This month, each box is getting a bold autumn-inspired lip product to help you switch it up with the changing seasons. Here’s the lineup. Let us know what you're most excited for.

I wish Sephora would be more generous in revealing spoilers and sharing what the theme of the boxes much earlier. I generally like surprises, but it’s hard for me to get excited about the Sephora play box when it’s such a hit and miss every month.

Sephora don’t seem to really follow your profile as a guideline for what samples to send you. It seems like their algorithm is based off of one aspect of your profile each month. For example, they might send anyone who’s listed as oily skin a certain box. Or during another month, those who are listed as having anti-aging concerns will get a certain box. That’s just an assumption and why I think people get colors/products that don’t suit them.

Obviously, a lot of us like spoilers that’s why we come here. I often don’t even read the post about spoilers for Ipsy and Birchbox because they do such a better job of letting their subscribers know in advance what they’ll be getting.

I wouldn’t mind Sephora’s lack of spoilers if they constantly sent me great samples, but the problem is they don’t. So I have a hard time getting excited about getting my box. Most of the time, I find myself thinking, “Please don’t send me somethingvI don’t want!!” LOL.

I don’t have that feeling with Ipsy. I get really excited about Ipsy because I feel they’ve done a great job at sending me things that I really like. Even when I get items I’m not as thrilled about, it’s not a huge deal because I often like so much of what they send. I’m more forgiving because they do a good job most of the time where is Sephora is opposite.

Sorry for the long rant. I was just curious if anyone else felt the same way? 😀

I’m with you on this, I don’t even care about my Play box at this time. I already know what I’m getting in my Ipsy bag so I’m excited to get that and try those out. I don’t know everything in my Boxycharm box this month but I know what some of the items are and Boxycharm has been a big win for me so far so I’m excited to see what else I get. Play has been a big disappointment for me so far and not giving me any idea really on what I’m getting after I’ve already been charged for them is frustrating. Not gonna lie, I haven’t even bothered opening my Play box from last month yet because I’m over it. I meant to cancel before the 1st of this month but I forgot about it so now I’m waiting to see what they send me before I cancel it this month.

I agree with you 100 percent. I am subscribed to Ipsy, Birchbox, Sephora Play, and two boxes that are curated for women of color (Cocotique and We Are Onyx’s OnyxBox), and I already know what I’m getting in my Ipsy bag and my Birchbox (I also know what’s in this month’s OnyxBox, since I received it two days ago), but I am getting impatient over the spoilers for the Sephora Play box, since I am afraid of receiving samples that are going to be useless for me. I just resubscribed, so the September box will be my first box (I was previously subscribed for May and June), so I’m hoping that I get a box where at least 4 of the items are going to be useful (it’s at least 3 for Ipsy and Birchbox). I wish that Sephora would release more spoilers since the boxes do take a while to ship. Maybe it’s just me, but I am always wanting to see what I’m getting in all my boxes each month. Also, the spoilers do help in determining whether or not I am going to be excited about a particular box.

Contact the customer support via phone or chat and check if they have some boxes left, if not they will give you some points for not sending you the box. And also ask them to refund you if they charged your card.

My first box ever was last month and I got 221. I was very dissapointed because i got kat von d concealer and hourglass foundation in deep shades, anticellulite from clarins ( not excited about it) and a hair product for thick dry hair
My profile says light complexion, thin hair…. I would of rather have gotten any other box but oh well. This month im getting box 704 .

Omg meee too! I’m not sure what’s coming this month but I received the exact same box as you last month and I was super upset! I’m a very fair blond with baby fine hair. I received very dark skinned products and the hair product was also inappropriate too. I was super mad. It’s like no one bothered to read my profile at all. It better not happen again and it shouldn’t have happened at all

For those who are interested in what color families each lipstick listed is in, I visited the Sephora pages and they list them as follows:

Cíate London Liquid Velvet Moisturizing Matte Liquid Lipstick in Diva – true red

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Happy – warm fuschia

Wander Beauty Wanderout Dual Lipsticks in Wanderberry* – Burgundy

*This article only lists the Wanderberry shade as an option, the other shade in the dual lipstick product as shown on Sephora is Barely There – a mauve nude. From what everyone is saying and what MSA has listed here, Barely There will not be a potential sample in Play this month.

Hope this helps those who are worried about what color they receive! Everyone’s screens will show colors in a different way and, in my experience, the colors often look like they are in one color family when in fact they are not. This still doesn’t tell you exactly what the shades are but it gives you a better idea of the categories at least: brick rose, berry, true red, warm fuschia, and burgundy.

I’m 912 also, but I have medium-dark (although my complexion is more on the “caramel” colored side; I’m a light-skinned black woman) combination skin, black curly dry/damaged hair and brown eyes. I can only tell you the boxes I got in May and June (I wasn’t subscribed in July or August, so I didn’t receive either of those boxes):

I’m hoping for the Wander Beauty lipstick because I LOVE the one from the Allure box, but I’m not holding my breath.

Saaaaaame. I really would love a foundation/concealer sample in a box but I’m giving up hope on that ever happening. A white foundation mixer would be awesome, too. While a lot of the lightest shades in foundation lines are too dark for me, I’d like to get something other than the “oh crap, I guess let’s just throw some translucent setting powder in there” that almost always happens when everyone else gets foundation/concealer. Ugh.

Same here! The box was terrible and I’ve gotten almost the same thing in each box I’ve received! Every month it’s a liquid matte lipstick and mascara! I’m so sick of it! If I don’t get the wander beauty this month, I’m cancelling. I can’t take another liquid matte!

I liked my play box over my ipsy, but that’s just personal preference. I’ve had ipsy for almost 2 years, but it just seems like they can’t get it right. I’ve gotten maybe 2-3 things out of each bag that I’ve liked, I just used all my points so October will be my last bag. I’ve recently subbed to boxycharm and haven’t been disappointed at all. I’ve been thinking about the allure box but haven’t seen too many reviews. But as far as my play box, I like it, I use the extra points I get, and haven’t had too many complaints except a lost box but that was due to customer service. Other than that I think it’s worth the $10. Especially if you shop there frequently, you get 10 points for the box plus another 50 if you buy something in the store for the month.

I had that problem until I found out I can opt out of 2 categories (lip products, bronzers/contours, eyeshadow, nail polish, etc) and really narrowed down my profile selections to only products I knew I’d be happy to get. I also got hardcore with my reviews giving products I won’t use the worst rating possible and products that I’m happy to recive the best rating. I was rating the actual product by it’s actual qualities, it’s not the product’s fault I’m not interested in it, but I got frustrated and started giving items I don’t want the lowest rating possible and writing “I will not use this product” for the reviews you share to FB or Twitter for points. It seems to have worked because I’ve been very pleased with my past couple bags now.

Honestly I like Sephora play because I get to try out items I would never pay for so it’s pretty nice in that aspect. I also make sure to tick a lot of boxes for the play profile so that it gives them a wide range of options to choose from for products and so far I always get boxes that fit my profile well.

Based on my own experience with both Ipsy and Sephora Play, I would say that I prefer Ipsy over Sephora Play. I always feel like Ipsy really does pay attention to my profile, even if I’m not excited about a particular month’s bag, as I always get a bag where about 3 or 4 items are going to be used. Sephora Play, on the other hand, doesn’t even bother looking at my profile (or so it seems to me) because both of the boxes I’ve gotten so far (I was subscribed in May and June; I just resubscribed in time for September’s box) seemed to be random. Half of the items in my May box were useless and I ended up swapping my June box with someone else. So (and this is based on my personal opinion; there are people who would choose this box over Ipsy, and 50 bonus Beauty Insider points doesn’t hurt, either), I would say that Ipsy is better. Although you never know; you might actually like Sephora Play better. It just depends on your preferences.

No! I’ve subscribed to Ipsy, Birchbox, Play, and Boxycharm and Ipsy is the 1 I’vehad the longest. This is my 3rd or 4th month with Play and it’s been very disappointing. I stayed with Birchbox for a year but I have no idea why, I received mostly repeats of skin care products and their reward system sucks. I canceled Birchbox last month, meant to also cancel Play because it’s just a disappointment when compared to what I get from Ipsy for the same price but I forgot so I’m going to see what I get this month then cancel if it’s yet another worthless box for me. I’ve been considering a couple other beauty boxes to replace Birchbox and Play but I haven’t found 1 that excites me like Ipsy and Boxycharm do.

After three months of trying out a handful of boxes, Ipsy and Allure have been my favorites (Allure is $15). Play is OK. This is how I rank the boxes I’ve tried: Allure, Ipsy, Play, Birchbox (two months in and not impressed).
