GlossyBox Subscription Box Review + Coupon – May 2017

This post may contain referral/affiliate links. Read the full disclosure.

GlossyBox is a monthly beauty subscription box. They have the best packaging in the business, their products are usually deluxe size or full size, and the value is usually good too.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

FYI: GlossyBox sends out multiple variations of the box during some months. So, there may be some variation between what I review and what you receive.

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing the items included:

And a reminder that the Limited Edition CEW Glossybox is coming soon:

Now, onto the items:

Leighton Denny Nail Polish in Pillow Talk – FULL SIZE! Value $16

This nail polish is a gorgeous cranberry creme with high shine. Full coverage in two coats. Here it is on:

(I just realized I received the exact same nail polish in my April 2016 GlossyBox, so some subscribers may be getting a repeat.)

Vitry Nail Repair Care – 4 ml Value $8

This formula is designed to help strengthen nails. It also is great for a no nail polish look. It gives a subtle shine. (And I love that it dried almost immediately.)

Skinn Cosmetics “Bronze Goddess” Eye Shadow & Blush Palette – Value $25

(I could only find this palette available in the US for sale on Amazon and Ebay, so I’m using the Amazon price. GlossyBox lists the retail value as $28)

UPDATE: Available online at Skinn Cosmetics here. (Sorry about that!)

This palette includes a blush shade, a shimmer highlighter, 3 shimmer metallic eyeshadows, and one matte brown eyeshadow.

The pigment payoff is pretty good. The shimmery eyeshadows are gorgeous. (Swatched in lower photo.)

Rodial XXL Lip Liner in Nude – FULL SIZE! Value $22

I really love the color of this lip liner. It works well as a barely-there color for my skin tone. The formula is creamy, and the pigment is pretty good. (I made the mistake of pressing down too hard to get more color payoff and broke the tip, so apply with a bit of caution!)

Here it is swatched above the palette:

The Spa To You Deep Pore Cleansing Brush & Massager – Value $9

This cleansing brush has a combination of soft bristles and five silicone bristles. (The silicone parts are designed to help with gently massaging your skin.)

(This also comes with a protective cover.)

This isn’t a Clarisonic, but it definitely helped get my skin cleaner than just using my cleanser + my hands. And it’s great for travel, too.

Here is everything in the May 2017 GlossyBox

Total box value: $80

Verdict

I think the value for this box is good compared to the $21 cost, and I’ll use everything included. I also appreciate that there were multiple full-size items in the box. The downside to GlossyBox is that sometimes you’ll receive products that aren’t available to buy online, so the “discovery” aspect of this box is a little limited compared to other beauty boxes.

What do you think of the May 2017 GlossyBox?

  1. Im kinda hoping they do the Buy 1 get 2 free boxes again this june like they did last year. I got So much awesome stuff

  2. Now that they’re offering this box at 50% off, I’m wondering if I should get it (it’s better than Allure & BB’s May boxes) or wait till June if it’s still available….

    • I was thinking the same thing…if the 50% off is not available maybe they will have something else..

  3. I’ve got the Retro Brow product from them in Med/Dark, it looks like a great product but I’m a fair blond. I need it in the lighter color if anyone wants to swap

  4. I think I’ve had them for 2 years now and I absolutely hate this box. Probably the second one I’ve hated so far. Too much make up, I’ve already received the Leighton Denny nail polish in the exact same color. The other nail polish is tiny but judging by the comments I’m not even going to try it

    • I found the size of the polish to be the size of regular nail polishes.

  5. Anyone notice that this month’s surveys aren’t up yet? I loved the Mother’s Day box but was missing an item and though I contacted them immediately, I haven’t heard anything back yet. It’s been over 2 weeks now. On the other hand, I really didn’t like this month’s box (or last month’s either), I only kept one item from this box and haven’t even tried it yet. I have 2 months left on my sub and I plan to cancel after that, but I’m wondering with the steep decline in quality and the poor customer service whether they’ll make it 2 more months. This feels like a death spiral to me.

    • I subbed for a 6 month and still have 3 months left. i was happy with the previous 2 months and ok with this month. But yes I ould like to know why the surveys are not up yet. I will be canceling once my sub is over and may consider if another deal comes along because I think 21 is pricey.

  6. I am so angry about this box! I used the nail strengthener and my nail snapped in half this morning, the face cleanser smelled super bizarre and kept me up last night, and the moment I touched the nude pencil to my lip, the tip snapped off! What a load of garbage. I’m so glad that I cancelled weeks ago. Ipsy has been knocking it out of the park, and I’ve been happy with Sephora Play’s quality as well.

    • yep, I have been using the nail strengther since I received it and 3 of my nails broke. right in half.

  7. I would love to get this exact box, but now as many of you have pointed out – I wonder how & why they really determine who gets what?

I’m a little scared & put off by their variation process.

  8. Hi received my box today and I’m happy with it.

I got the mud mask which I need since my face keeps breaking out from my hair products.

I also received a 30% off coupon at Michael Todd. Anyone else get This? Curious because I just ordered a soniclear a couple weeks ago.

  9. So glad I didn’t get the palette. I am sure it’s nice but it looks like a million other palletes out there.

  10. Gosh I pd 150 for the annual box several yrs now and no leaks got the nuxe and the prrfume so really can’t complain
I was hoping for the hair mask but happy with the mud mask. I’m listing items i won’t use on the swap list which I did with the nuxe and got the most beautiful necklace so I truly do not see a problem
So thankful Liz started the swap group
If anyone wants I’ve listed PSMH entire box for MY

  11. This is my 4th GB and I got this exact box. I’ve already cancelled so this will be my last box for a while until I can work through some of my stash. I’m pleasantly surprised by the pallette, it has great neutrals that work well with my cool tones. Great to have a full size nude liner and bright nail polish. I’m happy and will miss GB.

  12. I got the Kevin Murphy hair mask and cleanser version but I LOVE it. I used the hair mask yesterday and my hair has never been softer. I was a little surprised by the results because I’m very picky about the hair products I use on my wavy, frizzy, sometimes unruly hair. I don’t know how GB decides who gets what box but they sure got mine right this month! I will definitely be purchasing more of the hair mask. I know the $ amt is less than the makeup pallet but I wouldn’t have used it. I’ve had GB off and on for over a year and have always been very happy!!!

    • That’s what I got too.. Looking forward to trying the cleanser and it also says you can use it as an overnight mask.

      • Yea yes I got it

  13. So many of these”reviews” are promos for the boxes. When you don’t pay for the box there is a higher probability that it will color your review in a more positive light – so that you may still continue to receive free boxes.

  14. uh ohhh mine weighs 1.2lbs

  15. I’m happy with my box! Been a GB subscriber for maybe 2 yrs now. For the price, whether you caught a sale or pay the $21, box contents are always worth significantly more. Sometimes I wonder if people who subscribe to numerous boxes maybe have kinda high expectations? I’ll use everything, I’ll try everything, and if a shade isn’t for me – one of my gf’s or mom will get a for-no-reason surprise gift that cost me next to nothing. That’s a win-win in my book 🙂

    • Agreed, if you get this box at a deep discount, it’s not as awful. I would put it on a par with the $15 Allure box, but Allure has, on occasion, knocked my socks off (a free box for subscribers with SKII??? Wow wow wow). I have never once had my socks knocked off by Glossybox (but I almost always receive the worst versions offered each month – perhaps if I were receiving the nicer products in my boxes I wouldn’t be so cynical). I think dump their worst variations Onto their longer term subscribers – I think they think we’ve gotten complacent so they can repeatedly give us the junky variations and we still won’t cancel. But I think people are finally saying enough isenough.

At $21 a box, this box cannot complete with BeatyFix or BoxyCharm. They’re on totally different echelons.

  16. I hardly post in these comments, but I’m so pissed, their customer service sucks. they never emailed me back. im missing the mud mask. every single month, i have either something shattered, cracked, missing, or used. Other stuff are ok. Im about to file CC fraud

  17. I got the same box as Liz.

  18. I’m a new subscriber, and I didn’t get the SKINN palette either. Very disappointed. IMO, that’s the one item everyone should’ve received. Well, that and the lip pencil (which everyone did get). It’s not rocket science to figure that out, GlossyBox. I’m cancelling.

  19. Would have loved the SKINN Palette, but didn’t get it….

    • Me too

    • Same. I do like the cleansing balm though… I still would of liked the palette.

  20. I used to really like Glossybox but I finally had to cancel. What gets me is the value of the boxed range so much. It isn’t fair when everyone is paying the same price. Good riddance!

    • Yes, I agree. My box value was only $67. That’s OK for the value, but not when other people pay the same amount and get a box worth $80. Variations are fine but I do not understand why they can’t try to keep the value amount the same (or with a few dollars) for everyone. It’s disappointing because I keep getting the lowest possible value box every month.

      • I totally hear your gripe. Actually a $13 value difference isn’t that bad for Glossybox. They’ve been known to have variations with over $50 value differentials. They have replaced the big $30-$50 items with $2 shower gels or that nail polish by one of the Kardashians, also worth about 2 bucks. I think I have 3 or 4 bottles of that stuff and it’s all from Glossybox. If this subscription actually mirrored the boxes that Liz receives it wouldn’t be bad, but the low end variations are usually filled with unbelievably cheap junk. Either totally unknown brands or drug store stuff, and really CHEAP drug store stuff at that.

The best part about this box is the box itself!

        • That’s funny but sometimes true. I love their pink boxes and put them to good use storing all the products I have from numerous subs.

          • I strongly disagree s is wonderful I have been a yrly subscriber going on three years they start it I give lousy honest reviews i’ve never had a messed up box and on my product that on the list is in my box whether i’m luckyor not I don’t know but I do know it has nothing to do with the reviews

  21. Anyone have a box weight of 1.3 lbs.? If so, which variation did you get? Im impatient with wondering. Thanks!

    • I got my box finally. It was the version with the cleansing balm and the hair mask.

    • My Box weighed 1.5 and I had what Liz had.. minus the red polish, instead I got the face mud mask. Awesome box.

  22. I got all but the red polish. In its place was a mud mask. I’m kinda glad I didn’t because I’ll be getting my Julep box pretty soon with Summer colors and all. What Products I won’t use ‘llI give to my Sisters or Nieces so that can get use out of them.

  23. I must be easily pleased, because I am satisfied with my box, even the brush, if you are not attacking your face, it works well, I find it more gentle than the battery operated ones, and does a thorough job. I love hair treatments and trying new cleansers also. This was definitely more suited to me than the one with the eye palette.

  24. That Spa to You facial cleansing brush hurt my skin. It was very rough on my face, and after one use and a sore and red face I decided I decided it wasn’t for me. I took it into the shower with me and lo and behold, I found a new and better use for it ~ it scrubbed the soap scum out of the grouted areas of the mosaic trim in my shower walls beautifully, so receiving on otherwise unusable beauty accessory turned out not to be a total waste ~ LOL!

    • Great idea. I think I may keep mine in the shower for that use. The dermatologist I work for said some brushes can actually drive dirt and oil in the skin so I was unsure about using it.

      • I have a Clarisonic and sometimes I wonder if that is what I’m doing with it. 🙁

Since I do have the Clarisonic I love the idea of using it as a cleaning brush for the shower!

    • Haha to funny 😂😂

    • OMG! Awesome idea! I tried the brush without soap or anything, just wanted to see how “soft” it was and oh man! Hours later I still felt where I brushed my face with it! The funniest thing in my opinion was getting this brush along with a discount code for a BETTER brush SMH. I signed up for a 3 month deal at $15 a box…very very happy this is my last bag. For me, the value was just not there…even for $15 LOL. I get ipsy and my ipsy bags blew this out the water. Actually I cancelled Sephora Play and got a second Ipsy for this month. Both my bags valued at $135, one at $80 and the new one at $50. Yea bu bye Glossy! LOL The pet peeve I had with Sephora Play is that they NEVER send out fullsize anything, lol. Not even their own products!

  25. Mine weighs 1.4lbs. Anyone already get their box with that weight?

I have no patience, what’s in it!!

    • That was my weight (1.4lbs) and I got this exact same box that Liz received.

      • Thank you!

  26. There is some misinformation in this post. The company that makes the palette is located in Southern California. You can buy the palette from their website. It’s not only available in the U.S. on Amazon and eBay.

    • Yes. I saw that when I looked it up online.

    • Thanks for bringing that to my attention! (And sorry I didn’t find that in my earlier searches.)

      I’ve updated the post accordingly.

  27. I did not get the polish but the mud mask instead. I’m happy with this box; got it on sale for $13.88 per box and it’s been way better for me than the other cheap boxes.

  28. This is my box.

-Rodial XXL lip liner in nude
    -Spa to you cleansing brush
-Kevin Murphy Angel masque (3.4 oz)
-Emma Hardie cleansing balm (0.5 oz)
-Vitry Nail Repair Care (0.13 oz)

Is anyone interested in any of the products or the whole box? I don’t want this.

    • Amy, I haven’t received my box yet to know what I am getting. I’d be interested in the cleansing balm and lip liner if I don’t get them.

    • I receive the exact same items. I was so hoping for that pallette. The only thing I’m going to use is the cleansing brush. Bummer!

  29. This box is so frustrating.

People think OuiPlease is bad for their wide variations but this box is SO much worse. Glossybox actually sends emails to subscribers promoting the supposed contents on their boxes then they send those subscribers p totally different contents (and inevitably way worse). At least OuiPlease is very upfront about what will definitely be in all boxes and what will be variations. I actually like the OuiPlease model. I like an element of surprise. But when Glossybox repeatedly substitutes $2 garbage in lieu of their big items that surprise gets old fast.

I’m surprised this box is still around when the competition is so fierce and there’s just no comparison between BeautyFix and Glossybox. Glossybox has gone so far down hill.

    • So did you get the $2 hotel shower gel in lieu of the $50 Nuxe oil last summer when a Nuxe oil was to be in every box? Did you get the $25 Harajuku cologne that was to be In every box or the $1.13 mini facial cleanser samples that barely had enough in it to was your face in December instead? The fond memories Glossybox equality.

      • Yes!!! I fondly recall receiving that $2 shower gel instead of the much hyped $50 Nuxe oil. It was something we could have gotten as a hotel freebie. It was so special. And to add salt to the wound, the shower gel leaked all over everything else and the black packing paper is not colorfast so I had gray colored shower gel all over everything. Ahhh, good times.

      • Don’t think they ever said we’d get the oil or the perfume for sure!! Those weren’t really available to us!! They’re meant for beauty bloggers etc! Don’t misread or skip over that fact!

        • I actually got an email stating all subs would get those items, then surprise! We changed our mind, but we do have 500 of the Harajuku cologne set aside for new subscribers, just not enough for a paid $21 sub. Then a few months later they offered the Harajuku as a new customer perk again. Hey GB take care of your current subscribers paying $21 a month. I had broken and/or defective items my last four boxes and my replacement options were old products, some from 2014. The December box was my free box. My lipstick was broken, my highlighter dried out and I got two mini cleansers with a combined value of $1.13 and had to use both tubes to was my face because one was not enough. I had used my points, then cancelled my sub so I wouldn’t get January box. I emailed about defective product with photos and never got an answer. Then Hilary from GB told me to email GB using a link she gave me on the MSA board after expressing my dissatisfaction publicly, so I did as she said and the response I got is we have replaced your previous items and you don’t have an active account so no replacement. Worked out well,,,for them.

          • My Ipsy for December was twice the value of the GB or more at half the cost.

    • I am so done with Glossy box.
Very disappointing to see the spoilers and think your getting what was on display but instead get sampleas worth $1-2.00. Ridiculous. I’m surprised Liz reviews them with their clearly scamming people. It really bothers me, I’m sorry. It’s a scam!

    • I swear that they send those that review the box, the best box…so that they’ll get a good review. I’ve had nothing but problems with this company. Everything in my April box was ruined, & I proved it with photos. Yet, they’re still arguing with me about what deserves to be replaced. Customers are treated horribly. It takes forever to get a reply from them when there’s an issue. They still billed me even though I cancelled in April.

      • I personally never had an issue with them and if a problem did come up I called the number on their webpage and someone has always picked up promptly and assisted me professionally. Plus I always seem to receive good boxes and I probably purchase 1-4 a month depending on special offers.

  30. Has anyone figured out how to get the product out from the lip liner? (Is it a pencil?) Turning the bottom doesn’t do anything.

    • You sharpen it. It just looks like plastic or it is a plastic coated wood…or maybe plastic wood blend. Whatever it is you can just sharpen it.

      • Thank you…it looked like it was a turny one…I threw one of my two away…yikes..!

    • You sharpen it. It looks like plastic but it sharpens.

      • Thank you!!

      • Oops, sorry for the double post. I thought the first one got lost in cyber space.

  31. I got this same version except I didn’t get the red nail polish, but received the mud mask. Omgosh, I love that mud mask!!!!! I love ❤️ my box! Very happy. I’ve seen a different box on YouTube. And I’m very glade I didn’t get that one. Definitely that different version was not for me.

  32. This was my exact box.

I love the cost break down Liz. What an excellent and helpful idea! It puts things in perspective too.

    • I sort of like the cost breakdown too. Even though I didn’t get this box, it’s still nice to see that I could have paid only $6 for a $25 item. Even if the item’s not for me, it would still make a nice gift to someone that I know would love it…. and I only “spent” $6!

  33. Pretty disappointed. Did not receive nail polish nor pallet. This is my third box and feels like I keep receiving low end version. Did not receive Mary Kay kit in my other box either.

    • That’s how I feel too. Why are others getting the better version and I keep getting the cheaper version? I didn’t receive the palette or the polish this time and didn’t get Mary Kay last time.

  34. My box looks nothing like that. I got Kevin Murphy hair mask, lip liner, a cleansing balm, nail treatment and the brush. Oh well, I have an annual subscription so I can’t go anywhere.

    • That’s the box I got too. The bristles on the face brush are too hard and it hurts to use it. I wish I got that palette instead of the hair mask. Thinking about unsubscribing.

      • Yes! You could use that brush on your feet maybe, but when I circled it on my cheek it was rough! It certainly will exfoliate your skin. Rip it right off.

    • I agree, I got this box also. My second month and I’m not impressed.

    • Looks like we’re box twins! This is by far the worst box I’ve received. 2 samples, the hair mask (not at all an equivalent to the palette), and an unusable facial brush. Total value for our box was $68. No opinion on the lip liner because I’m so mad about the rest of the box. After a six month string of broken and/or missing products, decision to cancel is easy.

For what it’s worth: I’ve always had a fantastic experience with customer service. They’ve always replaced Products without a hassle and been responsive. But I have to keep a spreadsheet just to track all the for mishaps/replacements with their box, and now the Products aren’t even worth the energy 🙁

    • That is what I received!! I have the annual subscription… Suspect??

      • I received that same unfortunate box and I had a three-month sub. I unsubscribed. I don’t want any of it.

      • Hmmm….i have the annual sub as well. Wonder if that’s why I’ve been getting the crappier boxes.

        • I don’t think subscription length has anything to do with it. I got the cheaper box with the cleanser and the masque in it and I’m a monthly subscriber.

  35. I really wanted that palette, but didn’t get it.

    • Same here.

      • Me three! 🙁 I’m pretty bummed.

  36. I did not receive the eye shadow palet or the polish. I received a cleanser packet and a conditioner. I cancelled. That’s not nice of them to do that. They sent Liz a better box and sent me a dub. I won’t subscribe to them again.

    • Be lucky you got out when you did their customer service is a nightmare

  37. I Like the subscriber cost breakdown. That will make it nice for swapping if you want to know the true price paid per item for equitable swaps.

    • Glad it is helpful! 🙂

  38. what about the tree hut exfoliating mud mask? lists it but is not included in the box?! I wrote them about it…no reply yet

    • It says, “Receive a selection of 5.” I don’t think they ever intended for anyone to receive all 6 items.

    • It says: “Receive a selection of five”.

  39. Hey
I am not happy with this box i got a repeat nail polish and the face brush is not very soft. I am not sure that i will use it on my face.
Apart from that i will use the pallet and lip liner. Still a little disappointed in this box

    • Use the brush as a body brush for rough areas of you’re going to keep it that way your $ isn’t wasted.

      • Great idea. You could also use as a foot scrubber in shower too.

    • At least you got the palette.

  40. I received a different variation with a Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me Masque instead. I’m not sure why they ask you to fill out a profile. I don’t use hair masques, but I do use highlighters and bronzers. Anyone want to swap and trade?
