RescueBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs or cats. For dogs, choose from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). They are associated with Greater Good (the folks who brought you The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site, and more), and your purchase of a subscription will help provide food and vaccines to shelter pets!

Apparently you also get 30 free days of pet insurance with your subscription. I didn’t review all the details because there are usually exclusions with this type of service and Nyx is one big walking PREEXISTING CONDITION.

Rescue Box Venison Mini Sticks (3 oz) – Listed Value $8.99

I couldn’t find these for sale anywhere so I used the value from the information card. I have given Nyx venison in the past and she has done all right with it. There is not a full ingredients list here but these pretty much looked like freeze-dried meat or something like that, so I gave one piece to Nyx. So far, this morning, she’s not having stomach upset. She was SO EXCITED about getting a treat, I can’t even tell you. (See a picture below.)

Meaty Bone by RedBarn Pet Products (12.9 oz) – Value $5.89 (buy a box of 20 for $117.80)

This thing is huge. Sneaky (the household beef expert) really wanted it. She kept trying to get into the closed box. (She’s on prednisolone again for her asthma and it makes her kind of food-crazy.) It is a section of beef femur. This is a US-made product and is supposed to be good for dental health.

Cool Pup Cooling Towel – Value $6.97

Last year, cooling towels for people were in all the fitness boxes (and surprisingly, they work pretty well). This year, apparently they have been adapted for pet use. Nyx is a big, black dog and she definitely doesn’t like the heat, so this will definitely see some use. I just hope she doesn’t chew on it.

Doggy Incredibubbles - $3.46

Nyx doesn’t really understand bubbles – she tries to eat them (we’ve received this product before, in another subscription box). But maybe that is normal for dogs since these are peanut-butter flavored (and non-toxic). I get a little more mileage out of bubbles with my cats. I suspect whether your dog is interested in this item is more of an individual thing. I will get some use out of them either with Nyx or one of the cats, though.

Ice Hero Tug – Value $12

There is a part of this that comes out that you can fill with water and freeze. Ice is one of Nyx’s favorite things, so we will definitely be trying that soon. In the meantime, I let her play with it, sans ice, and she thought it was pretty great. She mostly focused on damaging or removing the rope, but she was unsuccessful. This thing is still in good shape after one session with her.

Here are some shots of Nyx with this month’s toy (well, that first one is her face upon getting one of the venison sticks). We haven’t had a chance to freeze it yet, but since it is still in one piece, that is up next.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $37.31 for August’s RescueBox. That is a pretty good value for this box, and well above the month-to-month cost of the subscription. Although Nyx can’t have the beef bone, it’ll be passed on to a dog in my extended family to enjoy, and she CAN have the treats, it seems. The cooling towel will be useful, the cats will appreciate the bubbles, and the toy was a success. This was a pretty good month for us.

Nyx is such a pretty dog. I love her picture with the treat, she looks so excited. Our German Shepard use to love bubbles, she’d try to catch them.
