Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Scentbird always sends a preview card for next month’s fragrance. For May, it is Citrine by Nest. I’m going with my own choice for May because I have a couple of samples of this one already. (There’s no information card specific to your chosen fragrance since those will differ for everyone.) There’s also a card detailing how to use the cases they send out.

With your first month, you’ll receive a case to protect your fragrance vial. Here it is in the open and closed positions. All you do to open is twist up! This protects your fragrance vial if you want to put it in a purse or something like that.

Pink Sugar Sensual by Aquolina (buy a 3.4 oz. bottle for $22.99)

This was my choice for April. (This is the April package. It accidentally got sent to my old address and returned, and Scentbird kindly sent out a replacement, so this is not super late or anything like that.) It is not the most expensive fragrance out there, at only $23 or so per full-size bottle, but some months are just going to be like that. There are higher-tier fragrances also available through Scentbird, and I find myself happier if I choose fragrances with notes I like, regardless of price.

Anyway, I picked this one because I really like the regular Pink Sugar fragrance and this one sounded like something I would enjoy.  This has a little sandalwood and vanilla, both of which I love, sugar (of course), some citrus (tangerine and bergamot), blackcurrant, and some floral notes (tiare, jasmine, African orange flower).  On me, this is really mostly sugary/sweet, but I like the way the vanilla and sandalwood modify the sweetness.  I am not noticing the floral scents much, which is honestly the way I like it.

Verdict: The retail value of my fragrance this month is only a couple of dollars, based on the full size price on a discount site (linked to above), but for me, this subscription is less about value and more about discovery. You can certainly manipulate the value to get more than you paid for (they have a few Cartier fragrances, for example, and Lilac Love, which costs $400 a bottle elsewhere). The fragrance I chose is a really good fit for me and I think Scentbird’s fragrance picker is great at helping me narrow down their selection to fragrances that fit my preferences.

This is an interesting looking box. As a fragrance lover, I’m surprised I haven’t tried it yet. I think I had the impression that they made their own fragrances. I didn’t realize that they were branded. I really like the idea of being able to experience and find new favorites.
