The intro card makes it quite clear that this limited-edition palette is full of sexy shades!

It also arrived with a lovely personalized note.

This month's palette was designed by social media influencer, Melly Sanchez. Known for her fierce, full-on glam looks, this month focused on celestial tones like gleaming silvers and greys, deep berry hues, and starry shimmers.

Let's get to the makeup!

Deck of Scarlet August 2017

The palette arrived in a protective paper sleeve that mimics that design on the palette itself. "Stand for something bolder" is the headline on the back of the sleeve -- seemingly, the theme of this month. All ingredients are listed there as well.

The sleek, black and white flower design is striking and elegant. It conveniently has two opening flaps (one side for lipsticks, the other for powders).

Pretty handy for keeping everything tidy -- especially if you're taking your palette with you on-the-go. The large mirror is awesome for travel, too!

Deck of Scarlet August 2017

This palette includes the following:

2 lip colors:

  • Sasha - Creamy, terra cotta rose nude
  • Maria - Bold, purple berry

3 eyeshadows:

  • Diamond Dust - Sparkling, shimmery silver
  • Sagittarius - Matte, dusty berry
  • New York - Steel grey with a hint of warm sparkle

2 cheek colors:

  • Pinot Grigio - Champagne shimmer highlight
  • Adorable - Matte, dusty terra cotta rose

A one-stroke graphic lip crayon is also included. The shade is Tease, a deep, brown berry.

Here's everything swatched in both soft and direct sunlight! L-R (or bottom-top): Sasha, Maria, Diamond Dust, Sagittarius, New York, Pinot Grigio, Adorable, Tease lip crayon. My skin is about an NW20 for context.

And here's my own look! Aside from tinted moisturizer, concealer, mascara, eyeliner, and brows, all items used are from the Deck of Scarlet palette.

This palette definitely caters to an evening look, so I knew that my first experience with testing these products would involve a pretty dramatic face. Given that the eyeshadows are all fairly high contrast, a silver smokey eye was the natural choice. I decided to compliment this bolder-than-my-usual eye with the nude-toned lip products included in this kit.

Deck of Scarlet August 2017

I started with Sagittarius in my eye crease. After blending it out a bit, I used Diamond Dust on my entire lid. The pigmentation and coverage of both of these shadows were impressive! Especially Diamond Dust -- the shimmer really stuck, and the silver hue has a significant boldness to it. This shade went under my bottom lash line as well. Then, I added New York along my outer corner to smoke things up a bit. This shade wasn't quite as rich as the others, and I did notice some fall-out of the shimmer. Even after 15 minutes or so, the swatch of it on my arm faded to a nearly matte grey. Still, it provided some much-needed depth to this glam eye look. I finished my eyes with the felt tip liner from July's Deck of Scarlet box and mascara.

Deck of Scarlet August 2017

Since my eyes are bold as can be, I opted for a mixture of the Tease crayon and Sasha lipstick on my lips. Sasha is a warm nude that still provides some saturated color (on my fair skin tone, at least), and Tease is much darker and bolder. I found that lightly outlining my lips with the crayon and then blending Sasha into it resulted in a nice way to add some extra dimension to my lips. Both are wonderfully creamy and rich.

Maria is another gorgeous lip color that's a bit more my speed. This one isn't quite a creamy, but the pigmentation is still there. It would look fantastic with a light swipe of Diamond Dust and mascara on an otherwise pretty bare face... I guess this palette can totally work for a not-so-overtly glam look after all! Love an easy bold lip! This autumnal hue would also be stunning on darker skin tones.

To finish up my face, I blended a bit of Adorable blush along my cheekbones and down to the apples of my cheeks. I found that this technique works well for my face shape when it comes to evening looks. Adorable provided a subtle terra cotta flush to my cheeks. I'm so excited to use it throughout the fall months. Perfect! Pinot Grigio highlight went on my cheekbones, brow bones, cupid's bow, and the corners of my eyes. This is more of a subtle highlight than I was expecting, but it balanced out the wilder, more seductive shades of this palette nicely.

Verdict: I'm loving my experience with Deck of Scarlet so far. This was my second box and a nice contrast to the last. Though the glam colors were a bit outside of my usual, they pushed me out of my comfort zone. Always appreciated for a makeup lover like myself -- I never like feeling stuck in a makeup routine rut. PLUS, after creating this glam look, I now have an excuse to go out this evening!

The listed value from Deck of Scarlet is $80, and I'd agree that this set is worth somewhere around that range. This box is a terrific value considering the $29.95 price tag. If you enjoy experimenting with your makeup, this box would be perfect for you. I can't wait to see what future palettes have in store!

Thanks for reviewing with the makeup palette fully “on”. You’re my eye, hair, and skin twin, so it’s great to see exactly what it would look like. I LOVE this subscription. It’s hard to beat a full “face” of makeup in one compact palette. Last month was pretty, too, but I liked that I don’t normally choose purples and silvers, so this will be fun. GREAT review!

So pretty and not too bold at all. I think you could totally wear that as a daytime look. I’m not for the sparkle/glitter stuff BUT a little is ok. You have gorgeous hair BTW.

Thank you! That’s true about the sparkle — it isn’t too over the top in this silver shadow. Could totally work for day!

Great review- You look beautiful and application is fierce!

I just stopped this sub after the last palette as I found some products not to my liking. But overall it’s a nice option.

Really liked the ease of carrying a total look in one compact- except the lippies. I removed them & put in a smaller compact that has a better lid.

Thanks, Trisha! I also really love the convenience of having such a compact palette to toss in your bag. For me, it’s especially helpful with more dramatic hues that you may want to reapply throughout the day/evening more frequently!
