Book Bus sends the books individually wrapped each month. It’s a special touch and my children enjoyed unwrapping the books. They also loved the Book Bus box itself. It’s one of the prettiest subscription outer boxes I’ve ever seen. The bright colors and quirky illustrations were attention-grabbing and visually appealing.

Book Bus includes an information card in their boxes with a summary of each book as well as a lesson that’s learned from each book. The books sent this month were both about bugs.

Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo! by Rosetta Stone – Value $5.98 on Amazon (retail price $9.99)

This book’s silly rhymes and even illustrations were quite reminiscent of Dr. Seuss. The book helps teach cause and effect in that when the little bug sneezes it sets off a lot of crazy actions along the way. This book is from 1975, but I’ve never seen it before. It was funny and my kids enjoyed it.

Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni – Value $10.09 on Amazon (retails price $16.99)

I always enjoy seeing a classic book by a hugely talented author and illustrator such as Leo Lionni. Inch by Inch also happens to be a Caldecott Honor book meaning it won an award for the best illustrations the year it was published. The information card from Book Bus said that this book is great for teaching measurement and problem solving. I agree and it’s just a cute story to boot, about an inch worm that comes up with a solution to not being eaten by a bird.

Verdict: The value of Book Bus this month was over $16 (using Amazon prices) which is lower than the cost of the box ($19.99 a month + $5 shipping). Using retail prices, this box would have a stronger value. However both books are curated around a common theme (bugs), came individually wrapped, packaged in a gorgeous box and also had helpful literature included on what the books aim to teach. I typically don’t find children’s book boxes to have great monetary value, but I love that they promote reading in a fun way and are a convenience for parents that may not get to the public library as often as they’d like or are just looking to build their child’s home library. I think this would make a great gift subscription for a child as well.

What do you think of this month’s Book Bus?
