The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box. There are also usually coupons and/or product literature.

Also, sorry for getting this review out for you all so late. I had oral surgery on the 13th and I was just unable to eat some of the items until the last few days. (Even then, there are a few I probably shouldn’t have tried but I was really, really wanting some non-soft food – I am so sick of yogurt and oatmeal and applesauce – so I dared it!)

Better than Coffee 70% Dark Chocolate and Coconut Bar (0.88 oz) – Value $1.89 (buy 12 bars for $22.69)

All right, this one was a fail for me.  It had a bitter flavor that I couldn’t quite place, and it was rock hard. I have been cutting bars like this with a knife so I can eat them in the back of my mouth, away from the surgery site, and I had to saw at this with a steak knife to even score it. (For what it’s worth, I found out from the company that they have changed recipes and they gave old bars to Vegan Cuts for the boxes.  I told them they shouldn’t do that and they seemed to take it well.)

Wai Lana Cassava Chips in Barbeque (1 oz) – Value $1.39

Um, these are delicious and they have a wonderful texture. I gained a whole bunch of weight when I was in college eating KC Masterpiece Lay’s potato chips and these have a similar flavor. They have a great crunch, too. They’re not particularly good for you, but they’re lower in sodium than I would have expected based on how they taste.

The Cookie Department Great Full Sweet Potato Cranberry and Oatmeal Cookie (1.5 oz) – Value $1.46 (buy a 12 pack of 3-ounce cookies for $34.95)

This is a really good packaged cookie. I just eat stuff from Vegan Cuts without reading the labels (other than checking calories) because I know it’s not going to have something in it I wouldn’t eat (I’m not vegan, but I am vegetarian). So I didn’t even realize until later that this had sweet potato in it. More importantly, the texture was absolutely amazing for a packaged cookie – soft and not crumbly. I am a fan!

Dandies All Natural Vanilla Marshmallows (2 oz) – Value $0.88 (buy a 12 pack of 10-ounce packages for $52.95)

I have been a fan of Dandies for years.  They taste just like marshmallows but have no gelatin. They are not *quite* the same as regular marshmallows – they’re a bit more difficult to melt, for example, so making Rice Krispie treats is harder, but not impossible – but they are darned close.  You can also roast them on bamboo skewers over a gas stovetop.

Kutoa Bar in Chocolate Banana (1.7 oz) – Value $2 (buy a 12 pack for $23.99)

This had a pleasant flavor where the banana was definitely apparent. It had a bit of a “rustic” texture, though. There were chia and flax seeds in it and I blame the chia – in bars, where it is dry, chia is always kind of gritty.

D’s Naturals No Cow Bar in Chocolate Fudge Brownie (2.12 oz) – Value $2.50 (buy a box of 12 for $29.99)

For a bar without any milk ingredients in it, this actually does a pretty good job of being smooth in consistency. It is also low in sugar, but you don’t really notice the lack of sugar.  I’ve had a few of these bars before in other flavors but I think this is one of the better flavors. (I love chocolate, though.)

Elmhurst Milked Hazelnuts (6 fl oz) – Value $1.12 (buy a 32-ounce carton for $5.99)

I’m not supposed to drink out of straws for awhile so I cut this open and put it in a smoothie.  It worked well that way, and tasted good, though I will probably stick to almond milk for cost purposes. Still, it is nice to try something a little exotic every now and then.

Joe’s Oat Patties in Portabella Mushroom (2.6 oz) – Value $2.71 (buy a 6-ounce bag for $6.25)

We’ve had these before from Vegan Cuts. Unfortunately, I have never been able to get these to work. I end up with something like savory oatmeal and not a patty. (I can only make patties of any kind from scratch with egg in them. If anyone has any suggestions to get patties like this to stick together, I’m all ears.)

Vegan Cuts Snack July 2017 Box

Pipcorn in Sea Salt and Vinegar (0.65 oz) – Value $0.81 (buy 4, 4-ounce bags for $20)

These are very small bits of popcorn that are supposed to not get stuck in your teeth. And that’s pretty much true. The flavor was very mild (although I’d tried the cassava chips just before, and those were pretty strong). I like the idea here, but in practice, these are a bit difficult to eat because of the size.

Popcorners in Salt of the Earth (1 oz) – Value $0.88 (buy a 40-count case for $35)

I have always received the kettle corn flavor of this in the past and there was something I didn’t like about the sweetness there paired with a corn chip. I always thought I might like other flavors better, and I’m happy to say that I was correct after trying these. (I totally shouldn’t have eaten these, the periodontist would not be happy with me, but I broke them into small pieces and that seemed to work.)

Vegan Cuts Snack July 2017 Box

Rawfusion in Vanilla Bean (1 serving) – Value $1.23 (buy a 15-serving container for $18.50)

I like getting protein powder in subscription boxes – I never have to buy it. I put this in my smoothie this morning and I feel that it blended better and also tasted better than a lot of other plant-based proteins I’ve tried lately.

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix (6 g) – Value $2 (buy 10 packets for $19.99)

I like hot cocoa, and I also like hot cocoa with hot pepper in it, but there was something earthy going on here because of the mushrooms that just didn’t work for me. (I hate mushrooms, though. I know they’re good for you but if I am going to get mushroom nutrients, it’s going to have to be in pill form.)

Vegan Cuts Snack July 2017 Box

Made in Nature Tropical Fusion (1 oz) – Value $1.40 (buy a 5-pack for $6.99)

I like this brand a lot; you often see their products in RawBox. This trail mix was new to me. It has lots of fun tropical dried fruit like banana, mango, and pineapple, plus some cocoa nibs. The pieces are very small so it’s a bit difficult to eat with your fingers, but this would go great in homemade granola or as a cereal topping.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $20.27 for this month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box. Although that’s a little below the month-to-month cost of the box, it is within about $3 and this was a better box for me than in other months because there were more items that were completely new to me, as well as a few things I absolutely loved (cassava chips, Dandies, cookie).

Glad you can finally eat some normal foods again.I’m stuck on the liquid/soft foods diet until end of September if everything goes as planned. My family has been very helpful in “helping” me eat my monthly snack boxes.Oral Surgery isn’t fun and doesn’t heal fast.

I am lucky, my gum grafts were around my bottom two front teeth, and the site where they took the graft tissue from was on the top left, so I can chew things on the back right without much difficulty, as long as the pieces are small, especially now that the dressing is off. I won’t be biting into anything for awhile, though. Actually, the top left is getting better, too, I didn’t have any problems with that.

I had to go to the ER for excessive bleeding on the graft site in the middle of the night following the surgery. Then I was afraid to brush my teeth or rinse my mouth for a few days. But I got over that and I am slowly getting back to normal.
