costumes at Target (which you can also put on cats). On the other hand, who leaves cat costumes on for so long that durability is even an issue? I actually got every single cat to wear this for a picture. I found what looks to be the same item only on eBay and from third-party sellers on Amazon, so take that price with a grain of salt – it seems high for the quality of the item.
And now the gratuitous cat photos you’ve been waiting for:
Aaaaah, I can’t believe I got this on him.
Angus with the duck.
Angus with the tail from the spinner toy.
Sneaky sniffs the buffalo.
This was the best picture of Sneaky I got with the cape. She started backing up (as if that would slide it off her) as soon as I put it on. I’m lucky she didn’t disembowel me.
Monkey in the cape.
Mr. Kitty wasn’t too sure what was going on here.
I got the cape on Madison too. I love the look on his face in the first photo.
Verdict: I calculated a retail value of around $42 for the October Pet Treater Cat Pack ($30.49 with sale prices). That’s quite a respectable value for a $12.99 cat subscription box, even considering that the treats were not well-liked by any of my cats. It was almost worth it just for the cape – I can’t believe Angus put up with that. I’ve only received this subscription for two months so far, so it is hard to make a recommendation – last month was nearly perfect for us, this month less so. We will see what November brings.
What do you think of the October 2017 Pet Treater box? Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?
