ModCloth Stylish Surprise

A few times a year, ModCloth announces their “Stylish Surprise”, where they sell select mystery items you at a deep discount. We're talking typically pricier pieces for around $10-$20! Stylish Surprise is kind of like the Mystery Bags I would periodically get at the candy store I used to g to as a kid. You choose the category and select the size, but otherwise, you don't know what you will receive until it arrives in the mail; hence the surprise! It can be a bit of a gamble because you can get anything from their wide range of styles and aesthetics, but that is the fun of it all!

Stylish Surprise sells out incredibly fast! I went onto their site a few hours after it was announced and apartment, shoes, and accessories were all sold out at that point. As of this morning, Stylish Surprise is still available in Apparel, sizes XS-4X, and Dresses sizes XS-L. The great thing about Stylish Surprise, though, is there always seems to be another one right around the corner.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes)

As with normal ModCloth orders, the box (or bag in my case) comes with an invoice, though it gives you the price you paid for the Stylish Surprise itself; not the original cost of the items you get. I ended up getting just a dress this time around. I wish I had been on the site just a smidge earlier to partake in the shoe Stylish Surprise, but hey that is the breaks! The early bird gets the worm, or the Stylish Surprise in this case!

Mod Cloth Stylish Surprise Dress in a 3x—Cost $20, Value $69.99

Holy smokes! I have never done Stylish Surprise because I figured I would end up getting something I would be totally indifferent about, but I really adore this dress! The only issue I have with it is I couldn’t really wear my bra since the dress is a bit too snug. The fabric is mainly cotton with some spandex, but it wasn’t terribly stretchy. I could have stood to go up to a 4x in retrospect. Otherwise, I am very fond of this dress and the very 70s mustard yellow color they choose. This dress is very sassy and ideal for the summer. I paired it with sea foam jellies and my favorite green scarf because I love the color combination of the three. I found the same dress by Ixia in black and other colors/patterns for $69.99, so I saved $49.99 with this Stylish Surprise! What a steal!

Did I happen to mention this dress has pockets? That is the cherry on top for me!

I really also love the back tie detail too. It is such a preciously cute touch. It really adds to the retro vibe. It kind of makes me want to put on my saddle shoes and go to a malt shop for a Strawberry milkshake!

Verdict: I am really happy with my first ever Stylish Surprise. Even though my dress is a bit tight, I am definitely keeping it; it is just too cute and too great of a bargain not to! The only thing I regret is not getting anything in the apparel group because it is such a fantastic deal and to size up the next time. I can’t wait for the next Stylish Surprise!

Darlene

I ordered 2 dresses 2 apparel.. I received two wedding dresses, one weird shirt and one tank top. Who needs TWO wedding dresses? And they don’t even fit 🙁 so disappointed

Nicole Rieder

Oh, Darlene! That is a bummer. Maybe you can sell or swap the wedding dresses?

Alex

I got 2 wedding dresses too!!! Haha! They’re too big 😆

Nicole Rieder

That is wild! They must have a surplus of themy! Dang!

Alex

I did 4 dresses and 4 apparel. I usually wear a 3xl but I got 2xl this time and everything was still big. AND! I got 2 wedding dresses. Hahahaaa. And one dress that looks just like a bridesmaid dress. I was really laughing over the wedding dresses.

Everything was a bust. The other dress is okay. It’s black and perfect for a funeral. I got a thick acrylic grey sweater/cardigan, and a soft tank top with an anchor on it. The anchor tank is the only item I won’t swap or sell.

Although, if I do finally get married (I’ve been engaged forever) I have a dress for the ceremony and for the reception that just need alterations.

I would still do stylish surprise again though.

Oh, man! Well, at least you have a potential wedding dress you spent $20 on. That isn’t too bad. But what a bummer so few of the pieces worked, Alex! I do think Modcloth is trying to push you down the aisle with the Stylish Surprise, though! Hahahaha.

First of all, THANK YOU!!! I had zero idea this surprise box was a thing! SO exciting!! This dress is a great color for you, and hello….POCKETS!!! The snug boob situation is one that I am totally familiar with. I love that you paired it with some jellies! Perfect for summer! Man, you are such a beauty! OXOXO

Nicole Rieder

Awe thank you, Jennifer for all the sweet words.

Before American Apparel closed I kind of stock piled on jellies. They are my favorite summer shoes!

As for Stylish Surprise– I am so glad I could inform you about it! It is pretty neat!

I always choose 4X for stylish surprise, even though I would be a 2X or 3X depending on the garment in most Modcloth’s house brand, because they make no effort to translate those sizes to other brands. The first time I tried I bought a 3X mystery dress, and ended up with a My Little Pony printed mini skater dress which would have been barely an XL on Modcloth’s own size chart, despite the label. I contacted customer service but they didn’t care.

So this time I ordered a 4X apparal and dress, and got a cheap tshirt and a dress which fits and is fine, but the ugliest thing I think they’ve ever sold. It seems the cute Modcloth stuff factor taps out at 3X.

I should just stop trying! But somehow, I can’t.

Awe, well it is hard to not resist trying at the price. But oh man, that is brutal about what you received in the past!

Love it! You look like it was made for you. So cute!

Anna

The dress looks great on you & it would be darling in the Fall/ Winter seasons with a high necked or possibly a collered form fitting blouse under it. It’s the best when the Stylish Surprise actually is stylish (surprise!!!). 🙂

Nicole Rieder

Sorry. Got cut off. Dang phone. Since it is super snug, I sense I would just pair mine with a cardigan, textured tights, and booties. But I love the white collared top underneath of it. That would be great!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Yes, that would totally look adorable. In my case, since it is so

My SS was awesome! None of the pieces were “my style” but all fit well and looked great on. Such a fun way to broaden my wardrobe.

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Oh, definitely! It is always fun to get a piece you may have never thought to try like that! Glad you are having fun with the Stylish Surprise, Ks!

Julie

That’s so cute! After a successful foray into getting stylish surprise apparel (a navy coat and cream sweater) and shoes (gold peep-toe pumps), I broke down and ordered a dress. Hope I’m as lucky as you!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Julie, those gold peep toe pumps sound exquisite! I hope you had as much luck as me too!

Tammy

I love your entire look, Nicole! Where did you get your awesome glasses?

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Thank you, Tammy! They are from Bonlook.com! They come in four different colors!

Ali

Yay! I got two dresses – one L, one XL since I seem to fall in either camp depending on the maker – and I got this dress too! When I opened the box and saw the color/texture I thought it wasn’t going to be for me. It’s actually perfect! That pin up style is great. I plan to wear with tights and a cardigan once the weather turns – it’s a perfect color for fall. I love the way you styled this for Summer!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole Rieder

Ali, I am glad you were pleased with your Stylish Surprise and this dress too! I thought it was so adorable! And you are right, it would pair great for fall with a lot of jewel tone pieces and tights. I am all for pieces that are adaptable and able to be worn through out the seasons!
