Nomadik Outdoors Subscription Box - April 2017

This month featured the second Nomadik Instagram challenge. Participants are eligible to win a Speaqua speaker! This challenge remains an awesome idea, but unfortunately, I didn’t receive my box until a week after the contest ended. Hopefully, some other subscribers got it in time!

PowerPractical Luminoodle – Value $19.99

The first item this month is the Luminoodle! If you were paying attention to camping stuff on Kickstarter a few years ago, you may have already heard of this. I actually received one as a gift this past Christmas, and I am really pleased to have a second! The Luminoodle is basically a waterproof strip of USB-powered LED lighting with several built-in hanging options. I use this with my hammock when camping - it runs the length of my rain fly and lights up my entire area easily. I’ve also laid this on a picnic table to light up a cooking prep area, and have wrapped it around trees to give off a little ambient lighting. I didn’t realize until looking at the website, but apparently, you can throw the Luminoodle into the carry bag to make a lantern, which is pretty cool!

I attached a standard USB battery in the photos so you can see how much light they throw off.

They also include a 25% off coupon for future noodles or the battery pack/light (which I already own - definitely worth the investment.)

Slipstream / Reelhouse 3-Month Subscription – Value $14.97

Up next this month is a 3-month subscription to Slipstream from Reelhouse. Slipstream is billed as “The Netflix for Adventure Films” and features lots of movies starring your favorite athletes and outdoors people. I perused the selection a bit (there is currently no search tool) and it seems pretty cool! I’ll probably watch a few of these in the next 3 months - though it is peak outdoors time!

NiteIze CamJam – Value $7 ($6.68 on Amazon)

The NiteIze CamJam is a cool little gadget for easy tightening of lighter loads. If you’re not confident in your knot ability, or just want to quickly get camp set up, these little guys will make things a breeze. I used these two to lash a Zrest to the outside of my pack and they held firm despite some pretty heavy bumping, and I know I’ll be able to reuse them should I want to hang a tarp or clothesline at camp. They don’t weigh much and with the time-saving benefit, they are a welcome addition to my pack!

Mountainsmith Tent Stakes – Value $9.95

Finally this month, we have a set of 8 stakes from Mountainsmith. Mountainsmith has a great reputation for outdoor gear, and these stakes are no exception. While I am partial to my MSR mini groundogs, I decided to give these a go and was not disappointed! They are large but not heavy, and the scoop shape really helps these stakes stay firm. I love the hooked tips - definitely held line with no slippage! I decided to keep these with my car camp kit because they are light and will always come in handy.

Verdict: Nomadik knocked it out of the park this month! I’m going to get a ton of use out of everything here. I love the Luminoodle and the CamJams are such a smart inclusion. They promise “up to $50 worth” of items in each box, and the value of everything this month adds up to $51.59. That exceeds the monthly $30 price tag by a lot, much more than last month. As usual, looking forward to next month’s box!

This box disappointed for sure. I sent it to my girlfriend for her birthday. Not only did they not include the ‘note’ that I spent the time filling out on the website (my friend actually had no idea who the box was from so in her process of elimination she asked me and that’s how she found out) but the items were a touch subpar. One item was good and the other two were mainly small fillers. The real bummer was when I tried to cancel and customer service was hell… they continued to argue with me and ship her another box. What a pain. The first box was expedited and then they sent another one even though I had canceled before there cancelation date. Then it was non stop emails arguing back or not responding to me. I wouldn’t sign up for this – it’s not worth the headache and you can find was better stuff just walking into an REI because you’re not getting a great value for a small price with this box.

Just a head’s up. I contacted the box through their Contact Us page on their site, which you would think is the way to go. But I received an email today:

“I am off-the-grid with very limited access to all electronic devices.”

and an email to contact someone else for assistance.

Really?? I’m sorry I know you are an outdoorsy box but you should still have a customer service rep in line to help customers paying for your box and subsequent outdoors outings. Grrr.

Has anyone else tried to get in touch with CS?

I love my Luminoodle! This is my second– first came from a Cairnbox and was my all time favorite inclusion. Handy during an 8 hour power outage this winter, used in my raft at night, great in its carry bag as a lantern for card playing while camping.
This was a wonderful box.

I Loved this box this month! And that Slipstream channel?? Holy moly it’s wonderful, I love the point of view of the outdoor adventurers, and the quality of the films is outstanding. So inspirational watching those snowboarders in Antartica and the mountain bikers attempting the mountain pass somewhere between Turkey and Russia…best streaming entertainment I’ve seen in ages. Makes me want to hop on my bike and take off on an adventure!

The stakes are something I did not even know you could buy, (I am a novice to camping but we are moving to Washington state next year so I’ve subbed to Nomadik to stock up on the necessities for my future outdoor existence lol) and my tent has the crappiest stakes, so these are going to be handy.

The light rope is awesome but I’m not sure how it works, haven’t tried it out yet, but will need to purchase a USB battery to make that happen for camping. Love the introduction to the new items in my stash!

Those camjam things will be handy I’m sure, once I start spending more time outdoors 😉 and find a need for them.

I just received my shipping info for the May box, and it’s all about kitchen tools and I’m super excited to see what arrives. Love this box, and thanks MSA for introducing it to me!

Glad you’re going to get use out of everything! Upgrading your tent stakes is a must for many tents – often the ones that come with tents are cheap and heavy. Having some well-designed, lighter ones like this will make a big difference for you. You will need some USB power for the Luminoodle – I definitely recommend the PowerPractical one as it’s light and also has a built in flashlight (Helps when you’re setting up in the dark!) but any USB outlet/battery will work. Hope you have a great time out there!
