Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Play! by Sephora
3.8 overall rating

Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning. I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

Sephora recently released a special The Iconic Edition box that was exclusive for VIB Rouges (the highest status level in their points program). This was a one-time purchase and not a monthly subscription.

FYI: This box is now sold out.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

This box came with an information, well, book! It really is a miniature book with details about the products and the Iconic theme plus tips related to the included products and creating your own “iconic” look for yourself.

There are even “chapters.” Chapter 2 is, “What’s Your Iconic Beauty Style?”

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

It has a little quiz asking about your most-worn makeup products, how much time your daily makeup routine takes, your favorite way to amp up a look, etc.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Based on your answers your style is categorized into one of four labels: Retro Glam, Free Spirit, Poised and Polished, or Edgy and Electric. In case you’re interested, I got 3 A’s, 3 B’s, and 2 Cs.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Chapter 3 has some little tips to “be iconic in any occasion.”

And that’s the whole book! In fact, there’s even a place for you to write your name in the back of the book.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

This The Iconic Edition bag included with a limited edition, gold bag containing your samples.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Guerlain L’Or Pure Radiance Face Primer - .16 fl oz, Value $10.76

I haven’t tried many Guerlain products so I was really excited to try this primer! It’s a “radiance concentrate with pure gold” in it. It works really well! It is very light (a gel-like formula), and a little goes a long way. It dries down to slightly tacky, too, so it really hold onto your makeup or powder overtop. It’s a great primer!

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream - .24 oz, Value $40.80

Wow, this La Mer sample has a great value! It’s a lightweight cream that is meant to help dryness, dullness, uneven texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. It looks like it has some great ingredients for your skin, too. I liked the feel of this cream, but I’ve only used it for one night and morning and can’t speak to any longer term effects.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

I do have to say that this cream has a slightly perfumey scent, which is a little bit of a turn off for me but it’s not too bad and I don’t personally have sensitive skin that would be bothered by it, either.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Burberry Cat Lashes Mascara - .11 fl oz, Value $16.50

This is a new favorite for me! Again, this is a new product to me and I love it. The brush shape makes it really easy to get all my lashes and the formula has nice pigment. I experienced zero clumping and increased volume. I’ve also had no issues with it smudging under my eyes at all.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick LipstickBright Strawberry Pink – .05 oz?, Value $12.33

Another new product for me, but I love this lipstick! It’s a bright shade in the tube, but it comes off much more wearable once applied. And the formula is amazing. It’s described as an “oil-in stick, medium-coverage lipstick,” which I think describes it perfectly. It has medium pigment with plenty of hydrating and conditioning slick. It feels light and really comfortable! The full size is $37 which is definitely on the pricey end for lipstick – so of course I’d fall in love with it, ha!

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Dior Poison Girl - .17 oz, Value $7.80

First of all, I adore getting these little miniature bottles of perfume in subscription boxes! I actually have a collection because I think they’re so cute and it’s just a nice portion of product! This fragrances is warm, gourmande, and a little spicy. Notes include orange, sensual flowers, tonka bean, and vanilla. This is sweet and balanced and not too young – I like it!

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Tom Ford Black Orchid - .1 fl oz, Value $7.20

This is a classic fragrance, the notes of which include black truffle, ylang-ylang, bergamot, black currant, black orchid, black iris, black plum, lotuswood, coconut, cinnamon, balsam, and vanilla.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

This is quite a strong perfume. In my time working at Sephora I also found that it is a bit of a polarizing scent, too. Personally, it’s not too bad but I do feel like it smells pretty licorice-y to me. And on my body chemistry, it leans a little cough drop. I do love the packaging of this deluxe sample – perfect for your purse! However, this scent is just not my fragrance style.

Sephora VIB Rouge Box June 2017

Here I am wearing the primer, YSL lipstick, and the Burberry mascara! I also used the La Mer moisturizer before applying my makeup, too.

Verdict: I had so much fun with this The Iconic Edition Play! by Sephora box! I found a bunch of new (but expensive, sigh…) favorites thanks to this. It’d be fun to see more limited Edition Play boxes in the future. I love the more high-end brands and larger sample sizes. The value of this box adds up to $95.39 (not including any value for the bag) – I’m absolutely happy with that for just $20!

I’m so upset! I ordered this and they sent me some sort of Clinique powder instead. When I called to tell them they told me they were sold out and they were sorry. Ugh.

Did you get your money back? I hope so. I would think you should get your money back and something on the house. I hear Sephora loves to solve order problems with giving out 50 points here and there when it comes to the subscription boxes. that’s without a refund or backorder.

Whenever you order something online it should be in stock. If they sold too many then they need to solve the problem PLUS give you something for your time wasted. What a bummer.

If anyone has one they do not want, I would love to take it off your hands! Or if you could order one for me, I have paypal and could send you some goodies as well for the help. 🙂 My email is beccajrichardson at gmail, I’m also on the swap site – just click my name!

Your lashes look amazing! Now I will have to search out Burberry. The lip color is surprisingly wearable. I always love your reviews!

Thank you so much!

Laura

OMG!! Your lashes look Amazing!! I can’t wait to try my Burberry mascara tomorrow! I hope they come out like yours did! Do you know how much the full size version would be?

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

Agreed, your lashes look wonderful. Did you apply mascara to your bottom lashes or just liner? I normally don’t put mascara on my bottom lashes because they are so pale and rather sparse, but long. But I love the look you’re rocking here!

Reply ButtonReply

Haley Faye

Michelle, I always only put mascara on my bottom lashes and never liner unless I’m amping up an evening look. ☺️ That’s just what works for me, to help my eyes look wider/open. Everyone’s eyes/style is different, too, so if you prefer just liner with the way your lashes are then go for it.

Haley Faye

Laura, the full size is $30.

AmyM

Oh my goodness! Your lashes look INCREDIBLE with that mascara. Can’t wait to try it. I’m so happy I ordered this. It was really fun to open everything and that book is gorgeous; they spent some money on that. I’d be on board with this as a monthly sub.

Lola

I would happily spend $20 a month on a box like this. You don’t need much La Mer and I personally think you will see change with the sample they sent. I always have. That primer is intriguing. Oh how I wish I had been eligible.

Luna

I love your nail polish color Hayley. 🙂 Shades that lean toward gray or have hints of gray in them have been my favorites recently. Thanks for the great review too!

Thank you! It’s actually one I just got from Julep. ☺️

Wowser….those lashes!!! You have solved my falsie issues for life!! Ordering mascara asap 😍😍😍

These are my thoughts/speculations.

I think that is going to happen-be a monthly box that is. I think they are going to change it up and up the price.

May’s box was on the 500-pt rewards and sold out pretty quick, as did the Iconic.
Sephora will also get “paid” feed back from Rouges about being a monthly, etc. Rouge reviews tend to be brutally honest.

I am so curious to see where this is going.

Maybe Macy’s beauty box is going to give them a run for their money. That being said I hope the Iconic will be for everyone at the same price of $15. monthly.

I was one of the people in the “test group” to try the play box when it first came out. I also received a survey on a higher end, more expensive sub and what my thoughts were on it…it was within the last 3-6 months I believe. I said I think it’s a great idea and I would pay $15 to $20 for it (it had options for what would you pay) I’m rouge and although I got the email for this box, I chose not to get it because I had a feeling the ysl would be a lipstick and I knew the burberry would be that cat lashes mascara (I got that free not long ago from Burberry, no purchase necessary), I also can’t wear many perfumes because of migraines so since it had 2 perfumes, I decided it wasn’t worth it for me. It does look like a great box though

Jen

Hey Christi, thanks for giving us some insider info on what maybe going on with this!! Very awesome of you- definitely keep us in the loop if you get anymore emails about what might be going on 🙂 I am VERY interested!!

El

These sound like amazing products! Though $20 still seems like a bit much for sample sizes (though they are deluxe). I wish it was offered to us non-Rouge members. I feel like it should be max of $10 for Rouge and I’d be willing to pay $15 as a non-Rouge.

Andrea

The sticker on the back of my box said something to the effect of “JUNE 2017 LUXE” so maybe they will continue! I bought two and tried the La Mer last night (my main reason for getting it) and my husband loved the scent. My face felt so good in the morning! D@%# you Sephora. Just take all my money.

Dea

Good to see a beauty review from you again, Haley! You disappeared for a while, and I was worried you’d left MSA.

Reply ButtonReply

Haley Faye

Dea – aw, thank you! I’ve been in this for 3.5 years – not going anywhere soon. 😉 Although I am due with my second baby in October so I may quiet down around then. Thanks so much for reading!

Beautyluv88

Congrats hayley! I am due in august myself with a baby girl! ☺

Bonnie

I noticed your absence too…I assumed it was maternity leave. Hope you and the baby are doing great!

Allison

I ordered two of these Iconic boxes. There was no shipping information. Only one box arrived. I have no idea if the other one is coming or where the other parts of my order are.

Last night Sephora actually called me and said the Iconic boxes are shipping separate from other items in the same order. It’s so confusing. I certainly get the sense they are in the prototype stage of some master plan.

Reply ButtonReply

Lyla Thomas

I just received a second one and only ordered one! The first one had free samples in it but they had called me and told me those would be shipping separately so I was expecting this box to just have samples. It had samples…and another Play box! What the heck?! I called and they said just keep it. I mean, I am not mad at that…I freaking LOVE the primer and Poison Girl.

I am, Jacinda! How do I find you?

Adele

Thanks for the great review! I hadn’t even read through my booklet yet, I was too excited to start playing with everything. I’m going to do the quiz when I get home. I hope they make this a monthly box, I would pay for it as long as they don’t start repeating products or variations that don’t make sense like the currently Play box.

Reply ButtonReply

Ann

I agree about the variations in Sephora Play. Notice how well this box works for so many when it does not include hair products or makeup in skin tones. I think Sephora is trying by having us fill out profiles but it still isn’t working out. I have straight hair with concerns for dryness and color preservation. I am getting my umpteenth can of dry shampoo this month in Play. I changed my profile to curly and anti-frizz to try to get different products.

Reply ButtonReply

Anna

Agree, if they offered a monthly box like this I would sub in a heartbeat.

Reply ButtonReply

Amy

I loved this box. Although, and I know this is a little nit picky, I feel like this is the sort of thing we should have received for free. I just don’t really feel like I get anything special for spending so much at Sephora. I mean, anyone can have the 2 day shipping now for just $10. And everyone gets the same birthday gifts. I don’t know. I just don’t really feel like there’s an advantage to being Rouge (this coming from someone who has been Rouge for 3 years).

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

Totally agree. I buy everything I can at Ulta because their points system is unbelievably good. Sephora needs to step up their game – more of my money definitely goes to Ulta.

Reply ButtonReply

Cornflake

YEP! Definitely on the points. I like that, even though you can’t use coupons on them, you can still use your rewards on the nicer stuff. 🙂 And they do add up quickly.

Amy

Actually, the more I think about it, I’d be totally on board for paying $20 and this be the caliber of the monthly play box.

Reply ButtonReply

Meg Williams

Amy, I agree about the Sephora VIB Rouge program. It seems the perks aren’t much better than being a VIB. The exception is the free complete make-overs that you normally have to spend $50 in merchandise to get. Their private holiness #, which I think I’ve used twice in the 5 years I’ve been Rouge. That being said, this box was totally worth the $20.00. I’d be willing to spend that every month if we received the samples similar to those contained in the Limited Edition box. I haven’t been too thrilled with my last couple of Sephora Play! boxes. This month I received 2 primers. This was a nice box and I like the fact that it was for VIB Rouge only. A lot of times things will be sold to VIB Rouge members and then within a day or so, anyone can buy them. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s nice that everyone has a chance to purchase the items. I just wish there were more perks to being Rouge.
