SCRIBEdelivery August 2017 Writing Subscription Box

The theme for August is 'Handwriting', which seems a kind of obvious theme for a pen subscription. They say it includes some of their favorite items, which will 'enable you to perfect, practice, or show off your best handwriting.'

I should note that the August box shipped a little later than usual due to a customs delay. Chad of SCRIBEdelivery kept everyone updated by email and on social media, even though the box only shipped slightly late and still arrived in the second week of August. I wish every subscription were so conscientious about shipping deadlines!

Pilot Birdy Stainless Steel Ballpoint Pen – Value $5.88 (marked ¥400)

This pen is so small! (Scroll back up to see how it looks next to the other items in the box.) This would be a great pen to slip into a tiny minaudière. As a lefty, ballpoint pens don't always work for me, but this one writes pretty well.

Tombow ABT Dual Brush Pen – Value $3.06

I've tried this water-based pen before and really like it. One side is a brush tip and the other side is a regular blunt tip. The brush tip was a little stiff at first, but after using it for a few minutes I was able to get more variation in the line. Letterers on Instagram do great things with this pen, but my poor calligraphy skills can't do it justice.

Write Pocket Ledger – Value $8.99

This ledger notebook is made from recycled materials and is printed with vegetable-based ink. For each notebook purchased, Write makes an unspecified donation to an inner city school. SCRIBEdelivery's description said there'd be a number on the inner cover that tells which specific school is benefited, but mine doesn't have that. This notebook is sturdy and I like the rubber band that holds it shut.

Write Pencil – Value $1 ($11.99 for 12)

The pencil is made by the Musgrave Pencil Company in Shelbyville, Tennessee, who normally sell their pencils for around $.25. These are the kinds of items I'm glad to have gotten in a subscription box because I probably wouldn't pay quite so much for them in a shop.

Hadron Epoch Ideas Curava Midnight Notebook – Value $20

This beautiful notebook is a sold-out limited edition, with half blank and half dot grid pages. It's bound in a way that lies flat easily. It is 'resistant to damage as well as water and oil (once it touches water, it dries within a few seconds without losing form and quality of the paper).' I've been wanting a dot grid notebook for work, and this one is a delight to use. Definitely the star of the box!

Verdict: My estimated retail value is $38.93, which is good for a $29 subscription. I've only had this box for a couple of days, but every item is already in use. The curation is a nice balance of aesthetics and utility. The Tombow pen inspired me to practice lettering again, and I especially love the Hadron Epoch notebook.

What do you think of August's SCRIBEdelivery box? Do you prefer notebooks to have plain paper, lines or a grid?

Does this company ever put out spoilers early enough to cancel/skip a month? Looking back at past reviews, I see some things I really like and some things I wouldn’t use at all.

I know what you mean about liking some past boxes more than others, but they don’t do spoilers. Pen boxes are surprisingly fun to get though; you might find yourself liking more than you expect.

I loved everything in this box especially the Midnight notebook. Easily one of my favorite things I get in the mail every month.

Glad you enjoyed it! The notebook really is beautifully done. Online, notebooks all look alike, but in person this one stands out.
