Pearific - Green Tea
I've had green teas that include pear before and they've always been really pleasant. The steeping instructions on these lighter teas are worth paying attention to! I've definitely overbrewed green tea before and it's a shame to ruin a nice flavor. The brewing instructions for this are 170° for 1.5 minutes. If you don't have a kettle with a thermometer, the Field to Cup suggestion of pouring boiling water into a mug, letting it sit for 45 seconds, then adding you tea leaves - has always worked for me. The only ingredients added to the green tea are pear pieces and sunflower blossoms. I love how pretty the tea looks before you brew it - those huge sunflower blossom pieces are awesome! This tasted like a smooth green tea with a mild pear overtone. I can't say that I noticed the sunflower blossoms all that much because I'm not totally sure what that would taste like. But the crisp pear paired nicely with green tea.
Sweet Heat - Fruit Tea
This name was intriguing and so was the tea! This tea is mostly floral and fruity with ginger bringing the heat element. I've found that teas with larger, chunky ingredients take longer to brew and this fell into that category. With a slightly longer brew time at 6 minutes, this tea produced a really pretty pinky-red brew. I really liked how it started out as a regular fruit tea, with strawberry and apple at the forefront. The floral notes from the hibiscus and rose added to the sweetness. That's when the heat came in from the ginger and I really loved how the flavors all complimented each other. I love ginger and regularly add grated ginger to my teas (especially during cold season!) so I did that to push this flavor a little further.
Dark Berries - Black Tea
I only recently tried a pu'erh tea for the first time and was hoping to try more so I was excited to see this in the box! Pu'erh teas have a nice depth to them and the lighter ingredients of this tea go along with that nicely. The raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, and pomegranate add the perfect amount of fruitiness to a heavier tea. I liked the bit of sweetness that came through and added a little more sweetener to round this out even more. This turned out to be a more substantial tea than I originally expected!
Apples N' Honey - Black Blend
This was a black and green tea blend. The green tea in the blend kind of mellows out the heaviness that came come from the black tea and the additional ingredients contribute to that as well. The apple and cinnamon create a really full flavor without weighing down the overall taste. The combination of these ingredients did give me a nice honey flavoring as well. It was a really interesting combination of flavors that felt perfect for autumn.
Verdict: Field to Cup is one of my favorite subscriptions and I think the Tea Explorer option gives you a good introduction to their offerings. I appreciate that you always get a mix of black, green, fruit, white, herbal, or blended teas. My favorite this month was a tie between the Apples N' Honey and the Sweet Heat.
