FYI - Cairn Obsidian pricing has increased to $249.95 per quarter. If you're a current subscriber, you will be subscription will renew at $239.95 in December.

Check out our review of the October 2017 Cairn Obsidian box to see what you can expect from this subscription!

Hi,

We hope you've taken your Fall Obsidian products out for some high-quality trailgating time. The Cairn Crew believes that the more time we spend outside, the better. That's why we started a company that would inspire people to get outside.

Our quarterly Obsidian service was launched two years ago with the goal of elevating subscribers' outdoor experiences through collections of premium, innovative gear. We're stoked not only that so many outdoor enthusiasts, like you, entrust Obsidian to be their vehicle for discovery; but also that great outdoor brands like Marmot, Klymit, Goal Zero, and Voormi have been pumped to launch their latest gear through Obsidian.

As we head into our third year of Obsidian, it's necessary for us to adjust the price of the service. Starting on Tuesday, the price of an Obsidian on our site will be $249.95 per quarter.  As a thank you for being a legacy subscriber, your price starting with your December renewal will be $239.95 per quarter, and will always be lower than the new subscriber price. US subscribers will continue to see free shipping (international shipping rates of $42 to Canada and $63 to all other countries still apply).

Note that if you need to cancel your subscription for any reason, and decide to sign back up at a later date, you’ll come back in under the list price of $249.95 per quarter.  The legacy pricing we’re offering is for uninterrupted legacy subscriptions.

This adjustment will allow us to continue to provide the premium experience that you've come to expect as an Obsidian subscriber. You’ll still see well over $300 of value in each collection and often get early access to new products on the market.

Thank you for being a part of the Cairn family. Your feedback, excitement, and adventures help inspire the gear that goes into every collection. So, open up your box and try new things, go new places, and share the experience with more people.

WOW – 25% is an ENORMOUS price increase!! It’s clearly well beyond any rise needed to cover general inflation or increased shipping costs. And they’ve provided almost no information on what subscribers will get with that higher price. All of this <1 mo before Black Friday?! I don't think they thought this through very well.

Blergh. It’s going to be a cancel for me too, for exactly the reasons stated. Too close to MSRP and no control whether they are needed items. I’ve had some excellent Obsidian boxes, but half had products that I didn’t need. Cheaper to buy items straight out than gamble so much on more overpric d metal cups etc.

ugh. I just commented how much we love this box in the last review, but paying $250 for $300 worth of mystery items isn’t that great of a deal. Imagine if a box costs $25 and they only guaranteed at least $30 MSRP… I know they say that you will receive MORE than $300 but that wording allows them a lot of wiggle room, especially with overly inflated MSRP prices boxes use.

Goodbye Cairn Obsidian subscription – we enjoyed you for the past four quarters at least…

Sad. I’ll probably keep subscribed for December as a Christmas gift to myself then cancel unless December happens to blow me out of the water in curation and value.

I was *just* looking at the recent review today, thinking of subscribing. It would be a stretch for me because, really, if I’m spending $200 on gear, I’d rather have more control over the options! This price hike makes it an easy pass.
Bummer.

Wow! I thought they realized that it was too much and had lowered the price. Guess not. I kept waiting to sub because of the price. Some of the boxes look great, but the value isn’t too much more than the price. It would be wiser to just purchase the items you liked from the box and skip those you aren’t interested in. Heck, it could even be cheaper to do it that way if you catch things on sale.

Exactly my thinking. I have notifications for any Cairn news and eagerly opened the email, thinking the price had dropped.
The thing that has kept me from from subscribing has been the high price point and not being able to justify spending that money and potentially (likely) paying for items I won’t use or already own.

I have to say I’m pretty disappointed by this. I’m going to stick it out for the winter box to see if there is a significant difference in value and products included otherwise I will be cancelling. This is too bad because I loved this box.
