This month, the reverse side has a summer fun crossword puzzle!
Onward to the items!
Karma Wellness Water, 18 oz - Value $1.98 (Get 12 for $23. 74 on Amazon)
So this water is kinda fun, because you get to push a little button in the cap that releases a powder into the spring water containing flavor along with vitamins A, E, D and B. The flavor I got is Açai Pomegranate, and it doesn't taste half bad. Anything that says it's "low calorie" scares me because that inevitably means it has a weird sugar substitute or otherwise yucky ingredient that I don't want to drink. Even though I prefer regular water through and through, this is an easy way to get essential vitamins into your body while hydrating.
Vermont Smoke & Cure Beef & Pork Stick in Cracked Pepper, 2 x 1 oz. sticks - Total Value $2.60 (get a case of 24 on Amazon for $31.14)
I am a fan of jerky, beef sticks, et al.These cracked pepper flavor meat sticks are made from beef and pork that are vegetarian fed and raised without antibiotics or added hormones from the US and Canada. These are certainly better than a most grocery store jerky brands, and I like the slightly spicy pepper flavor.
Kala Beautiful Beans in Tropical Curry, 5 oz. - Value $9.47 (found on Amazon)
Daaaang, these are over $9 a bag? I'm glad Degustabox included a full size of these because they are really tasty! At first, I thought these roasted fava beans tasted "too healthy", but this one was a bit of a grower on me. The more I eat, the more I like the muted flavor, and the curry later creeps up on you. As always, I am happy with anything that has an ingredient list I can understand.
King Arthur Essential Goodness Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix, 16 oz. - Value $4.34
This month, this chocolate chip cookie mix comes with a helping hand. For each box of "Essential Goodness" by King Arthur that you, they will donate one meal through Feeding America to help the millions of people suffering from hunger in the United States. Even better, there is no limit, and they guarantee to donate at least one million meals each year. That sounds as good as these cookies look: Fantastic!
Goya Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 8.5 oz. - Value $5.94
Extra virgin olive oil, or EVOO, is my preferred cooking oil to use. When I'm making meal kits 2-3 times a week, I go through quite a bit. I'm happy to see this Goya product in the box and was glad it was wrapped well so it didn't break in transit.
Mutti Tomato Sauce, 14 oz. - Value $1.77 (Get a case of 12 for $21.19 on Amazon)
The brand Mutti and I got acquainted back in May via Degustabox, and I didn't know what to do with their finely chopped tomatoes until a helpful community member (Hey, Vianny!) told me I could simply use it as a sauce (It was delicious!). This month they've included a can of classic tomato sauce with a booklet welcoming all of their products to America for the first time. Ciao, Mutti! I just learned how to easily make a killer pizza sauce via Blue Apron, so I'll probably use this to do so!
Wise Cinnabon Popcorn, 2 x 0.5 oz. bags - Total Value $0.45 (Buy a 5.5 oz. bag for $2.49 at Target)
Wise, you sneaky, sneaky snackers. How'd you know that Cinnabons are my most beloved garbage food? The ONLY Cinnabon anywhere near me is at the Pittsburgh Airport. Anytime I fly in or out of there, I have to get a ceremonial Cinnabon that I immediately regret eating. This popcorn is slightly less intense but really nails the "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO SWEET" factor of the actual cinnamon bun slathered in frosting. Crap, now I'm looking up the cheapest one-way ticket so I can gain entry to the airport...
Wise 30% Reduced Fat Sea Salt Popcorn, 2 x 0.5 oz. bags - Total Value $0.45 (Buy a 5.5 oz. bag for $2.49 at Target)
Of course, I have to switch to the reduced fat version of popcorn after eating those Cinnabon ones. These have 10 less calories per bag than the Cinnabon flavor as well. This plain sea salt popcorn is good, but I think I'd still rather pop some the old fashioned way with coconut oil if I'm feeling the urge.
Mrs. Thinster's Cookie Thins in Brownie Batter, 4 oz. - Value $4.39
Don't get me wrong, I like cookies, and I like chocolate, but I'm not into thin crispy cookies. I also usually prefer to break up my chocolate a little. These are almost TOO chocolatey if that's a thing. At least they don't contain artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. They also don't contain corn syrup, if that is a concern for you.
Waffle Waffle Buttery Vanilla Waffle, 2.75 oz. - Listed Value $1.79
I was unable to find this online, (brand is simply "Waffle Waffle," so it's tricky to search for), so I noted the value given by Degustabox.
Do you see how many times I typed out the word "Waffle" above? Kooky. I dunno. This waffle is moist and a good size, but it's really just too sweet for me. I don't know if fresh baked goods should be packaged like this to eat in the car or what have you. It may be better if I put it in the toaster, but it'd still be an ("Authentic Pearl") sugar rush.
RXBAR, coupon for 1 free 1.83 oz. bar - Value $2.06 (Buy a case of 12 for $24.69 on Amazon)
The last item comes in the form of a coupon to bring to your nearest retailer to redeem for an RXBAR. It also came with a coupon to get 20% off your first order of these bars from their website. The reviews on Amazon are pretty amazing (4 out of 5 stars with 1,802 reviews). I've dabbled in protein bars now and again, and my favorite are probably Kind Bars. I'm not sure if I'll remember to redeem this coupon. I kind of wish they would've just tossed one in the box to cut out the middleman (me). Good to note: there is a list of stores on the flip side of the 20% off coupon that has Trader Joe's in the mix, but then says you won't be able to use the free bar coupon there. Drat. Giant Eagle, Whole Foods, and Target will though (among others), and all of those are near me.
Verdict: This Degustabox was super snacky this month, but on the healthier side of things (not you, Cinnabon Popcorn). I think this month made me realize that I enjoy the "pantry" items of Degustabox more so than the snacks, so I am always longing for more pasta and pesto like I got back in May. The Kala fava beans, meat sticks, and olive oil win this round, and the waffle and cookie thins were a total miss. After all is said and done, I valued this box at about $33, not counting the RXBAR coupon since I may never actually redeem it ($35 if you want to include it). Since the cost of this box is $19.99, the value is there, but you must gamble with what you receive, as always.
Was this month's Degustabox a hit or miss with you?
