There was an information card in the box listing the items. It also had my cats’ names – even Angus!

“The Boarding School” Bowtie and Collar Set from Cat Couture – Listed Value $35

Some months with this subscription, you’ll get a costume or cat hat, and sometimes you will get a collar. I think I have enough of these now for each of my cats to have one! Anyway, I like this one better than some of the others because the buckle is a bit smaller and not as heavy.

There’s also usually a small candy or piece of gum or something in the box as a bonus.

Gunner Toy from Whiskers n’ Paws – Value $3.30 (buy a package of 5 for $16.50; listed value $7)

This is made from rabbit fur and deer leather and Angus thinks it is wonderful. I actually had to take it away from him and hide it because I was afraid he was going to bring it downstairs (because surely Nyx would also think it was awesome).

Felted Wool Balls from Animalove – Value $9.85 USD (listed value $18)

So I am noticing the value from the information card is pretty high and I think it *might* be in Canadian dollars and also include shipping (Animalove is based in Montreal).  I am wondering if all of the Whiskerbox information card values are in Canadian dollars because that might explain why everything seems so expensive. Regardless, the $9.85 is a US dollar amount based on a conversion from the price on the Animalove website. Anyway, the name pretty much says it all. I couldn’t get a good picture of someone playing with these, but they have moved up and down the upstairs hallway all afternoon, so they are clearly loved.

Premium All Natural Salmon Treat from Nava Pets (3 oz) – Value $3 (buy 8 oz for $7.99)

These are premium, all natural crunchy cat treats. They’re shaped like little fish. They were pretty popular among the cats who can have them, and Mr. Kitty sure wanted them (he kept trying to get in the bag). I felt bad pushing him away, but they do contain fish as well as chicken, so he can’t have them. (They are grain free, though.)

BFF Tuna and Chicken Charm Me Food from Weruva (3 oz) – Value $1 (buy a case of 12 for $12.02)

You’ll usually get one food pouch or can (usually from Weruva) with Whiskerbox. This month it was a tuna and chicken food and this got my cats very excited. You can see them eating it below. I found this food easier to get out of the pouch than some of the others, and my cats licked the plate clean. Everyone kept it down, too (except poor Mr. Kitty, who can’t have it).

What you can’t see in this photo is that Angus is hanging on by his front claws and his back legs are dangling in the air. He is not the smartest when it comes to climbing the cat towers.

I always give Angus first crack at the wet food because he is too timid to get in there with the others.

Angus tries a treat.

Angus had a lot of fun with the rabbit fur toy, too.

As usual, Angus didn’t work up the nerve to take a place around the plate of wet food.

I caught Madison and put the collar on while he was eating the wet food. I don’t think he knows what happened…

If you give Madison enough treats and take enough pictures, eventually you’ll see his tongue.

Monkey is wearing the collar, but you kind of can’t see it under all that fur.

I just liked the look on his face here.

If there are treats, Sneaky is a happy camper.

What is kind of hard to tell is that once I put the collar on Mr. Kitty, he and Monkey started to engage in a mutual grooming session. Also, I don’t think Mr. Kitty was happy about the collar…

Verdict: I calculated a value of $52.15 for the September 2017 Whiskerbox. There is a little uncertainty there because of the Canadian/US price conversion, and you will have to decide if the value is there for you. There are several things I think this subscription has going for it, personally: (1) the presentation is excellent, from the box and information card on down, (2) there are some items that are exclusive (the costumes and collars) or otherwise hard to get ahold of in the US, (3) the foods and treats tend to be premium, and (4) there is something in this box for pretty much every one of my cats (Mr. Kitty and Monkey get stuck with the costumes, Madison and Sneaky like the food and treats, and Angus loves the toys, with some crossover between categories each month).

I love it when it’s kitty pic time!

The felt balls have now made it down the stairs repeatedly. Angus is a bad, bad little boy. Nyx nearly got a taste of one…

Ragan,
I love your reviews! I wonder if you have an opinion on the best cat box for young and old cats together. Right now I have a 14 year old exotic shorthair with hip dysplasia and two giant rescue brothers who love to battle each other and play with any toy that comes their way. One has some Siamese ancestry so is super vocal and on the pudgy side, so probably no food unless it’s healthy. I’d love your advice if possible. Also, can’t wait to see your next vintage dress box!

Ragan

I have a mix of ages with mostly older cats.

Mr. Kitty is 13
Monkey is 11 or 12
Madison is 10
Sneaky is 9
Angus is 1

Most of the toys are enjoyed by Angus, Sneaky, and Monkey (especially Angus) and all but Mr. Kitty eat treats. I have lately been really happy with Meowbox but I don’t know that the treats are healthy, per se (though you can always feed fewer of them). A lot of boxes are sending freeze dried meat these days — if your cats like that, it is low in calories. KitNipBox has also been good but does send some toys on the larger side.
