Bokksu is a premium Japanese snack subscription service. Each box includes an assortment of authentic Japanese snacks as well as a tea pairing chosen to complement and enhance that month's flavors.
The snacks are selected around a cultural theme, and each box contains a Tasting Guide that describes the items and how to best enjoy them.
Bokksu recently upgraded their packaging to this sturdy gift box. It's beautiful and totally reusable!

In celebration of Bokksu's first birthday, May's box is all about Fan Favorites from the past year. I have tried almost all of these snacks before from past boxes, and I'm beyond excited to see them again.
They've also increased the variety of snacks each month, upgraded the custom-designed box, and improved the information card!
20th Century Pear Langue De Chat
The first time I tried these in the October 2016
Bokksu it was love at first bite. These sandwich cookies are made using
20th Century or Nijisseiki pears. The middle is a blend of white chocolate and pear. The cookies are delicately sweet and buttery, while the chocolate envelops my taste buds with just the perfect hint of fresh, fragrant pear.
Black Sesame Senbei
This type of thick, crunchy senbei is covered in soy sauce glaze and black sesame seeds. It's crunchy, savory, and surprisingly filling, largely due to its size. The black sesame seeds lend a mild toasty flavor to the overall taste.
Bake Chocolate
These are delicate, airy, fluffy chocolate truffles that melt in your mouth upon contact. The texture and intensity of the chocolate reminds me of cocoa powder. I don't know how so much sweetness can fit inside so small a piece of chocolate!
Cheese Manju Okashinai
Manju is a traditional Japanese confection made with flour, rice powder, and buckwheat. This manju contains white bean and cheese instead of a common filling like red bean. The outer shell is light and crumbly, while the dense, yet soft interior holds the perfect amount of sweetness. The cheesy undertones make this snack extra unique and delicious!
Maru Cha Cha
This is a thin matcha biscuit made from koicha, a concentrated tea made from higher quality matcha that results in a richer flavor. In the biscuit, this translates to a dense, sophisticated bitterness that contrasts with the sweet undertones but still tastes good together. It's not very good by itself but is fantastic with tea. Fun fact: I saw an artisan shop selling these green treats during my trip to Kyoto, Japan. Don't laugh, but it was almost like seeing a celebrity in the flesh!
Jaga Pokkuru
These french fry chips are made from 100% Hokkaido-grown potatoes, which are cut and processed to give the snack its crispy texture. They look exactly like regular french fries, and the taste is fascinatingly close to the real thing. The fries are also lightly dusted in roasted salt to boost the flavor. These would be a great alternative to french fries if the junk food cravings ever kick in. I can't get enough!
Oh! Yaki Toukibi
This is the kind of snack I see myself eating with friends at a large, boisterous social gathering. It is a mix of savory mochi puffs and crispy corn kernels. A soy sauce infusion gives everything a savory undertone. However, the the corn kernels are sweet and buttery, which balances out the saltier flavors. I like this one a lot.
Apple Green Tea
This is a fragrant blend of green tea, apples, and rose petals. It was first introduced to me in the October 2016 Bokksu, when the weather was cooler and a blend of warm, tart apple green tea was like cozying up to a fleece blanket. Now that it's hot and humid where I live, this tea serves a different purpose. When steeped in a large pitcher and left in the fridge overnight, it is the perfect afternoon refreshment.
The crisp, tart taste of apple comes barreling in upon first sip. Next comes the green tea. Finally, the rose petals are present only in whispers. Fancy prose aside, this is delicious tea!
Verdict: This is my favorite Bokksu of all time! I loved reliving many of the amazing flavors from past boxes, so much so that there's no way I can choose a favorite this time. I'm also glad that they have increased the variety of snacks in each box while continuing to include multiples of each snack. The curation is wonderful with an equal selection of sweet and savory goodies (plus the tea pairing is always something I look forward to). Not to mention, the gorgeous presentation makes my tasting experience all the more indulgent. There are 19 snacks total for a cost breakdown of about $2.05 per snack.
