Barbella Box
4.5 overall rating

Barbella Box is a monthly fitness subscription box for women.  It is marketed for a CrossFit lifestyle but I think it works for any woman who likes to work out (especially if heavy lifting and/or kettlebells are involved).

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

BarBella Box Women's Fitness Subscription - May 2017

My box didn’t have an information card, but there was some product literature included.

Born Primitive Sports Bra with Removable Pads – Value $48

This is a custom design for Barbella Box, but you can buy them from the Barbella Box shop (linked to in product name). Being a B cup, at best, I am a stranger to the world of expensive sports bras because my support needs are just not the same as those of women with larger cup sizes. But this is nice! I wore it during a cardio workout last night and it was comfortable and supportive, plus it didn’t chafe. I personally don’t like pads in sports bras, but they are there if you want them.

Gym Gypsy Journal for Summer 2017 – Value $18

Gym Gypsy is actually a subscription where you get a new journal every season, so the price here is just for one, three-month journal. I like the idea of seasonal journals because there is no need to wait until the beginning of the year to get started! I have mostly been doing kettlebell work lately for strength but I need to get back to using my weight machine and this will be great for helping me keep track of progress.

Here’s a look at some of the daily pages inside the journal. I personally don’t weigh myself every single day, but I know some people do.

WOD & Done (2 packages, pink) – Value $3.20 (or buy a 5 pack for $7.99)

These are a fitness subscription box mainstay; they protect your skin from getting torn. Unlike your 45th black mascara, though, these are actually something you go through fairly quickly since they are designed to be single-use. Right now that is super attractive to me because my workout gloves need to be cleaned and I’m not sure how to do that (they’re leather). I’m saving these for my next workout with a 25-pound kettlebell since that is the weight where my hands start getting beat up. (These are definitely effective – I’ve tried them before – and sanitary, too.) For what it’s worth, this is a sale price quoted above; normally these are $15 for 5 packs.

Hand Armor Liquid Chalk (2 fl oz) – Value $6.95

This is another product I’ve received before, but it is also welcome. (You can use it in conjunction with the wraps above if you want).  When I use a <25-pound kettlebell, even though it doesn’t damage my hands, my hands do get sweaty, and this is a good alternative while I figure out how to clean my gloves. This dries quickly and keeps me from losing my grip on the kettlebell (of course it would work with weights, too).

Prince of Peace Ginger Candy (4.4 oz) – Value $1.99

It’s nice to finally get a large package of this. Other boxes send one or two pieces in sample packages. I like to have a piece or two after a large dinner (this is chewy and you should watch your dental work…). Ginger is also good at fighting inflammation!

Pulse Skincare Honey Dew Cleanser & Mask (2 oz) – Value $12.95

This is a new brand for me. As it happens, I’ve been struggling to remove makeup lately since I ran out of oil-based cleanser but didn’t want to buy more (my stash is too big to justify skincare purchases). This works nicely, though! (I used it as the first step in a double cleansing routine.) It was gentle and it removed my makeup, plus it contains tea tree oil and raw honey, both of which have antibacterial properties and can help fight breakouts.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $91 for the May Barbella Box. That is more than $40 above the month-to-month cost of the subscription. The hero item (the sports bra) is a type of item I rarely get from subscription boxes but something I really needed (most of mine are getting old). I thought the selection of items was great and I learned about a couple of new brands (Gym Gypsy and Pulse Skincare). Overall, I thought this was a really good box.

Great box!! Didn’t use everything but hey I am not always going to use it all. Just appreciate the good work you guys do in putting it together. Have some useful items in all the boxes. Stuff I never would have tried so definitely worth every penny.

My first box was this May box. It is exactly the type of sub I have been looking for. I’m larger chested and the bra was still very supportive. I may skip months on occasion due to the price and shipping to Canada but I am looking forward to the Christmas Abbott curated June box.

I do not do CrossFit but I do powerlift and I loved this box. The straps on this bra do not sit on my traps like most other sports bras, the wraps and chalk come in handy when the weather is hot, I love ginger and face masks. The journal is nice and allows you to enter a lot of details about your workout; however, it is too big for my taste.

I got this box as a one time purchase. I have been thinking about signing up but their past boxes have been hit or miss for me.

I should be reviewing this one more regularly now.

No two of my sports bras are the same so I don’t always notice the straps unless one specifically irritates me in some way. I am guessing this sports bra was designed this way specifically for the reasons you mention.
