Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

I do have to mention, you can walk in and get shown any tips and even a “mini makeover” at the Beauty Studio (which is where a consultant will do a small demo on you like a certain eye look, how to do your brows, how to contour, matching you with a foundation, etc. and teach you what they’re doing) anytime – with or without a Play pass! So, if you don’t have this subscription (or can’t get off the waitlist), you can still go to your local Sephora and try out all the products featured, or any other products.

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

This month’s theme is “Beat the Heat,” and the booklet featured tips for summer.

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

On the very inside of the folded info sheet is thorough details and tips about each featured product. They always give helpful information and advice so I definitely recommend making sure you read these!

Verb Sea Spray – 2.4 oz, Value: $7

I’ve never tried anything from VERB before. This spray has seaweed and kelp extract to help add texture. I love the way this spray smells!

If you’ve read my beauty reviews before, you probably already know I’m not particularly excited for a sea salt spray in my box. However, they seem to pop up at least once in just about every subscription in the summer months so maybe I should get over it. My gripe with sea salt sprays is just that they don’t work well for me – my hair is so incredibly stick straight and fine that there’s nothing for a sea salt spray to work with. No amount of sea salt will add any kind of beachy wave to my hair, especially when I have it long like I do now. When I have it cut short I have enough layers to play with it, maybe. The Sephora Play! booklet says you can use this before blow-drying for some extra volume, so I’ll have to try it like that – some of the reviews say great things about this method on Sephora’s product page!

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk – 1 oz, Value: $10

Klorane’s Dry Shampoo is another item that’s common in subscription boxes, but I’m okay with that! I use dry shampoo all the time and like Klorane’s natural formula. My usual dry shampoo is Batiste, and I find that this does leave less of a white splotch to brush out while still working well. It smells good, adds texture, and helps extend my style!

Coola Makeup Setting Spray with Green Tea & Aloe - .34 fl oz, Value: $7.20

SPF 30 in a setting spray is a fantastic idea. Coola’s formula is 70% organic and contains green tea and aloe to soothe irritation and refresh your skin! My daily CC cream has SPF in it, but I actually love keeping minis of these Coola sprays in my bag. If we end up going out to the park with my kid or whenever I end up in the sun for a bit, I can just reach in my bag and spray this refreshing mist and feel a little more protected. I don’t think I’d personally recommend this as your only source of daily SPF (because I’m generally pretty paranoid/anal about wearing solid SPF daily), but I’m not an expert myself.

Benefit The POREfessional - .1 fl oz, Value: $4.80

A classic Benefit product! This is Benefit’s signature primer, and it’s designed to minimize the look of pores, smooth your complexion, and the other usual primer duties of helping you need less foundation per application and help it stay on your skin much better. This is a primer I use all the time, especially thanks to the fact that it’s also pretty common in subscriptions, but I’m happy with the formula and performance!

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick - .1 fl oz, Value: $9.09

This is my absolute favorite brand and formula of liquid lipstick so I was thrilled to see it in my box this month! I got the shade Lovesick, which is one I’ve already bought. The formula goes on opaque, dries matte and stays for quite a long time! It’s smudge-proof and doesn’t come off when I kiss my husband or son.

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

This shade is a mauve-nude and is easy to wear and works great with any complexion!

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

Here it is on me. It’s a fantastic everyday shade I keep in my purse because I use it all the time.

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

BVLGARI Omnia Crystalline Eau de Toilette – 1.5 ml sample vial

This perfume is a fresh, light, and feminine fragrance. Notes include Bamboo, Nashi, Lotus Flower, and Balsa wood.

Sephora Play! June 2017 Beauty Subscription Box

I like it alright but with my skin chemistry, it turns a little soapy to me.

Verdict:  All in all, I really liked my June Play! by Sephora box! I’m hoping I can make the sea salt spray work for me as a pre-blow-dry product, and everything else is a win for me already. The value this month adds up to $38.09, which I’m happy with for $10!

I’m subscribed to Play! by Sephora (my first long lasting subscription so far) and this was not the box I received. I actually like more my box than this one. I’m currently using all my samples. I received:

Benefit The POREfessional Face Primer
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick
Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50
DevaCurl SUPERCREAM Coconut Curl Styler
Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Coconut & Moringa Oils Curl Whip Styling Souffle
Versace Bright Crystal

I received the same bag. But I’m not a fan of it.

That was my box.
Happy to have received KVD lippie,, but when I will stop getting dry shampoos in my boxes? Hate them ugh.

ReneeH

I love dry shampoo but I’m sick of getting primers! I got 2 in this box and I don’t even wear foundation.

To the writer of the review: you could shower, put the sea salt spray in your hair, then put your hair in braids to dry out, then undo the braids to see if that helps with some extra beachyness. I’m guessing even if you had ultra straight hair, that might still work.

Sooooo glad I got the same liquid lipstick as you! I’ve had tons of liquid lipstick samples come my way, but none have been colors Im comfortable wearing. But this one is that exact my lips but better mauve color! It was the only item in the box I could/will us… redeeming for my June box!

I wish I would have received this shade of the KVD lippie, it’s so pretty! Mine is like neon hot pink…so bright and a bit obnoxious! I could pull it off if I were blonde, but I have bright auburn hair! Will be be swapping that plus my Porefessional. I have so many of those.

I’m so mad that the Coola product has aloe! I really need a way for subscription boxes to let us mark our allergies 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

And I can’t use it because of the chemical sunscreen ingredients. Just a terrible product overall for sensitive skin 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

JuJu

Interesting, I didn’t even know that aloe can cause an allergic reaction…

Reply ButtonReply

Amy

I’m allergic as well. I feel your pain

Krissie

NO WAY?!?! I thought we all received that same neon pink / purple shade (K-Dub) of the KVD! I LOVE the Lovesick. Totally wish I’d received that!

Which box did you get?

I am so upset I didn’t get these items in June. Out of 5 items they sent me 3 for thick curly hair. I have fine straight hair. So does my entire family, so can’t even give it away. Ugh.

I got the same box and all in all a good month! I’ll use everything but the dry shampoo. I’m old school and wash my hair every other day

I would infinitely have preferred this box to #091. I actually e-mailed Sephora to find out what the hell happened this month with not looking at profiles AT ALL and only having one makeup product. If I wanted nothing but skin and hair care, I’d get Birchbox

Carrie

What was their response to your email?

Diana

I received the same box, and while it’s not the most interesting, I will say I have been using everything i got. So it’s a definite win!

I got this box. My mom and sister also got this box. We all had a problem with the Coola setting spray. It leaked, dissolved the protective wrap and the labeling on the bottle was smeared .It smelled really gross. I wouldn’t use this on my face! I spoke to Sephora and they weren’t aware of this problem. I did mention to them how my mom and sister had the exact problem.

Reply ButtonReply

Carrie

That’s what that was?? I kept smelling the fabric bag and thinking maybe it was the ink. Good to know!

Reply ButtonReply

Kim

Mine was really gross too! I didn’t see any leaks but when I took the plastic wrap off to open it, it really smelled up my whole room!

Reply ButtonReply

Julie E

Mine too it smelled like skunk in my bathroom (where I threw away the plastic) for an entire day! The spray doesn’t smell to me but it leaves a nasty taste on your lips so make sure to wash your lips after using.

Jen

My comment didn’t show up 🙁 I’m half-Asian too and listed a bunch of lip products that work well for me and look “nude” when on but would not be considered nude to probably most white people. Beauty for Real Lip Cream in “Always There,” Lipstick Queen “Saint Nude” (more of a warm rose than a nude), Marc Jacobs lip crème in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” and Mac Viva Glam IV (I believe, not 100% sure)

I always enjoy your reviews. We usually get the same box. Sometimes I don’t think I’ll like a color until I see it on you and realize it will look great on me too. After seeing the lip gloss on you, I’ll keep mine too!

This time I got 067 instead and the only difference is the scent. I got the Versace instead of the Bulgari. I was looking at my profile to see what I did differently, but there doesn’t appear to be a place where we select our favorite fragrance scents.

I will go to the play party Tuesday and try all the scents. I suspect I’ll like the Versace better than the Bulgari based on your comment. And I’ll ask how they pick the scents for our Play boxes.

Jenny

The Lovesick shade totally washes me out (I’m asian) and I would guess really does not work on “every” complexion. Perhaps many though!

Mary Beth

Oh yeah seriously? I did not see that comment. It makes me mad that the people who like these type shades think they work for everybody and think bright shades work for nobody. I look so bad in these muted type shades. You, the reviewer, is it Haley? You look really good in them, and you even looked really good in the dark brown. But you are a spring or an autumn, who look good in MUTED colours. Winter and spring look better (as a rule) in clear colors. Clear winter (which is me) looks better in clear, dark, and cool (K-dub being an example). I can do other things that aren’t that – clear, warm, and light, even, if it’s only medium-light, and it’s a coral. Or clear, dark and warm – a dark reddish brown. But a muted, cool, and light? No no no no no. If you are a person that thinks they work for everybody (I’m not picking on Haley, I like Haley, I’m talking about anybody who thinks this), why? Is it because you don’t see them on us because we have sense enough not to wear them? Or is it because if we do wear them, although they are not beautifying, and they wash us out, at least they are not garish?

Reply ButtonReply

JuJu

Why would you be mad at that? There is no color in existence that would look on EVERYBODY.

And it’s not just being a certain “season”, it’s also about one’s preferences: for instance, I, as a winter, was really glad not to receive the magenta K-Dub lipstick. Maybe it would look good on me theoretically, but it’s just not a color I want to wear on my lips in real life, and that’s considering that I am pretty adventurous with my makeup in general.

Hillary

Yeah not a good color for me either. But I’m glad I got to try the formula.

Reply ButtonReply

MWG13

These kinds of shades normally work on me so I was excited to try it, but it turned into this awful lavender on my lips.

Reply ButtonReply

Sharon

Asian girl here too. If you’re really looking for a mauve lipstick, might I recommend Colourpop’s Lippie Stix in the Sauce shade? It’s the only one I’ve ever found that doesn’t look weird on me!

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I am half Filipino, and HATE getting nude shades in subscription boxes because they almost never work. Some mauves do work if they’re more of a berry color rather than light brown, because the latter is too close to my skin color and makes me look washed out. One nude that I LOVE is Lipstick Queen Saint Nude because it is dark enough to not wash me out, and not really nude at all but a warm rose. Some other lip products that have worked well with my complexion: Beauty for Real Lip Cream in “Always There,” Marc Jacobs lip crème in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” and one of the MAC Viva Glam lipsticks, can’t remember the name but I have several because I love it so much. It looks like a dark berry shimmer when swatched but looks more like a berry neutral on me.

Samantha

Jenny, I’m half Asian, and any mauve-related shade totally flushes me out too! I’m glad to hear I’m not alone, because it seems like mauve nudes work on a majority of people, but they always look horrible on me.

Reply ButtonReply

Jody

This is my box. I thought I would try the Verb spray on my short, thick, straight hair. It did nothing for me. I put it in while wet and then after blow drying. Wishful thinking. It doesn’t have a strong scent to me. I was hoping for that “beach” experience.

Reply ButtonReply

JuJu

I am glad I wasn’t subscribing this month. The only item I was interested in was the Kat Von D lipstick (in Lovesick) and I got it in a swap. Gotta say, this shade works really well on me, it just wasn’t enough of an incentive to pay for the whole box.

I mean, I am a fan of Bulgari perfumes actually, but I already own all the Omnias anyway.

Aside from that, this box is a major snoozefest for me. And receiving POREfessional is almost as bad as getting the Smashbox primer at this point. 🙂

Amber

I often use sea salt sprays before blow drying, and it really does give added volume and texture. I have fine hair, especially when I blow dry it, and it really helps!
