Pet Gift Box is a monthly subscription with themed treats and toys for your dog or cat.

This is a review of the large dog, or “Hefty Hound” version for $30.00 per month, though there are other subscription levels that start at $25.00 per month. For reference, my dog Nyx is a Rottweiler who weighs about 87 pounds.

There was also some promotional literature for a TV show called Downward Dog that aired on ABC. As far as I can tell, it was canceled earlier in June.

Downward Dog Tennis Ball – Value $1.50?

This is promotional merchandise for the TV show. I can’t find anywhere to buy this so I just took an average value for tennis ball toys for dogs from Amazon. Nyx does love tennis balls. She can fit two in her mouth, and her goal in life is to be able to do three (not sure she will get there or not, but it is fun to watch her try).

GiGwi Push to Mute Ball with Strap – Value $4.94

You are supposed to be able to push the black part into the ball, which stops the squeaking. This was too hard for me to do but I did manage to hurt my thumb while trying (it bled…). Nyx had fun with this, but she didn’t understand it. She wanted to chew on the strap. Then she removed the strap (and the black part) completely.

Hickory Smoked Tail Wagger (Beef Rib Bone) – Value $2.99?

This was Pet GiftBox branded, and they don’t sell individual items in their shop, so I used the value from what appears to be a similar item. Single-ingredient treats are great for dogs with food issues. (Unfortunately, beef is out for Nyx, but she is a special case.) Do pay close attention to your dog while he or she has this. For what it’s worth, it didn’t smell through the plastic.

Yopup Happy Belly7 oz – Value $5.99

These are wheat-free, which is again great for dogs with food issues (wheat is a common dog allergen). These are drizzled with yogurt and contain probiotics. They are also made in the USA, which is super important for dog treats.

Downward Dog Folding Bowl – Value $7?

This is more promotional merchandise for the TV show, but it is also a functional item. I have seen similar items going elsewhere for $5-9, so I took an average. Nyx can’t really travel for a variety of reasons, but I know people who take their dogs camping and hiking and will pass it along to one of them.

Downward Dog Fetch Flyer – Value $2?

Again, you can’t buy these anywhere, so I took a value from a similar item. Nyx doesn’t understand the way frisbee toys are supposed to work, but she likes to gnaw on them (which I let her do until she damaged this…).

Here are some shots of Nyx with the ball/strap toy:

Nyx didn’t understand this toy and just wanted to chew on the strap. Then she wanted to play tug, which made the button and strap come out (see above). Then she sat there poking her tongue into the hole that was left in the ball from the removal of the button and making funny and semi-disgusting squelching noises…

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $24.42 for the June Pet GiftBox for dogs. That is pretty close to the month-to-month cost of the box, and since I had to estimate a lot of values, the MSRP could be a little higher. I see in this box the kind of planning that has to go into subscription box items months in advance–this was probably already in the mail around the time the television show was canceled (on June 24), and no one associated with PetGiftBox could have predicted that. Overall, I thought the mix of items was good for summertime with a dog (outdoor play, travel, etc.). I’m a little disappointed that half the box was promotional merchandise, though, but at least the items are useful.

What do you think of the June Pet GiftBox?  Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?

I just appreciate the writing that made me laugh today… semi-disgusting squelching noises. I don’t exactly know what that sounds like, but I sure hope I get to use that phrase one day.

I really enjoyed Downward Dog, but it didn’t “fit” as an ABC show. Hopefully it finds a home on another network.

I saw this red box scrolling at top of screen and thought it was a Christmas box! HA HA

I think you were supposed to hold the strap and she pulls on the ball part. (less painful for you) cute pics of her tho!

Yeah, I mentioned in the review that Nyx didn’t understand the toy. She immediately goes to whatever will be most destructive.
