Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

Scentbird always sends a preview card for next month’s fragrance. For September, it is La Perla from La Mia Perla. This one is intriguing, as I think jasmine and sandalwood go nicely together. (There’s no information card specific to your chosen fragrance since those will differ for everyone.)
I never noticed this before, but the cardboard tube that holds the fragrance is now printed with instructions on how to insert and remove Scentbird vials from the case you receive with your first month’s subscription. This is a clever way to reduce the amount of paper that comes in the package!
Velvet Orchid by Tom Ford – Value $19.52 (buy 50 mL for $122)
I love this. I am pretty sure I added it to my queue after trying Black Orchid, which I also liked a lot. Base notes here include suede, myrrh, sandalwood, vanilla, labdanum, and Peru balsam. I am really liking the suede, sandalwood, and vanilla combination. Mid notes include a whole lot of florals (even very recognizable ones like rose and jasmine, though I am not picking them out individually). Top notes are honey, rum, mandarin, and bergamot. I am getting a little citrus vibe from this, and I also notice the sweetness of the honey. Apparently, I really like sugary sorts of perfumes.
Anyway, this is totally my kind of fragrance. Longevity seems good so far and sillage (basically how far the scent travels) is a bit stronger than expected, but not overwhelming.
Verdict: My fragrance this month has a value of $19.52. This is one of the first months that my choice has been much above the cost of the subscription, but of course you can maximize value by choosing expensive fragrances. My own strategy is to choose fragrances that I think will work for me, or sometimes new scents that sound interesting, and I love the one I got this month, so I’m happy!
