Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map by James Dean – Value $4.74 on Amazon (retail price $4.99)

Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map came autographed by James Dean and also had a page of stickers stapled into the middle of the book. While we prefer hardcover books to paperback books we were very happy that this month contained three book selections. Pete the Cat isn’t personally one of my favorite book characters, yet he is so popular with kids. This Pete the Cat story features a pirate Pete and an Octopus. The dialogue felt a bit flat to me, but my children got a good giggle out of this one.

Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey – Value $8.42 on Amazon (retail price $14.99)

Laugh out loud funny! This book cracked us all up. The illustrations are funny and the ending was fantastic. Pig the Pug doesn’t like to share his toys with Trevor the wiener dog who lives in the same house. Pig learns his lesson painfully when he stacks his toys in a high pile to keep them away from Trevor and then suffers a terrible fall from atop the pile. This is a book that begs to read again and again and I will do so obligingly.

Be Quiet! By Ryan T. Higgins – Value $12.59 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)

My children and I love Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins and we were so thrilled to see his latest book which was just published last month in our box. Rupert the mouse wants to create a wordless picture book, but his friends hilariously won’t stop talking. This book is a ton of fun to read and has Higgins’ fantastic illustrations. This one was a huge hit at our house.

Verdict: We were very happy to see three books this month in our Lil’ Bear Book Club box. For quite some time we’ve been receiving just two and it was nice to get a third for a change, even better that one was autographed. The value this month was over $25 (using Amazon prices) which is above the cost of the box ($17.99 a month plus $5 shipping). We liked all the selections this month, especially Be Quiet! and Pig the Pug.

What do you think of this month’s Lil’ Bear Book Club?

Jessica’s addiction started off slowly enough with Birchbox, but it has grown and grown over the last three years. An elementary school librarian and mom of two she loves boxes that are child-centric. But she’ll never turn down a good fashion, beauty or tasty treat subscription.
